    3. I came across this article while researching Emma Jane Hawkins, spouse of my G-Grandfather Charles Theodore Sloan. The Emma in the article doesn't fit in my line but I thought I'd send it along in case anyone was interested. -- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following appeared in the April 21st 1925 issue of the New York Times. Page 42, Column 7 Woman Slayer Declared Insane ASHLAND, Ky. April 20.-- Mrs. Emma Sloan, who killed her son, John, and daughter, Margaret, yesterday was temporally insane at the time, Coroner Richardson declared today. After talking to the woman in a hospital where she is recovering from self-inflicted hatchet wounds, the Corner decided upon the verdict without calling a jury. Mrs. Sloan repeated her story of killing her son as he slept, because, she said, he was a ‘mental defective’. A few minutes later she used the same hatchet on her daughter because, the Coroner was told, Mrs. Sloan did not wish her daughter grow up facing a disgrace in the family. -- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 'Tearlach' E=mail: mailto:chaslo@getnet.com My home page: http://www.getnet.com/~chaslo ********************************************************** ...........Second Star to the right, straight on till morning............ ......."Roger, go for throttle up"........ **********************************************************

    1. Re: SLOANs listed in "Cherokee Roots"... Vol. 2
    2. I just called the National ARchives in Ft. Worth.. They have indexes of those "accepted," "rejected." and "denied." when they made claim. Once you have found the name in any of these 3 indexes (lady at the NA wasn't sure why there is a "rejected" as well as a "denied" index.. She will find out and let me know)... it will give you a microfilm # to go find your person.. It will give their info in full as reported.. If anyone lives close to Ft. Worth.. you are in luck! I'm sure these rolls would be available in other places, would need to check. Call the phone # of NA in Ft. Worth if you like.. I failed to ask about other depositories! Call the National Archives in Ft. Worth (they have the holding of Cherokee microfilms). National Archives-Southwest Region; 501 West Felix St., P. O. Box 6216; Ft. 1. Misc Sloan/Slone info
    2. F Mitchell
    3. Hi Folks, TGIF!! I've got a couple of pieces of info I'd like to share with the group also. #1. With the help of Ellie Swanger (aka. EllieSS) I've created a new Sloan webpage dedicated to Sloans in the Revolutionary War. Check it out at: http://www.panama.phoenix.net/~fmitchel/patriots.html The objective is provide a listing of all Rev. War Sloan vets. It doesn't make any difference if they've been proven at the DAR or not. If you know of a Sloan Rev. War vet. that's not on the list, please let me know. A secondary objective of the Patriot page is make available transcribed copies of the Patriot or his widow's pension papers. This is always good historical info and frequently very good genealogical info. It also takes a lot of work and eyestrain to transcribed these records. If you happen to have any transcribed, PLEASE donate to the cause. (special thanks to Sloan Mason for the one she provided earlier) #2. Charlotte Sloan, sent me a lot of material on Sloans in Utah (THANKS!!), I processed the info and it will appear in my next Sloan database update. Charlotte also sent me what the LDS history center had on the Archibald Sloan of NC and my Archibald Sloan in Tn. Please note the IGI still has the two lines confused and mixed together. #3. This week I received a fantastic pile of research material from R. Philip Sloan of Fleetwood NC. Unfortunately, Philip doesn's have E-mail, lucky for me he just happen to run across my website. Philip's line is the "other" Sloan family of Rowan Co. NC. Henry Sloan and son John's descendants. (the Sloan/Smoot/Cowan connections) Philip's research DISPROVES the theory that this Henry came from NJ. I'm not aware of anyone else researching this line, so if there's anyone "out there" please speak up. Philip also publishes a very well done Sloan family newsletter annually for their family reunion. I'm gonna try to get Philip's permission to make this info available to everyone via my website or a SLOAN/SLONE posting. I also recived some very nice map/sketches of Rowan Co. showing all the rivers, streams creeks etc. Also a nice article about Tartans, I may be able to come up with a Tartan for the Sloans yet! Have a nice weekend. Frank Mitchell -- Visit the "Sloan Connection" http://www.panama.phoenix.net/~fmitchel/welcome.html

