    3. Dear Joan, Great article. Wonderful person! I hope someone on the List recognizes this George Sisson. He doesn't appear in the Richard and Mary database of course, because living folks are simply called "Living" - to protect against identity theft. And he may not appear *anyway* if his line has not been gathered by Dave and Joan of Newsletter fame, or by some contributor to the database in my time - or in Carol Regehr's. I hope someone will recognize him. What a guy! 2. Hi David and list, A friend in Middletown, RI mailed me a clipping from the Providence Journal, April 25, 2003 with a great article on a current George Sisson, age 84, formerly of Portsmouth, RI, and living in Bristol since 1963. He is quite a dynamic individual and I was wondering how his line might be connected to my husband's Sissons, also originally from Portsmouth, RI. He brought Cable TV to RI; has just recently been awarded the annual service award from the state Historical Preservation ands Heritage Commission; helped create Colt State Park and the East Bay Bike Path, saved Coggeshall Farm (Revolutionary War era), now a living farm museum; helped to restore the Bristol Co. Statehouse; protected the environment as a member of the Coastal Management Council. His grandfathers owned working farms in Portsmouth. After serving in W.W.II he started a radio WALE, a radio station in Fall River, Mass. and then moved on to TV with WTEV in New Bedford. He currently hosts a public access TV show called East Bay Press Conference. Of course, being a SISSON in RI, he must be in someone's line that subscribes to this list and possibly from Richard and Mary of Portsmouth, RI. Thanks for any clues. Regards, Joan Joan L. 1. [SISSON-L] Sisson was the 2867th most "popular" surname in the USA in 1990
    2. David Sisson
    3. Hello friends and cousins, Surf to http://www.census.gov/genealogy/names/ and you will see three clickable files. The first one ("dist.all.last") details the distribution of all last names, like Sisson, in the 1990 federal census. The second one ("dist.male.first") does the same thing for men's and boys' first names. I'll let you guess what the third one ("dist.female.first") does. To quote the above site -- Each of the three files, (dist.all.last), (dist. male.first), and (dist female.first) contain four items of data. The four items are: (1). A "Name" (2). Frequency in percent (3). Cumulative Frequency in percent (4). Rank In the file (dist.all.last) one entry appears as: MOORE 0.312 5.312 9 In our Search Area sample, MOORE ranks 9th in terms of frequency. 5.312 percent of the sample population is covered by MOORE and the 8 names occurring more frequently than MOORE. The surname, MOORE, is possessed by 0.312 percent of our population sample. The data is based on the 1990 US Federal Census. Here is the same kind of information regarding the surname Sisson SISSON 0.004 56.480 2867 SISSON ranks 2867th in terms of frequency. 56.480 percent of the sample population is covered by SISSON and the 2867 names occurring more frequently than SISSON. The surname, SISSON, is possessed by 0.004 percent of our population sample. I have figured out a couple more stunning facts -- 43.52 percent of the people have surnames even more rare than SISSON (100% less 56.580%). SISSON is the 2867th surname listed in a grand total of 88799 surnames, so 85932 surnames are even more rare than SISSON. Sharon Miller is going to tell me I have too much time on my hands! <g> David Arne Sisson

I want to mention also that Howard Watkins has contributed copies of a couple of these applications to the Guion-Miller Roll, for Harry Sisson and Lady Sisson. 3. Dear list members, I will shortly be returning the list to unmoderated status. Your messages will post directly to the list. Some of you may not know that Rootsweb generates public archives of all its lists. Many list services do the same. If you post to a Rootsweb list, your e-mail address is visible on the public archive. Unfortunately, spammers sometimes go to archives to harvest e-mail addresses. If you receive any commercial, odd, or offensive e-mail out of the blue that appears to be related somehow to your participation on the list, that could be where the spammer got your address. The best thing to do with unwanted e-mail is simply to delete it without answering. Answering just tells the sender that your e-mail address is still a good address. If necessary, you can set your e-mail program to automatically delete such e-mails without your having to see them at all. If you have never used the "spam" or "junk" mail filter on your e-mail program, ask your local computer guru to show you how it works. If you have any concerns about any such spam that you receive, please contact me privately about it. Please do not post these concerns to the list. This would just give the spammer more publicity. We are soon approaching the summer vacation season. Rootsweb does not have a provision for temporarily unsubbing from lists. If you would like to unsub during a vacation time, to keep your mailbox from overflowing, you will need to unsubscribe before you leave and then resubscribe when you return. To unsubscribe, send a message either to: [email protected] (if you're subscribed to regular mode) or [email protected] (if you're subscribed to digest mode) with the word "unsubscribe" (without quotation marks) in the subject line and nothing in the body of the message. If you have an automatic signature line on your e-mail, delete it before sending. And have a wonderful trip! Thanks, Carol Sisson Regehr Sisson-L list mom -- [email protected]
