This is also in the book _Descendants of Richard and Mary Sisson_ on pp. 220-221. 2. David A Sisson
    3. Dear Steven, Congratulations on finding Robert Sisson in the Valley Forge Encampment lists. That is a wonderful discovery. I wonder whether any of my folks were there. Could you explain how you found the Valley Forge site and what its address is? Thanks very much also for noting Jack Sisson's presence in the Revolution. I remember some talk a few years ago on this list about Jack Sisson. He was a slave belonging to one of Richard and Mary's descendants. There was a fairly extensive article about him in the Sisson Newsletter edited by Dave and Joan Sisson. Jack was "allowed" to enlist in the militia. He fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill, if I recall correctly. I hope I am correct in reporting that, but I am relying on my frequently faulty memory. I'm sure that one of my cousins will correct me if I am wrong. I wish I could remember how to find the references to him. I've tried using the Pico search engine that Carol as furnished for us on the Sisson site - to no avail. And my index to the Newsletter refers only to "blood" descendants (and their spouses) of Richard and Mary. It was interesting > that that was the name of the Virginia commander Robert Sisson served under. The Parkers are a very historical family in VA. The great grandson of Capt. Alexander Parker and Col. Richard Parker was the hanging judge at Abolitionist John Brown's trial. The parallels with the Sisson family and connection to John Brown is fascinating. The Parker family had several elected members to the VA General Assembly. I believe Col. Richard Parker, who managed to escape capture in the Battle of Charleston with a handful of soldier from the 2nd VA regiment, -- later died from wounds at the Battle of Yorktown. I have a copy of a letter by another brother, Capt. Thomas Parker, who vouched for Robert Sisson as a soldier in his company. Robert Sisson's great grandfather, Robert (& Amye) the patriarch of the Sisson family owned land in Richmond County. South of Templeton's Crossing in Richmond County, there is a small stream there named, Sisson Run, which flows into the Pantico River. This land was originally deeded to the Wm. Pierce family in 1666, but later sold to the Parker family. Sisson Run is located on this land plot that was owned back around 1790s by the Parker family. ......................... - Copy of Robert Sisson's handwritten petition to the Virginia General Assembly, 1791: To the Honorable, the Speaker, and Members of the General Assembly of Virginia. 2. Steven, My daughter is planning to join the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is joining under the ancestors of each of her father's grandparents. John Sisson and Capt. Samuel Thrall, Sr. We also have an Isaac N. Parker b.1814 in our family. It was interesting that that was the name of the Virginia commander Robert Sisson served under. I guess most of the people in the country at that time were involved. The Sissons were here! I appreciate your sending the information. Laurie Sisson

    1. [SISSON-L] Robert Sisson, Valley Forge Encampment
    2. Sisson List: Recently, 5th cousin Wm. Page Johnson of Fairfax discovered our mutual ancestor, Robert Sisson, on the muster rolls at Valley Forge, PA. You might note the web page database spelling is off [Robert Sissor], but we are positive that he is our Robert Sisson, who served under Lt. Colonel Richard Parker in the 2nd Virginia Regiment. http://www.secondvirginia.org/history.html Robert Sisson, my 6th generation grandfather, served in the Revolutionary War 1775-1782. He enlisted in the American Army Oct. 1775; Age fifteen at the Richmond County Court House located in the Northern Neck of Virginia. Robert Sisson fought at the battles of Brandywine - Philadelphia, Mud Bank Fort, Monmouth Court House, Somerset, Stony Point and Charleston. His Revolutionary War service included the harsh winters encampments of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and Morristown, New Jersey. He probably crossed the Delaware with General Washington. He was commended by Colonel Christian Febiger, Esq., for his 'extraordinary valor' during the first night raid by American forces at the Battle of Fort Stony Point, New York. Robert Sisson was part of the 'forelong,' which included 100-Virginians volunteers from the 2nd Virginia Regiment who first charged the gates of the British garrison. "In May 1779, General Clinton led his troops up the Hudson River, capturing the fort at Stony Point as well as the one at Verplanck. In response, Washington personally prepared an assault to retake Stony Point. In the early morning hours of July 15th, three columns of continental soldiers, 1200 men in all, converged on the fort. The fort was swiftly overwhelmed. Fifteen American soldiers were killed and 83 were wounded . Of the redcoats troops, 63 were killed, 74 were wounded and 543 were taken prisoner." http://www.americanrevolution.com/BattleofStonyPoint.htm While serving in the Virginia 2nd Regiment, Robert Sisson marched from New Jersey to South Carolina twice. He was captured at the battle of Charleston and spent 2-years on a British prison ship where only one of three prisoners survived the incarceration. Most colonial prisoners starved to death and were throw overboard. He survived the British prisons, eventually married and became a farmer in Northern Virginia. He resided in Fairfax, Virginia until his death in 1825. My 6th generation grandfather Robert Sisson is listed as a Revolutionary War Patriot in the Library of Congress. His sons, Robert Townsend Sisson (VA) and Vincent Sisson (KY), served bravely in the War of 1812. The Fairfax City Hall annex, the 'Sisson House,' was owned by his grandson, Robert Lewis Sisson and built in 1825. Two great grandsons, William and Vincent Sisson, rode with Abolitionist John Brown during the 1850s in the Bloody Kansas-Missouri border wars. And great grandson John A. Sisson served as a Union Scout during the Civil War in Arlington, Virginia. In 2002, the Virginia General Assembly honored Sgt. Robert Sisson service to Virginia during the Revolutionary War with a House of Delegates memoriam. I also am a member of the Sons of the American Revolution (ID 158927). If you join us at the upcoming Sisson reunion, I will have on display copies of Robert Sisson's 2nd VA Regiment pay records (1776-1779), 1790 Land Bounty Warrant, 1795 Petition to the General Assembly, commanding officer letters & General Assembly journal pages, 1818 RW Pension Statement and an 1820 Minute Book reference to his Revolutionary War duty. And there is much more. I also discovered a Jack Sisson from Rhode Island that might be of interest to our New England cousins (listed below Robert's information). SISSON GATHERING 2004 will take place June 23-27 in Richmond, VA! Check the web page for updated details: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~dasisson/ Happy Hunting! 3. Hmm: George Wing Sisson Jr. is a cousin of mine. I have a copy of a letter by his father GWS Sr. on his company letterhead. This family owned the Racoquette River Paper Company in Potsdam, New York and I have corresponded with Francis TenEyk Sisson who still lives in the Potsdam area. The letter was from George W Sisson Sr. to Mrs. C. W. Durland of Fredrick, South Dakota (spelled Fredick, So. Dacota) It was the first clue I had that my gggrandfather James Samuel Sisson had relatives in upstate New York!
