Hi Laurie Welcome to your extended family. Caleb was known as the Squire of Rockbridge -- Big land owner around 1790 to 1810. There are a few Sissons in the area after that -- Abram Sisson in 1820. I reside in the Shenandoah Valley and could probable do a look up on the Hollingsworth family over Thanksgiving weekend. Note to Sharon: I thought Robert K. Sisson of Ohio (around 1880) was kin to the Caleb Sisson branch from Rockbridge-Roanoke. Don't we have a DNA link on that line? Hello and welcome, Laurie. Westmoreland and Richmond Counties are certainly home country to one of the major lines of Sissons. I have a good bit of information about the families in that area. If you'll send me the names of your Sisson grandfathers as far back as you can, I may be able to connect you back to the founding Sisson, Robert of Richmond County. Hi, Laurie, and welcome to the Sisson List. There isn't much information available about the Hollingsworth family, because they are still living people. A daughter of Truman A. Sisson married a Hollingsworth man. Truman A. Sisson was from western Virginia, descended from Robert Sisson by way of Caleb Sisson, who moved into the Rockbridge County, VA area after the Revolution. We don't have any information on Hollingsworths beyond the current generation, so can't help with your deadend, I'm afraid. But I'd be glad to help with any Sisson questions. There are a number of suggested sources for the Sisson name, including the reference to Soissons. But we have nothing more than speculation to back them up. Hi ! I just joined the listserve. My name is Laurie Sisson (Also!) and my family is from Westmoreland County. I have always lived in Maryland because my grandfather, Benjamin Sisson, made it up this way before my father was born. I am looking forward to talking to everyone! Laurie
I have found references to Hollingsworths in the Sisson line and am interested because my maiden name is Hollingsworth and I have hit deadends with this family research. The town of Soissons near Paris was one traditional Sisson beginning. The family story says they went to England to conquor. Does anyone else have this story? Laurie Sisson
I was informed that the "assertion that John Allerton (is a son of Isaac 3rd, grandson of Isaac 2nd, and great-grandson of Pilgrim Isaac Allerton and his wife Fear Brewster Allerton has never been proven." Do we Sissons have any proof? It seems that Isaac Allerton (1685-1750) is not named in his father's will. Did he die childless before his father? Has anyone found any Allerton family documents that John Allerton is a son of Isaac Allerton? Thank you for any insight, Laurie H. Sisson
The wine tasting cup? I'm not sure, but I did run across a case study in an MIS textbook by Laudon & Laudon (8th edition, published in 2003 by Prentice-Hall) that I use in a course I teach. Here are the highlights from the case. Peter Sisson founded WineShopper.com in 1997 with $46 million in venture capital raised from several investors (including Amazon.com). WineShopper.com was a very technically ambitious online wine retailer. According to the case, they took too long to get online and spent too much money. In August of 2000, WineShopper.com merged with Wine.com. The merged company was known as Wine.com. It also spent too much money and didn't take in enough revenue. In April 2001, Wine.com eventually went the way of the other dot-com bust companies and made massive layoffs. A more conservative competitor, EVineyard.com purchased its assets, mostly customer lists and the Wine.com Web domain name. Contact me directly if you'd like to see more details about WineShopper.com from the case, including quotes from Peter Sisson and the source articles for the case. Kim Troboy [email protected] (Take out the -NOSPAM- part of this address to email me.) (ps. My Mom is descended from the Sissons in Gilmer County, GA, who moved there from western NC and in SC just across the state line from Charlotte, NC. The line possibly came from Virginia before that. Our Sisson line is Pascal Spencer Sisson, George Wilburn Sisson, William Henry Sisson, and Richard B. Sisson. Before that, the line is possibly David, Thomas Jr., Thomas, William Jr., William, Robert, and Thomas Sisson who immigrated from England to Jamestown, VA.) -----Original Message----- From: Laura Thompson [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, November 14, 2003 7:52 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [SISSON-L] Sisson items on ebay For those like me who rarely think of it, you might want to look at www.ebay.com and type in Sisson. I found a site that lists heirlooms that have been found and the site owner lists them in an effort to reunite them with family. There is a postcard listed in regard to A.L. Sisson. The website is at http://www.surnameheirlooms.com Cathy
There's a website where you can search for old wills in the UK: http://www.documentsonline.pro.gov.uk/wills.asp There are 67 hits on "sisson", mostly wills from the 1700s and 1800s. There is also an explanation of how to order copies of wills that interest you. (Thanks Ann for this tip!) Carol Sisson Regehr Sisson-L list mom -- [email protected]

Sue, I wish I had taken down the name of the park ranger who was so excited to share the Sisson story with me when I visited the Fredericksburg battlefield. He had the other ranger haul out the book to copy down the two pages on the event (unfortunately, I didn't think to ask the year the book was published - Noel Harrison's Fredericksburg Battlefield site, H.E. Howard publisher). The story went, "On December 13, 1862, a member of the Eighth Ohio infantry and other Union soldiers broke down the front door of Sisson's store and discovered that a civilian -- perhaps Sarah Sisson - was inside. With bullets and shell fragments ......the Ohioan recalled the wounded comrades they had carried into the building [who] began to beg for water. The Federals dragged the poor woman out of her cellar and forced her out into the pelting shower of missiles to guide them to obtain water from an outside well. ..... He also recalled that the soldiers utilized Sisson's Store as a blockhouse for most of the day. The park ranger gave me detailed verbal directions to locate the current day building, but since it wasn't one from my lineage, I didn't try to locate the site. Good luck with your cemetery search. Yes, Joyce, Virginia is chock full of history that doesn't seem so many years away as I grow older. Alas, according to the book below, the original Sisson brick store is no longer standing. Destroyed in 1893, a frame building was subsequently erected on the site. If you give me your address, I will mail to you the pages describing the store and the story about the woman who lived there during the Fredericksburg battles. Hello, While vacationing last week in Virginia, I stopped at the Fredericksburg Battlefield. After giving my last name to the attendant, he excitedly gave me information regarding SISSON's STORE, constructed in 1854. In the 1860 census, it shows it was owned by David Sisson, age 45, along with Sarah Sisson, age 38 and Landon Sisson, age 11. They were born in Virginia. Sisson's Store was a prominent landmark on the path of the Union attacks on Marye's Heights during the Dec. 1862 and May 1863 Battles of Fredericksburg. If anyone is interested in a more detailed description of the event, let me know. I was given pp.172-173 from Noel Harrison's Fredericksburg Battlefield site, H.E. Howard, publisher. Laura Sisson-Thompson, WI., of the Robert Sisson line, Fairfax, Va.

Does anyone here recognize this man? The record shows that W. L. Sisson was private in Company A, Ist Battalion Texas Sharpshooter's. On the roll of the company for the months of September and October, 1863, he is reported absent, left sick at hospital, Marksville, Louisiana, since February 20, 1863. No later record found.
