Hello Everyone, The New England Historic Genealogical Society's online newsletter included this tidbit that I found interesting. Maybe you will too. "The Rhode Island Historical Society has had a difficult few years. Under great financial pressure they briefly considered selling a Colonial-era desk that could have brought up to $12 million into their endowment. They eventually decided against the sale, and the organization’s financial difficulties seem to be behind them. For those of you looking for Sisson in the Hoosick NY area please be aware that many many of the people living in that area moved around A LOT. I am researching some "shirt tail cousins" of Sissons and have discovered that they are just as likely to be found in White Creek New York (part of which is actually Cambridge New York and is in the WRONG place on the microfilm rolls for the census of I believe 1904, it's on there but in the wrong alphabetical location) also they are found in Bennington, Arlington and Shaftsbury Vermont often. They were wandering around both long and short term, it seems that they frequently spent the summer months on farm property and then moved to cozier and closer to amenities locations for the winter months. I have the diary of a Sisson cousin living in White Creek during 1904 and the description of what this elderly widow went thru in winter in a house dating from 1792- and not much modernized since- is enough to make anyone want to escape to a better warmer more convenient location. Also when looking for Hoosick please be aware that at one time this was Charlotte County before it became Washington County and also variant spelling of Hoosac. Due to health I am not able at this time to do much physical research but I do have pics of local houses etc and also a working knowledge of local cems etc if any one needs help. Also please be aware that many people in this area were Quakers and therefore many graves remain unmarked, there are a few later date stones erected in the Old Quaker Cemetery but even in the non-religious cem it is possible to make out family plots where the older graves are not marked alongside newer ones that have stones. A beautiful area and one that inspired many local residents to temporarily abandon their staunch Quaker pacifism when the sound of the fighting was literally over the hill in Waloomsac, the actual site of the Battle For Bennington. The fighting could be heard from White Creek (and no doubt Hoosick also) and many men left their fields and went to defend their corner of the world. The wounded were carried up a long steep and dreadful road- don't think it has been improved from then til now-and treated at a Quaker families hat shop, a cousin to the Ethan Allen bunch. Some Allen's remained home and this has left a divide in the family thru time. There are still Sissons in the area today. judith in NY

Hi Everyone, I am meeting my brother, Bill, the lst of August in Albany, NY to do some genealogy research in the State Archives. We are relatively new at this so if any of you have more information or any hints for research, we'd appreciate hearing from you. My line is: D. Reid Sisson, born 1901 in Goodland Twp, MI, (married Edith Walton , I have that line going back to 1776 in CT) John Sisson, born 1863 in MI, (married Jennette Reid, I have that info to 1801 in Scotland) Gilbert Sisson, born 1833 in Oakland Co. MI, ( married Clarinda Perry) Isaac Sisson, born 1801 in NY or VT,(married Hannah Potter, researched back to 1584, London, England, by Orchard Park, NY Historian, Sue Kulp) The mystery is Isaac's father, John. According to information submitted by Lowell Lavelle (deceased) Clark, John was born Oct. 12, 1784 in Danby Rutland, VT and married to Chloe Clark born 1781 in Danby VT, died Oct. 17, 1825 in Ballston Spa, NY. This would seem to indicate John is the son of George (pg 91 of Joan and David's book) but there are several discrepancies. I talked to Lowell Clark's sister a couple of years ago but she did not have a file for either Sisson or Clark. By the way, for those of you who met Bill's son, Matthew, at the Rochester Gathering, he successfully completed his first year at University of Michigan in the Honors Program although his interest seems to be leaning toward Astro-biology rather than Astro-physics. We are happy that he is interested in helping us with the genealogy research. We're also going to do some hiking along the Appalachian Trail, white water rafting and eventually hoping to end up in Acadia Nat'l Park in Maine. We look forward to seeing you at the 2008 Sisson Gathering, Lois Sisson Fountain

