Gr.-granddaughter of Jonathan Gates and Kate Morse, his wife; Sylvanus Titus. Jonathan Gates, of Hubbardston, served as a private, 1776, in the Massachusetts militia at Dorchester under Capt. Ezekiel Knowlton. He was born in Rutland, Mass. Sylvanus Titus served at the Ticonderoga Alarm, 1777, in the New Hampshire militia under Col. John Bellows. He died in Walpole and his will is on file in Keene, N. H.
