    1. [SISSON-L] Power and Ancestors
    2. David Sisson
    3. Hello, Friend. I wrote the following paragraphs at my day-job office this morning about 10 o'clock. I didn't know that the electricity at our house was being restored as I wrote. I'm really glad to be back among all my email friends. David Ice an inch thick and more. Fallen tree limbs. Downed wires. The power went out at our house on Friday, April 4, about 9:30 PM. My family increased by a returning son and his wife and child. No light, heat, nothing electrical - or computerized. This morning our indoor thermometer read 41. No baths. No breakfast until we reach the bakery. We may have power by Thursday evening, 6 days later. What if this powerlessness lasts as long as it did the last time, in March 1991, when we were without electricity for 13 days! I thank God for Thomas Edison and for his many inventions (the incandescent light bulb, the phonograph, the movie camera and projector, among many others). I thank God most of all for Edison and his gift of whole electrical systems for immense geographical areas, able to send electricity into the homes and factories and offices of this entire nation and the world. I pray that we may learn to maintain these electrical systems so that electrical service can continue uninterrupted. It will take more creative minds than mine to think of alternatives to the "telephone" pole or underground wiring. (But our phone lines never stopped working, in 1991 or now!) At the same time I realize that interrupted power is very instructive. It reminds me that "we are dust and that unto dust we shall return." My own personal dust is reminding me that I die partially every day. I have millions of dead skin cells that want to be washed away. We do have a gas water heater, and somehow it runs without electricity. I could take a shower, but the thought of drying off with a cold towel and stepping into a 41-degree bathroom persuades me to wait for the restoration of power. What else? Cold toilet seats. Frozen food spoiling. Our picnic cooler full of perishables on the patio. The blast of 25-degree air coming in through the open patio door when we retrieve something from the cooler. My tower of blankets and sleeping bags slipping to the floor in the middle of the night. Waking in the night and not being able to tell what time it is. Of course we have warm cars, work places, churches, libraries, shopping malls, to give us warm days. It is only the nights that carry us back to our roots. Think of our ancestors who lived and died before Edison's miracles gave us light and heat. And not only our 19th century ancestors. Think of our medieval ancestors, and those who lived under Roman emperors or barbarian chiefs. It takes this power outage to make me think of our remote ancestors, the hunter-gatherers and the early farmers of 4 or 5 thousand years ago. Or of those desperate souls who left Africa and set off for better lands searching for enough food to live, never mind the cold. Heat and its lack have been governing our lives here in upstate New York for almost a week now, but both heat and food and their lack governed the lives of those whose DNA we carry. It may be chilly and depressing here in Rochester, but sooner or later our lives will return to "normal." What a debt we owe to those remote fathers and mothers who lived whole lives of cold and hunger, bringing children into that dangerous world. I wonder if they ever thought of the lives of their children's grandchildren. Were they able to hope for more than their own lives? Did they ever think of their remote descendants? Did they thank their ancestors for surviving? Do we?

    1. [SISSON-L] William Sisson Mississippi
    2. I have a little more information on William Sisson who was living in Mississippi as early as 1812. William married Anna Fullwood Norris Fogle on Jan 18, 1819. Anna died in 1829 and is buried in the Dent Cemetery. According to the census for 1820.There is one female age over forty-five and two males between 10-16 and two males between 26 and 45. I am placing William at approximately 45 because of Anna age at death in 1829 was 55. This who have this William born about 1775. The others listed in the household are believed to be the children of Thomas Lane Norris, Anna's first husband. She did not have children with George Fogle. So none of these children I presume to be Williams. William is not present in 1830. The oldest living Sisson in 1830 is Eldridge age 60 - 70. But this does explain why the Sisson's and Norris families were found living next to each other for over 40 years. Janice

    3. For those of you on the list who sent me this Sisson site http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~dasisson/ and who are interested in the Dye-Sisson line listed below there is a mistake on Fauntleroy Dye b 1742 he didn't die in 1742. Fauntleroy Dye was a son of Avery Dye and Catherine Mackmellion....He died on July 31, 1820 married Anne Kelly (d/o Matthew Kelly and Sarah Edison) and had eight children of which two were my direct ancestors..... my gggg grandmother Martha Patsy Dye md Almond P. Sanders,.......and my gggg grandfather, Martin Hopkins Dye b Dec 2, 1765 md Haney Henson and another son, Avery Dye md Sarah Puckett is the line that President Harry Truman came from. My Fauntleroy Dye b 1742 is buried in Perryville, Mercer Co, KY The cemetery is called the Perryville Cemetery. His daughter Patsy, and son Martin Hopkins Dye are buried there too. There is much documentation on this line and both these lines continue to my grandmother Maude Ann Dye b April 28,1889 died February 19, 1963.........her parents were John Taylor Dye and Louisa Jane Dye.......second cousins....John Taylor Dye was the son of James W. Dye and Mary Jane Allen and Louisa Jane Dye was the daughter of Milton Samuel Dye and Mary K. Timberlake.......I was raised on the old Dye Farm in LaRue Co, KY Hope this helps someone looking for their line. Marsha Hamilton at [email protected] Campbellsville, Taylor Co., KY...

