Dear list members, I will shortly be returning the list to unmoderated status. Your messages will post directly to the list. Some of you may not know that Rootsweb generates public archives of all its lists. Many list services do the same. If you post to a Rootsweb list, your e-mail address is visible on the public archive. Unfortunately, spammers sometimes go to archives to harvest e-mail addresses. If you receive any commercial, odd, or offensive e-mail out of the blue that appears to be related somehow to your participation on the list, that could be where the spammer got your address. The best thing to do with unwanted e-mail is simply to delete it without answering. Answering just tells the sender that your e-mail address is still a good address. If necessary, you can set your e-mail program to automatically delete such e-mails without your having to see them at all. If you have never used the "spam" or "junk" mail filter on your e-mail program, ask your local computer guru to show you how it works. If you have any concerns about any such spam that you receive, please contact me privately about it. Please do not post these concerns to the list. This would just give the spammer more publicity. We are soon approaching the summer vacation season. Rootsweb does not have a provision for temporarily unsubbing from lists. If you would like to unsub during a vacation time, to keep your mailbox from overflowing, you will need to unsubscribe before you leave and then resubscribe when you return. To unsubscribe, send a message either to: [email protected] (if you're subscribed to regular mode) or [email protected] (if you're subscribed to digest mode) with the word "unsubscribe" (without quotation marks) in the subject line and nothing in the body of the message. If you have an automatic signature line on your e-mail, delete it before sending. And have a wonderful trip! Thanks, Carol Sisson Regehr Sisson-L list mom -- [email protected]