    1. SLOAN/SLOANE/SLONE - DAR Patriot Index
    2. I am a SLOAN descendant and an online volunteer for the DAR. I do Patriot Lookups for those seeking their forebears that may be listed in the DAR Patriot index. Below I am listing the SLOAN/SLOANE/SLONE Patriot as found in the DAR Patriot Index, Centennial Edition, c. 1990, p. 2689-90. If a forebear does not appear, it doesn't mean he didn't serve, just that he hasn't been proven by a descendant for DAR or SAR membership. For the patriot to be listed, the descendant would need to document all generations back to his service in the Revolution and submit application papers for membership and be approved. However, if a forebear is found in the index, one can order a copy of an application that may be the necessary link you need. Much info is listed on the applications. Let me emphasize that this is only an INDEX of documented patriots of the Revolution.. I do not have any pertinent info other than what is listed. To get more info, you would need to send for a copy (they are $5 each) to the DAR Hqtrs in Washington DC .. and you can check with your nearest National Archives for the patriots compiled service records. If the abbreviation PNSR or WPNS appears behind a name, it means there are pension records on the patriot (PNSR) or/and his widow (WPNS). These are usually very good sources of family info and are found at the Archives also. If you have any questions or if you need the address where to send for the application, I am happy to help! 3. I thought I might pass the message below along to the group.. I know there are several Fergus Sloan desendants around. Does anyone have any evidence that Fergus Sloan spent any time in Mecklenburg Co. NC.? I always find it amazing that there are so many links between this group of Sloans in Rowan/Iredell/Mecklenburg Co. NC. and the Sloans of Lancaster/Dauphin Co. PA. In addition, some researchers say that Capt. David Sloan of SC. also first settled in Mecklenburg Co. NC. ************************************************* On 29 May 98, "Tony & Sue (Skay) Abruscato" <sueskay@pacbell.net> Wrote: | | There appears to be another Sloan tie in with the Dewese family as well. | Jonathan Deweese, Aaron's brother was married to Margaret Boyd Irvin. | Their daughter Henrietta was married to John Sloan Hill, married in | Mecklenburg in 1835. 3. This is my first posting to this list. Last weekend I posted a query to the Mecklenburg Co., NC USGenWeb website about trying to find the maiden name of our Elizabeth, wife of Aaron Deweese. Aaron was the son of Hezekiah and Annis (Trickey) Deweese of Mecklenburg Co., NC. We had always suspected there was possibly of a Sloan connection. Aaron and Elizabeth had a son James Sloan Deweese, my husband's 2nd-ggrandfather. Aaron died about 1841 in Pickens Co., Alabama. Elizabeth and her four sons, Wilson Pinckney, John L., James Sloan, and William Albert appear on the 1850 census for Sabine Co., TX. Two days after I posted the query I got an answer. In James Sloan of Mecklenburg Co., NC, Rev. War pension application he lists a daughter Elizabeth Duest.....this being one of the spellings we find for our Deweese's. This James Sloan was married to Frances Brown. Needless to say, I haven't heard a word since from this researcher. The Deweese line has been traced back to 1595 Amsterdam Holland. I would really like to find more about this James Sloan. Can anyone out there help? Sue "I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look good either." Sue, I have your James Sloan and Francis Brown in my database. Francis Brown's parents were Benjamin Brown and Nancy Sloan so you have a double Sloan connection. You can find James Sloan at: http://www.gendex.com/users/fmitchel/sloan/D0018/G0000012.html#I14445 I'm not sure why, I didn't have Elizabeth in the database. But she is listed in the notes with the info comming from the same pension record. It's been a while since I've worked on this line, let me know if you have any questions. Sue >> Sue.. I may connect to a James Sloan.. not sure... My gg grandfather was Thomas Shields Sloan/Slone (b. ca. 1809) who m. ca. 1832 or so.... in Mecklenburg Co NC. to Margaret Alexander. Their first son, William W. Sloan was my g grandfather, b. in Mecklenburg ca. 1836. I have not been able to find Thomas' father, but found a JAMES SLOAN that m. an ELIZABETH SHIELDS ca. 1807.. (don't have it in front of me at the moment).. This family later went to KY and then finally to MO... Several of our family wonder if this James Sloan who m. Eliz. Shields might be the parents of Thomas Shields Sloan due to his name.. If we can find a connection, would appreciate it.. EllieSS@aol.com

    3. Hi, Yes, it's raining on this holiday in Panama. So, I decided to create a new page on my website. It located at: http://www.panama.phoenix.net/~fmitchel/distribn.html I call it "Sloans in America", and it's suppose to show the distrbution of Sloans in the U.S. However, this is not my data and I don't concur with 1850 & 1880 distribution. FYI, I recently received some nice material from Charlotte Sloan & Ruth Gifford. In particular some pages from "Sir Hans Sloane, Founder of the British Museum, Legend and Lineage. by William R. Sloan, 1981. This work confirms a lot of "unsourced" old Sloan surname material I've run across in the past. Just starting to process the data and don't expect to finish in the near future. Have a great Holiday.
