    1. [SLOAN-SLONE-L] SLOAN: Irish AND Scottish
    2. O Sluaghain is the Irish clan.... there is also a Scottish family, one cannot say with certainty to which you are from until you trace yourself back. Like HAYES there are actually different families from both locales that are very old and both go by the same name: Sloan. :) Slan, (Gaelic for "take care") Christiana

    1. [SLOAN-SLONE-L] Govan (Glasgow) at last!
    2. Mike Sloan
    3. Delighted to see Annie's contribution on the 27th. Have not had time to get my list out but can draw general attention to some notes that I have on my very small web site:- http://www.guernsey.net/~gu3whn/ Govan features quite strongly. Family memory extends to relatives on the north coast of Ireland but no evidence available. Interestingly, our name has been recorded as Slowan in the 18th Century and as yet I have not been able to get further than this one ancestor. This evidence locates Dundonald, Ayrshire as our earliest location to date. Kind regards to all. Mike Sloan Guernsey, Channel Islands.

The land is located in the County of Tennessee, in the territory of the United States south of the Ohio. Containing 500 acres. On Yellow creek above the Chickasaw trace... adjacent to Morgan Drewry and Edward Dickson. This land was part of Military Grant No. 1377. Sale registered in Duplin Co BkN p249 in 1806. Witnesses Gibson Sloan and William Rigbay Sr. There are more details available for the sequence of events in this transaction, see LDS FHC film #0497422. In Bk C p271 Dickson Sloan of Duplin Co, NC is acting as agent for Alexander McGovern & wife to sell 208.5 acres on Yellow Creek to Alexander Dickson of Dickson Co, TN. Sale dated 22 April, 1818. Registered in DicksonCo, TN, Oct-Nov 1819. This shows Duplin County folks went over the mountain for land deals... Gordon Sloan, in Willcox, AZ

    1. [SLOAN-SLONE-L] Anti-Virus programs.. what works best?
    2. Richard Sloan
    3. Since everyone is talking virus protection I just wanted to remind everyone that once you install virus protection such as Norton, McAfee, Dr. Solomon, etc... You should update your virus drivers every couple of months to stay current. If you have bought full versions of the anti-vrus software you can usually download the latest drivers for new found viruses from the companies web sites. _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. 1. Re: [SLOAN-SLONE-L] Anti-Virus programs.. what works best?
    2. To be effective, Norton Antivirus must be frequently updated via online connections. I know; I made the same mistake, i.e. failing to update. If you already have a virus, you should check with Symantec about disenabling it before you run Norton; otherwise, Norton will offer no protection. If you have done all this, why not check with Norton to see if they have some sort of guarantee...seems like I remember something like that - from way back. Again, GOOD LUCK...I've been there, and it's NO Fun. Helen D.

    2. The Happy 99 virus (actually a "worm:) has been sweeping through genealogy mail lists. I have received it twice from postings on genealogy lists and avoided infection by not opening. The sender does not know the Happy99 is there...it just "hops on". If you don't open the attachment, it will not infect your computer. For more information of this and the even more deadly CIH or Chernobyl virus, see the Symantec site at: http://www.symantec.com. Symantec makes Norton Antivirus and is a reliable source of info on viruses. They also offer free patches to Norton users for both Happy 99 and CIH. Helen Gant Donald

    3. Beth, Ellie and all, I must be lucky, I've never received an infected genealogy file and I do a lot of swapping. We used to have problems at the office, but that was because Typhoid Mary was our secretary. Since ya'll now have me worried, I loaded the Norton Antiviris which came free with my new computer. I use it at the office and it was very good at warning you when an infected file came in and it could repair most "word processing" type virus damaged files. The best prevention is to include everything is the body of message. I discovered another nice search engine, Rootsweb's Surname helper: http://surhelp.rootsweb.com/srchall.html Here you can find several "posted" biographies. The Bios seem like a good idea, I noticed Bill Newcommer posted his Sloan family on one of the Bulletin Boards. A good chance to tell your story to the world. Maybe I need to sponser a Sloan Board for Bios or transcribed material. What do you think?? At least it is virus free!! 2. Beth Sloan
    3. hi, I have had the same sort of problem. A Sloan "relative" sent me a file and when I opened it, I got infected. About an hour later the phone rang and it was the relative telling me not to open it, but too late. My backups are not working so I have lots and lots of retyping to do. I'm no longer opening attachments or downloading files. People like me are dangerous to others. I don't know enough about what I am doing and could send something on to you in all innocence . So, like Ellie, I'm asking that you are putting something in email, that you don't put it in as an attachment. Thanks, Beth Sloan -----Original Message----- From: EllieSS@aol.com <EllieSS@aol.com> To: SLOAN-SLONE-L@rootsweb.com <SLOAN-SLONE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, April 30, 1999 07:03 Subject: Re: [SLOAN-SLONE-L] Re: George thomas Sloan of Laurens Co. 1. [SLOAN-SLONE-L] Hugh Smith
    2. Dollmann, Ronald
    3. Dear Smith & Saskatchewan list service members, I am searching for information on Hugh Smith, b. 20 September 1904 in Govan, Scotland to parents Hugh Smith and Jane Murray Sloan. Hugh Smith immigrated to Canada around 1925, and was last known to be in Imperial, Saskatchewan in the late 1920s. The kind officials in Imperial were unable to shed any light on Hugh's fate. His two sisters, one in Canada and the other in the States, never heard from him after Imperial. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to trace this ancestor? Still digging, Ron Dollmann Orchard Park, New York dollmann@buffalo.edu <mailto:dollmann@buffalo.edu>