    3. There are several Martin Dye's but I believe you are speaking of the one below in my first attachment ........I have volumes of information on the Dye family.....but not much on the first Martin. I am entering all my material into my FTM as I can. I have researched this Dye family for about 20 years and have accumulated pages of material. I have just started putting it in the computer. I go to Virginia about once a year to research and I was fortunate enough to have my grandmother's information. She was Maude Ann Dye-Tucker b Apr 28, 1889 d Feb 19, 1963. I just sent you an attachment on some of the early Dye's that I think you are interested. Marsha -- Just follow Sharon's instructions on the web site for information about Robert Sisson and thank you for posting the DYE information. I would like to know more about the DYE family, especially, the generations of Martin and Avery DYE along with children -- George, Ruben & Raleigh -- while residing in Charles County between the years 1690-1790. Robert Sisson's grandson William II and his family resided in Charles County between 1735-1767. William Sisson II married Frances Gower in 1727. After Frances died, he married the widow Elizabeth Hudson in 1752. William Sisson II had seven children -- Stanley, Ruben, William III, Caleb, Henry, Elizabeth and Mary. On the 1758 Charles County Tax List, William Sisson II, William Sisson III, Ruben Sisson and Avery Dye can be found in the Durham Parish Lower Part District. In addition, the Charles County 1775-1778 Census (Revolutionary War) list both Ruben Dye and Ruben Sisson as male persons eighteen years old an upward in the lower hundred, Durham Parish. Earlier Charles County notations (pre-1730) concerning the Dye family might be helpful with our Sisson research. And could explain why William Sisson II & Frances Gower remove from Richmond County. We do know William Sisson II inherited Charles County land from a Peter Babb on January 21, 1735, but know little about Peter Babb. Do you have any information on a Babb-Dye family connection? Cheers! Steven Sisson Of Eugene Henry Jr, Eugene Henry Sr, Walter George, Eugene Townsend, John Augustine, Robert Townsend, Robert, William III, William II, William I, and Robert Sisson* of Richmond-Lancaster County, Virginia (1630-1699). * DNA ancestral patriarch.

    3. Hello Sisson list, I posted this once before but received no replies. As this is such an active list and so knowledgeable about the Sisson family, I thought I would try again. I am in the very unusual position of having two contradictory sources for information concerning who my 6th great grandparents were. When I say source, I really mean source i.e. printed books and not just opinions or online downloads. As one of the two possibilities is a descendant of the Rhode Island Sisson line, I thought I would see if anyone on this list can prove or disprove this line. My fifth great grandparents were Jonathan Champlin and Mary Moon. According to one source, Mary's parents were Ebenezer Moon and Elizabeth Drake. According to the other source, Mary's parents were Jonathan Moon and Lydia Dawley. Since Jonathan Moon was a Sisson descendant, I was hoping someone could help me determine if he was the father of Mary Moon Champlin. According to information from the Sisson website at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~dasisson/richard/aqwg08.htm. Jonathan Moon is the great great grandson of Richard Sisson (1608-1684) and Mary (d. 1692) Sisson of Rhode Island through their daughter, Anne Sisson Tripp. Anne's son Job Tripp was the father of Ann Tripp Moon who was the mother of Jonathan Moon. So, does anyone know if Jonathan Moon had a daughter Mary Moon who married Jonathan Champlin? Thanks for your help. Regards, Neil

    3. This is especially for those Sissons with ties to Robert Townsend Sisson of Fairfax, Va. I recently purchased the 1995 book, Fairfax Station: All Aboard! from the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum. (You can have a copy by sending $29 to Friends of the Fairfax Station, Inc. P.O. Box 7, Fairfax Station, VA 22039. Will send the book upon receipt of your check.) The president of the Friends of Fairfax Station writes, "We have a framed newspaper clipping from the late 1800's in the museum advertising the Sisson Coach service from Fairfax ...." The book is terrific, chuck full of photos and graphics. Sisson references to Robert Townsend Sisson in the Amer. Rev., the family divided during the Civil War, a 1943 Sisson reference, etc., are mentioned on 6 different pages. (info. provided by Wm. Page Johnson II). It is full of American history from George Washington to Clara Barton, WWII to 1995. Laura Sisson-Thompson
