    3. Mary, I'm guessing that the "Richmond" refers to the County and not to the city. A James Sisson is first listed in Westmoreland County in the 1823 Personal Property Tax list. He would have been at least 16 years old to be listed. A James married in 1828, and is listed in the Richmond County Tax records until his death in 1846. I don't have a copy of a will for James. James F. could have been the son of this James, but since he died at 16, records will be sparse. This is purely a guess. There were several Sarah/Sally's in Richmond County in 1850. My best guess is that this one was the wife of a Henry Sisson. Henry and his brother Hiram sold land in 1843. Both had wives named Sally at the time. When Henry died in 1858, his will named "Sabilla" as his wife. This could all fit if the Sarah you found was his first wife, and she died in 1850. 3. Mary Jo, There were other Sisson families in Virginia in 1790. Robert Sisson's family was in Fairfax (Steven Sisson's line), Henry Sisson was in Westmoreland County, George Sisson (son of Bryan) was in Fauquier County, and Caleb (Barb Marsh's line) was in Rockbridge County. The John and Jesse who went to Clark County, MO were, in fact, sons of Caleb and Sarah Roach Sisson. Their line reads: Robert, William, Bryan, Caleb, John/Jesse... I don't have a Jesse in Richmond County during those years, and we know that John (Sue Kretchun's line)stayed in Richmond. We do know that Richard (son of John) re-settled in Georgia in about 1798. 3. I am still searching for clues for my great grandfather , Samuel Sisson, 1840, WV -1906 KS. My nephew's DNA didn't match any other Sisson on record so far. I finally got the guardianship papers (Nov. 1850 Ohio Co.VA) naming RICHARD SISSON as the father and guardian of ISOBEL, MARQUIS, REBECCA, STEWART D, and SAMUEL. Do any of these names fit in with anyone's family? Also in the mortality schedule, VA, 1850, I found two Sissons listed. SARAH Richmond 40 yrs, pleurisy Dec, and JAMES F, 16 yrs. 1. [SISSON-L] Maiden Names
    2. David Sisson
    3. Dear Friends and Cousins, I entered many a maiden name when I was typing up Sisson data from Dave and Joan Sisson's "Sisson Newsletter" and as I added data from the Sisson folks I was meeting online and by snail mail. When I uploaded all the data to the Sisson Genelogy site a few years ago, I used the feature of my genealogy software which allowed me to disguise the data of living persons so that their names and dates and places were all omitted and the simple word "Living" was all that appeared. Now it's time for me to say that I agree with Dick Eastman's advice as outlined in the article below. Dear Carol, please don't take this as a cry for you to suddenly reveal living people's data online. I simply want to call attention to the "rest of the story," as Paul Harvey would say. David Arne Sisson The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter (March 30, 2003) and is copyright 2003 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.RootsForum.com. The Security of Your Mother's Maiden Name This article is an updated version (with minor changes) of an article I published some months ago. The topic of "keeping your mother's maiden name secret" keeps reappearing all the time so this article still seems to be timely. I see frequent articles bemoaning the fact that genealogy information on the Web sometimes includes the maiden name of a living person's mother. These articles are usually accompanied by great hue and cry that this is a security risk because this piece of information is often used for security reasons. These same articles often suggest that ancestral information should not be placed on the Web because of "security issues." That's dumb! From where I sit, this is a perfect example of backwards thinking! Any institution that uses the mother's maiden name "for security purposes" is really behind the times and needs to quickly hire a security expert. Even novice security managers would immediately change that policy. In the United States and many other countries, mothers' maiden names and other personal information have always been available from numerous public sources. This information has always been in the public domain. The invention of the Internet did not really change anything. A mother's maiden name could easily be discovered fifty years ago, and the same is still true today. Any corporation that uses a mother's maiden name for security purposes obviously doesn't know much about security. I usually refuse to do business with companies that insist upon using my mother's maiden name as a security identifier. I don't want to do business with any company with a lame security policy. I advise you to do the same: boycott companies that have inadequate security policies. However, if you really want to do business with a company that has a policy of using your mother's maiden name for security purposes, please remember that you can always create a fictitious name on the spot. I did open a bank account some years ago and the bank clerk smiled when she asked for my mother's maiden name "for security purposes." She did blink a couple of times when I replied, "Fudpucker," but she wrote that name in the blank on the application form and didn't say anything. Nobody will ever find that name on a genealogy Web site of mine! There is no legal requirement to supply the correct maiden name, and the bank or other corporation really doesn't care what name you give them. All they want is something to enter in the blank space on their form - a name that you can remember when they ask. I use "Fudpucker" because it is a name I can remember and also because I find it amusing. However, you can use any name you wish. My recommendation is that you never, ever supply your mother's correct maiden name. By using a fictitious name, your security will not be compromised by a Web site or by a criminal's surreptitious visit to the state Vital Records Department. If an elected official or other bureaucrat ever tries to limit access to vital records, please feel free to send them a copy of this article. Tell them it's time to wake up and look at the real issues, and to stop trying to protect a maiden name policy that is ludicrous to begin with. Then vote against the politician in the next election. You don't want a backwards mentality like that in public office! If you send a damned fool to Washington, and you don't tell them he's a damned fool, they'll never find out. -- Mark Twain, 1883 A smarter politician would sponsor a bill to make it illegal for a financial institution to use a mother's maiden name or any other piece of public domain information for security purposes. But, then again, when did you ever see a smarter politician?

