I have been attempting to find a marriage record for Thomas Sisson(3), since we don't know what the maiden name of his wife was. First I tried Portsmouth, and they didn't have it, they suggested nearby towns, so I emailed Newport, and this is their reply. No luck with Thomas, but I thought the mg. records I did receive might be important to our site. I will try the other towns, as she suggested. In case any of the names coincide with some of your research, here is what we have. The actual recordings by the minister(s) spell the name as "Syson" but our card index lists them all as "Sisson." Gideon Sisson to Mary Hart - 1762 Gideon Sisson to Mary Read - 1757 Bathshebea Sisson to William Ross - 1764 Sarah Sisson to John Davis -- 1751 Ruth Sisson to John Toman -- 1762 James Sisson to Freelove Fish - 1741 We have one record for a Freeman in the 1700's - John to Elizabeth Bryant - 1758 In 1709, an Edward Card married a woman with the last name of Corey. In 1715, Elizabeth Card married Oliver Arnold. In 1710, Joseph Married someone with the name "Hope" - possibly last name. In 1736, Joseph Card married Mary Weeden. In 1762, Phebe Card married Caleb Coggeshall. Also in 1762 a Phebe Card married James Millward. In 1764, Richard Card married Martha Tripp. In 1755, Sarah Card married John Pate. Back then, a minister would submit a list of names saying who he married and on what date. He may submit a list for an entire year -- or even later. No other information is given, other than to say he joined them in marriage. It was not until the 1850's that the requirement to register births, marriages and deaths came into being. You may also want to try Middletown (which is situated between Newport and Portsmouth) and Jamestown, which is on the other side of Narragansett Bay. Good luck in your search. He was allegedly married in 1714, in Portsmouth or Newport. The Portsmouth City Clerk's office does not have the record, and suggested I write to your office. Thomas Sisson married a Jane, (last name unknown), ca. 1714. The bride's last name was either Card or Freeman. The old uproven records differ. Thank you. Sincerely, Mary Jo Sisson March benoni@centurytel.net I know his wife's name was Jane, from his Will.
