Maybe some of you have been there and know about this. I was recently in Glascow, Scotland on business. Had about an hour of free time to walk around the downtown area. Turned down Argyll Arcade, a wonderfully perserved arcade shopping lane and stumbled upon "Sloans Restaurant". Beautiful entrance, with great mahogany, stained glass, marble and tile. Had to go back that night for beer and food. Combined with the atmosphere was great. Restaurant dates to 1797. Was purchased on 7 February 1906 by David Sloan, formerly manager of the Horseshoe Bar in Drury Street. I don't think any Sloans still own the place, unless they own current title holder Alloa Pubs and Restaurants Limited. Anyone that heads to Glascow needs to visit: 62 Argyll Arcade, 108 Argyle Street, Glasgow. Charlie Sloan
Fellow Sloan Researchers: Tim and Gay Wall have been posting an Indian Papers series on the TEXAHOMA List. Today's postings had the following" "Here is the continuing...index of the Indian Pioneer Papers--Western History Collection---University of Oklahoma. There are 1012 microfiche in the whole collection, the index to the family history catalog states: These contain interviews (done during 1930s) of people married to Native Americans, living on or near a reservation, and other valuable information concerning life in Oklahoma Territory. Hi Folks, I received a lead on Sloan, Nevada yesterday, and CAN YOU BELIEVE IT! It looks like it's MY FAMILY. I haven't pin down the individual yet, but it's one of the Sloan's from Polk or Bradly Co. TN. Lenore Sloan Strong had this to say about Sloan, NV. "It was a water stop for the train going to Las Vegas from Barstow and was named for our branch of the family. Three of my great uncles worked near that area - Barstow, Calico, Las Vegas and there are several versions as to exactly which Sloan it was named for. The story is that on the first train through (with most of the locals taking a ride), when the train stopped for water, each place was given a name, and Sloan, NV was just one of them." Lenore say if you plan on having a reunion there - porta-potties are a must! Another Item of interest! Lyle Sloan sent me a nice transcribtion of an early newspaper article on Captain John Sloan of Westmoreland Co. PA. John was a Revolutionary War soldier and well know Indian fighter. I posted the story along with my other notable Sloans, so take a look and see why we've nicknamed this John "Bigfoot". http://www.panama.phoenix.net/~fmitchel/notable.html#Bigfoot Later, Frank Mitchell -- Visit "The Sloan Connection" http://www.panama.phoenix.net/~fmitchel/welcome.html

Catherine, Sorry I'm slow responding, however, I may have some good info on your family. Someone asked how to access the archives. This might be useful for new subscribers who have missed a few years of discussions. It from the Rootsweb, which runs the Sloan-Slone List and all the other Lists. There is a help page on how to do this at: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~help/help/search.htm If you are like me and don't like to read informative instructions, go directly to: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/searches/ There you can see a table of contents of the many different databases available for searching, If you want to search the Sloan-Slone list, chose the item on the bottom: "Search a million messages from over four thousand genealogy mailing lists" When you get the next screen type in the list name: Sloan-Slone When you get the next screen, pick the year you want and type in what you are looking for: i.e. Archibald and Sloan or John and Sloan and Duplin Be careful, It looks like a site you go to and never return!! I wasn't expecting so many responses, actually filled up my office mail box and several messages got returned. I did not have a plan for what to do with that information. SO, I stole Shirley's term "Sloan Geography" and decided to create another webpage. http://www.panama.phoenix.net/~fmitchel/places.html I'll give it some time to develop and then I'll post another notice on the SLOAN-SLONE LIST. Don't forget everything posted on the list is preserved in the Rootsweb archives. Hopefully, all these SLOAN places are preserved officially on a map someplace. I never new that the creek that I used to play in at my grandmother's was called Sloan Creek until I found it on a map. Some sites may be family tradition. I don't mind documenting both. BTW, I don't mean to be plugging the Street Atlas CD, but it really is a usefull research tool and it's cheap.. There are probably better mapping CDs available, however, I still waiting for the day the Townships appear on a CD. Anyway, I've discovered that if you zoom in to the lowest levels of the map CD, you can frequently find Sloan Creeks and Branches (not found in the search engines) that indicates the general area where the families actually lived. Enough rambling!. Specal Thanks to everyone, I'm really getting flooded with information. Thank goodness I only have 5 Mo. 22 days until retirement. You are not supposed to get "stressed out" over a hobby!! Frank Mitchell,

I agree about Genforum, I found two Sloan cousins, one a second cousin and one a third thru Genforum. The third cousin is coming to Vegas this week, bring pictures of our mutual Sloan ancestors from 1864. I am really excited about this. I have also been very lucky with at least four other surnames using Genforum. Last time I drove over to Jean, Nv we passed what was left of Sloan. Pop is the only name I ever knew the founder by. Since we shared the same last name, my brothers and I use to claim that it was "our" town. The Sloans of Sloan...if you ever see the place you wouldn't want to claim it...dumpy buildings in the desert but Vegas is growing out so fast that we may wish we had bought the land when it was less than $5.00 an acre. I am not sure there is much water out there. Beth Sloan -----Original Message----- From: Gordon M. Frank and all; Sloan, Clark County, Nevada, is/was located about 20 miles south of Las Vegas near what is now exit 27 on Interstate 15, where Hwy 146 from Henderson joins I-15. It got the Sloan name from a man who ran a service station/store/bar there in the early days of the automobile traffic from Calif to the gambling center in the desert. I do not know first hand if anything is there today or if the Interstate crunched the site. The place probably started up around 1945-48 with the growth of Las Vegas absorbing people, or at least their money, from Calif. Who is he?? Sloan, Duplin County, NC, is in the southern part, about halfway between the Wallace-TriCity exit of I-40 and Chinquapin to the east on Hwy 41. Sloan, NC was an active community about 1900. Perhaps someone else can add to or correct my info. I thought I knew my home state of NM pretty well, where is Sloan Canyon, NM??? Gordon Sloan in Arizona.
Franck Mitchell and all; A few years ago I was in Sloan, Duplin County, North Carolina... no post office, one very old house... area is mostly farm and pasture with some wooded... It is at least in the same county as John Sloan and Rachel Alderman, but there were Sloans all over that county... Gordon Sloan in Arizona.
