The names below may be of interest to someone. I was sent this by someone on the Ayrshire mailing list. I asked someone to look up the Ardrossan Poor Relief applications to see if some of my Sloans were there. This is a list of people who applied for money. Many came from Ireland fleeing the potato famine. He did not send the date of the names but if they are of interest I can give you the email of the sender. The Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute was formed by Charles Kettering and Alfred P. Sloan, Jr. For an excellent description of his life, go to: http://franklin.scale.uiuc.edu/sloan/index.html. It does not mention his relationship to the Cancer Institute, however, The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation was one of the driving forces behind it. David R. Vargas LuckyBruin@aol.com

I had an interesting experience at the Sloan School of Business a few years ago. I was visiting Boston from Idaho where I live and was touring around to MIT and Harvard on the weekend. I walked into the Sloan School and asked for some information, when they found out my name was Sloan, they jumped into action and did I ever get service! So, if you want to be treated with respect, just walk into the Sloan School and say your a Sloan!!! A database of some of the current Sloan Radio Amateurs, known as Hams in some parts of the world is listed at:- http://www.qrz.com As of today, 134 are listed. Regards to all. Mike
Sloans.....I am always comforted when I go into the men's room in the US and find a reserved place with my name on it, already arranged. I have always wanted to think the Sloan Valve Co. for that thoughtfulness! I was recently in Tokyo and did not find a reserved place and had to take the place of someone named Toyo! I wish!!!!!!! Ellie
Hi Folks, We've had a lot of new subscribers lately and very little message traffic. I thought I better write something or else they'll think it's a dead list. I've only got a couple of news items, first, I organized a Sloan-Slone Webring, check out: http://www.panama.phoenix.net/~fmitchel/welcome.html#WebRing So, If you have a Sloan/Slone related website and want to join the ring, DO IT!! Also, Rootsweb has consolidated some of their surname features, take a look at: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/s/l/SLOAN/ At one time I talked about Sloan links to the Rich and Famous and how I had NEVER found any. Well, I finally found some in my own line! The descendants of Ellis Sloan (1819-1896) & Permelia Green Freeman of Ga./Ar. can now claim "cousinship" to Presidents Jimmy Carter, William Henry Harrison and James K. Polk. Of cource all this comes from the Freeman/Pope/Carter/Winslow branches. There is another R&F link, Thomas Henry Sloan (1844-aft 1880) and Missoui Jane Woolsey of Edmondson Co. KY. This Woolsey line can be traced back to Royality of Europe which can link you to everything from Odin to QEII, and a bunch of presidents. Has anyone else found any Sloan links to the Rich & Famous???
