    1. [SLOAN-SLONE] Re: SLOAN Family Photographs
    2. Sam Sloan
    3. This is possibly a relative but is not a close relative of my cousin Jack Sloan who was born 6 Jun 1935 in Chicago, Illinois and died 18 October 2014 in Hurst Texas. His widow Wanda Cannon is still alive and active. Even though the name Wesley exists in my family we are probably not closely related because we descent from Creighton Sloan who was "born at sea Irish" in 1842 and died in 1916 and is buried with many family members in Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago. We do not know and perhaps he did not know who his parents were. Thank you for reviving the Sloan-Slone email group that has been dormant since the owner Frank Mitchell died in Panama years ago. 1. [SLOAN-SLONE] SLOAN Family Photographs
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the SLOAN Family of Michigan. The first is one of Jack SLOAN which appears to have been taken when he was about one year old in the 1920's or 1930's. The second photograph is identified as Jack SLOAN and Bob SLOAN which was taken at the F. Claire Obetts Studio in Grand Rapids, MI with the two appearing to be about one year to 3 years old. Based on the ages I think this is actually a photograph of Jack SLOAN and his brother Victor SLOAN since Bob was about 4-5 years younger than his brother Jack. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this family: Jack Dennis SLOAN was b. 21 Nov 1924 in Grand Rapids, MI to parents John Wesley SLOAN (1894-1952 son of Dennis H. SLOAN and Susanne A. SLOAN) and Aletha "Letha" M. HUNT (b. 1898 or 1900). Jack was one of four children born to this couple including a brother Victor SLOAN b. 1926. Jack married twice, first to Bernadine Violet "Bunny" JOHNSON and then later to Hope Louise POEDER (1937-1996). It is believed that Jack and Bunny had one child and he died 15 May 1997 in Grand Rapids, MI and is buried in Hillside Entrican Cemetery in Entrican, MI. Victor C. SLOAN was b. 28 Feb 1926 and is buried in the same cemetery with his brother. Census records provide the following information: 1930 census of Wyoming, MI: John W. SLOAN, age 35, married at age 26, born MI, parents born OH, a Federal Garage Mechanic Letha SLOAN, wife, age 31, married at age 22, born MI, parents born MI Jack SLOAN, son, age 5, born MI Victor SLOAN, son, age 4 years + 1 month, born MI Robert SLOAN, son, newborn, born MI 1940 census of Wyoming, MI: John SLOAN, age 45, born MI, a Post Office Garage Maintenance Man Letha SLOAN, wife, age 40, born MI Jack SLOAN, son, age 15, born MI Victor SLOAN, son, age 14, born MI Robert SLOAN, son, age 10, born MI James SLOAN, son, age 5, born MI I am hoping to be able to return these photographs to family and would appreciate you contacting me at your earliest convenience regarding the photographs and this family. Thanks, Shelley

    1. [SLOAN-SLONE] WAGER - SLOAN Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of George William WAGER which was taken at the Thomas Studio in Edmore, MI. The photograph looks like it was taken in the 1890's with Georgie is identified as being 14 months old at the time it was taken. The photograph is indicated as a gift "To Aunt Flossy". Other photographs in this group include the name Flossy SLOAN on the back so I'm thinking that is the same "Aunt Flossy". I'm hoping to be able to return the photograph to family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. He was in Grayson county. We have been unable to find a death certificate anywhere. One theory is that he died at home and was buried in a family cemetery somewhere. Another is that he didn't die in 1922 but that he either left or was sent away from the family home in the little township of Ruxton Texas. I am related to the SLOAN-SLONE family. My maternal grandmother was Dora Adeline Sloan, b. Jan 1884 in Miller Co. MO. She married my grandfather, Elmer Russell in June 1907 in Miller Co. MO. Her father was William Wilson *Sloan*, b. 10 Feb 1835, Mecklenburg Co NC. Dora was born to his 2nd wife, Mary Ann Smith (quite an original name don't you think? Ha!) Dora and Elmer lived their entire life in Miller Co., where my mother was born as well.. Her name was Jessie Russell who m. my father, Ray E. Stites in Maries Co. MO in 1937. William was the son of Thomas Shields Sloan and Margaret Clark Alexander who originated in Mecklenburg Co. I think if you checked on Raymond's census for birthplace that might be a leading step. Perhaps Raymond went back to the "old home place" ????? BTW... What county in Texas was he living in 1920? I believe they kept death records during that era.. You might want to check on that just to see if he had passed away. Good luck! 3. Yes, I have searched there but there isn't any information there but the "speculated" or "guessed at" information that we know. There isn't anything definite about the information there. Do you know anything about the family? 3. Yes Jerry... NC... but first went to Kentuckyy for about 20 years before embarking on the long wagon trip to Miller Co. MO ... sometime bet. 1850 -1860. I have more but that gives you a clue on my origin. I think if you checked on Raymond's census for birthplace that might be a leading step. Perhaps Raymond went back to the "old home place" ????? BTW... What county in Texas was he living in 1920? I believe they kept death records during that era.. You might want to check on that just to see if he had passed away. Good luck! 3. Thank you for writing, Ellie. I am helping my neighbor work on her genealogy. She has done a lot of work but Raymond Sloan is a mystery. My neighbor is his grand-niece. Raymond was born in Texas in 1900/1901/1902 depending on his exact birthday. He shows up in the 1920 census but isn't seen again. Some sources cite his death as 1922 but we can't find any conformation or corroboration of the date. There are all sorts of family rumors floating around about untoward things happening but you know how family traditions can get started and remain. We are even working with the possibility that Raymond didn't die in the 1920's but rather was sent away somewhere for some reason. Are you related to the Sloan family, Ellie?