To my knowledge, there is no Jolly in this line, though we are one big happy, happy family. Of all the period documents I have studied over the years covering VA/SC/NC/AL/GA/TX/MS etc., not a one renders this joyful fellow though one day I may come across such person. I someone does, I would love to see a copy. Hello all, The following is a descendant of William Green Sisson. Thomas Earl Sisson SISSON Thomas Earl Sisson, 79, on July 3, 2007. Beloved husband of 55 years of Elizabeth Brigtsen Sisson, and cherished father of Carol and Sally Sisson. Brother of Doris Rodgers, Howard Sisson and Rita Nuernberger, and the late Carroll Sisson, Theron Sisson and Gloria Sisson Cruce. Also survived by a host of nieces & nephews. Born to Henry and Dora Sisson in Birmingham, AL and a resident of New Orleans since 1948. He was graduated from Phillips High School in Birmingham, and received both a Bachelor's degree and MSW from Tulane University, and worked as a school social worker for the Orleans Parish School Board for many years. He served in the U.S. Navy and later as a Major in the U.S. Army Reserves. He loved the outdoors, bicycling and traveling, was a member of the Sierra Club and Good Sam Club, and had lifelong interests in photography, music, woodwork and house renovations. He was a charter member of the Community Church Unitarian Universalist. Though recently slowed by Parkinson's disease, he still awoke each day with a sense of wonder, curiosity, adventure and concern for others. He will be sorely missed. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to the memorial service Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at 12 noon, at Salem Church, 4212 Camp St. (corner Milan). Hi-- This was my Uncle Tom whom I have not seen for probably 50 years or more. I am the son of his brother, Theron, who died in WWII. Thank you for the posting. --William Theron (Sisson) Yates JRice79761@aol.com wrote: > Hello all, > > The following is a descendant of William Green Sisson. > > Thomas Earl Sisson SISSON Thomas Earl Sisson, 79, on July 3, 2007. > Beloved husband of 55 years of Elizabeth Brigtsen Sisson, and cherished father > of Carol and Sally Sisson. The obit I mentioned is for George Wing Sisson Junior. Larry L. Sisson
For some reason, the first link in the previous post is not letting me in. You can still find it thru the 2nd link with a little effort. There is a link about 2 thirds of the way down. You will also see a couple of pictures of Sisson endevours and and obit for George Wing Sisson. The obit is very hard to read. The last link, I mis typed. there should be a / between com and ny. It should look like this .... com/ny and not comny. Anyway, it is a very interesting site, and would be considered a great site if you are a descendant of George Wing Sisson. Larry L. Sisson Larry L. I found a nice site that has lots of info on George Wing Sisson and his family. It may be some new info for someone. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hubbard/nny_index/sisson.html http://northcountry.bobsterner.com/potsdam%20town%20photos.htm http://history.rays-place.com/ny/im/potsdam-gwsisson.jpg http://rays-place.comny/potsdam-1-ny.htm It has a nice picture of him, his house, and three company's that he owned or was associated with. Hi Carol, I received the Mayflower Quarterly that I won on Ebay. The article that we were interested in was written by none other that David S. Martin in 1996. That name should be familiar to many on the Sisson List. There were some other interesting articles. I will mail it to you in the next couple of days. Larry L. Sisson
Hi Robert, That was all the info that it listed. All I checked was for Sisson. If you would like me to check any other names, I would be happy to do it. Larry L. Hi Sharon, I wondered about that one, but I typed it the way it was listed. Larry L. Sisson Sharon Miller <Shamiller3@verizon.net> wrote: There is a mistake on the Virginia references also. Mary's name was given to her as Sisson, but it is arguably not. She wrote in her gift giving to her son, Nicholas, "my brother and sister, Daniel and Jane Sisson/Lisson" and the name has since been hers. But we don't know who was the brother or sister. (7-20-1677) I would presume that Nichols was mentioning her son. It's easy to make mistakes like that, especially if you don't have lots of references to guide you. There is a mistake on the Virginia references also. But it is a common one, and it's repeated over and over. Page 66, Wicklidde, David (c 1636/40- 1708) MD.; M. Mary (Nichols) Sisson. Landowner. I am not sure what to make of that reference. It seems to me that if Richard had been Secretary of the Colony of Massachusetts, that somewhere that Mary's maiden name would have been mentioned. Also, if he had held that tiltle, it seems strange that he would have chosed to live where he did. Anyway it was interesting, I am just not sure if it is acurate. Larry L. Sisson