    1. [SISSON-L] True stories about one of my teachers:
    2. My dad , Ernest T. Sisson, a teacher, was in the superintendent's office, when an elderly teacher came in and approached the superintendent and said Mr._______, you need to get down to room 101, the kids are tearing that room apart. The superintendent's face turned red after he looked to see, who the teacher was that was responsible for that class, he turned to the elderly teacher and said, Mrs.________, that is your class. I do know the names that fit into that story, I am just not sure, if it is proper to name them. Another story, Mrs. _______ rode home every day with another teacher, as she was to old to dreive. She was about 80 or 81 years old. There were three cars parked together. The one that she needed to be in was a station wagon, the other two were not. She was in the wrong car. I said Mrs._______, you are in the wrong car, she said thank you and got out and got into another car, which still wasn't the right car. I couldn't get up the nerve to tell her that she was still in the wrong car. I am sure that she thought that I had tricked her, but I didn't. These two things happened around 1961. Larry L. Sisson

    1. Re: [SISSON-L] Edward O Sisson New State
    2. Larry, So far as I can tell Septimus would be in the records, immigration records. He also taught at a college in Ohio State. He was an author, and the vice president of the veterinary association there. Sisson Hall was named after him. I find no records of Septimus and Katherine Oldham of having any children throughout the census none are ever listed. He also died in California as did his brother Edward. According to the 1880 census in England, George the father remarried after the death of his first wife in 1875, an Amelia unknown. And more children were born. One of them is Frank W. born 1878 in Gateshead, Durham, England, Cuthbert G. born 1879 in Morpeth Northumberland, England and a Amelia M. born 1880 in Bothal Mill, Northumberland England. In 1880 James, George, Anne, Arthur W., and John were all unmarried and living in a seperate household. I hope this helps, I have obtained this information from census records and the latter day saints, so all is not proven but assuming I am on the right track. As far as occupations James was a Accountant, George a Chemist, Arthur and John insurance agents, Edward and Septimus were professors and authors. Janice

    2. Thanks Janice, I believe that may give us a new area of England, that we have not researched. I will have to check with David Arne Sisson and David Martin to see if our England Research Fund has looked into that area. David and David, if you read this, Gateshead, Durham , England is in the northern part of England, north of York County, and east of Cumberland County and east/northeast of Westmorland County. It is not far from the Scotland border, and about 3 counties northeast of Wales. If we have not looked into that area, I would like to have our English genealogist do so, I am willing to make a small contribution toward that, if it hasn't already been done. Let me know. Larry L.
