Thanks, David, for mentioning the Sisson Gathering in June 2008! I would like to remind everyone again, this will take place June 26-28, 2008, in Springfield, Illinois. This gathering is for anyone interested in researching their Sisson/s lines, whether recent or distant. For more information about the hotel arrangements and the program, please go to: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~dasisson/gathering2008.htm This page includes a link to the pdf registration form, which can be printed, filled out, and mailed as instructed on the form. The registration form should be submitted by June 9, 2008, in order to have a count for the meals. Please note that hotel reservations need to be made by each participant individually, and the deadline for their special rate is May 15, 2008. Even if you can't come for the entire time, please come Saturday, June 28, as most of the group activities will take place that day. Bring your stories and interesting artifacts to share, and your questions and research puzzles. Hope to see you there! Carol Sisson Regehr Sisson-L list mom -- cregehr@phys.ksu.edu
Hello, Maggie. I am glad to see another Sisson researcher working away. I'm not glad about the seeming block to your research, just glad about your work. It's good to have friends in the search. For the past 7 years or so, research by professional genealogists has tried to find the origins of Sisson immigrants to North America in British records. We often know about the records immigrant Sissons left in the New World, but are stymied when we find persons of the same name in the right time in Britain. We know, for example, the names of the progenitors of three Sisson kindreds in North America - Robert Sisson of Virginia, Richard Sisson of New England, and Thomas Sisson of Virginia. We don't know where they came from in England, though we do know approximately when they must have left for America. You have the jump on many of us there; at least you know when and where your Englishman was born. Many of us envy you that. So the short answer to your request for help is this - stick with us. I see you are a subscriber to the Rootsweb Sisson email list. That will give you as good an insight into Sisson research as is currently available. Two further suggestions - - There will be a Sisson Gathering, in Springfield, Illinois, in late June. Conversations with other Sissons and presentations by those who have been researching Sisson origins may give you a sense of "how-to." - The Sisson DNA Project might be able to point you (and other researchers) toward a relationship between your Robert Sisson (b.1740) and someone else whose descendants have already become participants in the Project. You have probably already discovered the Sisson Genealogy Site at Rootsweb. If not, it is worth exploring extensively. See http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~dasisson/. Information about the Gathering and about the Project is available on the home page there. Here's to you and your research: Good luck! Janice: Thank you! If I am reading the census correctly there was a Giles Sisson, in Otsego Co., in 1800 - age 16 to 26, and a female the same age. Then there was also one male and female 45 (& over?). Probably the parents of one of them. Even if that was a Giles too, that would be getting pretty old for the militia. I believe this is probably Giles the son of John, Sr., who was allegedly 25 years of age, at that time. He was most likely the one named in the Militia document. As Carol said I believe Giles Sisson(4) was probably dead by then, or at least too old for the militia. Thank you ever so much. I believe I will send a copy of this to the Sisson List, so others can see what we are finding out. Mary Jo
I find a Giles SISSON in the 1800 Unadilla, Otsego, NY census.? In the household there?are 3 males, one at 0-10, another 16-26, and the third at 45 or older.? There are also 3 females in same categories....one at 0-10, one 16-26, and one 45 or older.? I'm not sure if this helps.? Regards,? Hi Mary Jo & All Sissons related to this, I am re-posting this email as I just noticed, I had just replied to Mary Jo only and I want all on the list to view this, in case anyone sees anything of even the smallest detail they recognize.. Sorry if any one gets duplicates. Please bear with my story of what little I know about my Sissons.. /Hi Mary Jo ~ I have been watching this thread closely because I am still hoping to connect my gggg grandmother, Sarah Sisson of Butternuts to a Giles Sisson in Otsego Co. Sarah Sisson, who was known to be Mrs Sarah (Sisson ) Forrester or Deforest,//(according to her tombstone in Riverside Cemetery, d March 7, 1843, @ at age// 73) who m. my 4th g Thomas Sergeant abt 1800. This is according to a book written by Ambrosia Sergeant Wait, (Thomas'& Sarah's grand daughter in 1900) Sarah Sisson was said to be a widow, when she married Thomas Sergeant(Sargent). Her father was named as Giles, and he was said to have traveled and settled in the Butternuts area of Otsego Co. He reportedly traveled with Thomas Sergeant and his wife Sarah Sisson. Thomas and Sarah's 2nd born son, James Sargent (my ggg) named his first son Giles Sargent. There has been little documented on her line. I knew Thomas and Sarah married in Schoharie Co abt 1800 by a Rev Newcomb/Newcome. I never can find any trace of them there, but just today, I was entering different names and I found a Widow Forrester living with two small children under 16. I indexed the 1790 for a Forrester and a John Forrester came up in the North Ward in NYC(near CT) John Forrester does not show up in 1800 anywhere. Is it possible the Sissons traveled through CT on their way to NY? there was no Forrester in NY but this Widow Forrester in Schoharie which I do believe is my Sarah Sisson Forrester. Her two children were Sally who married Dr William Jacox of Butternuts, and John Deforest b. 1790 living with his sister Betsy Sargent in the NYS census of 1860 and 1870 and says he was widowed twice. So which Sisson did my Sarah belong to? Many of the Sargent men have the middle names of ARNOLD. Anyway, here is the census below of 1800 of Sisson in Otsego Co., NY,. I did a soundex search but I have noticed that sometimes the search engine does not always catch everyone so people need to watch that. I hope this is legal to post to the group, after all it is a vital record, and I am naming the source. 1800 United States Federal Census Thursday, February 28, 2008 1:06:12 AM Name Residence (City,County,State) Saml Sisson Milford, Otsego, NY 1800 William Susan Pittsfield, Otsego, NY 1800 Arnold Sipon [Arnold Sisson] Unadilla, Otsego, NY 1800 Giles Sisson Unadilla, Otsego, NY 1800 John Sisson Unadilla, Otsego, NY 1800 John Sisson Unadilla, Otsego, NY 1800 Wilson Sisson Unadilla, Otsego, NY 1800 Source Information: Ancestry.com. 1800 United States Federal Census [database on-line]. Thanks for the list of Gileses, David. I agree with Mary Jo that Giles(4) was highly likely not the one who was named Lieutenant due to his age at the time, if he was even still living by then. Thanks, Mary Jo for mentioning Wikipedia in your last inquiry. I looked up the Sisson name under history and there are lots and lots of very interesting references. It's a great way to spend some time looking for past and present Sissons. Bet you didn't know that Vera Sisson played in a movie with Rudolph Valentino in 1918! There are also several important references to the role of Sissons in English History that are very worth reading. Martha **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. Military Minutes of the Council of Appointments, of the State of New York, page 532 1783-1821 1800 "His Excellency the Commander-in chief, on the report and recommendation of the Adjutant General, having thought it proper to form a new company in the said regiment (Otsego Co. Militia), Resolved that Levi Austin be and he is hereby appointed the Captain; Giles Sisson, the Lieutenant, Elijah Place the Ensign of the said Company." I checked to see if this could be Giles Sisson(4). Giles himself did not have a son Giles, but John Sisson(5) had a son Giles, born in 1775. If the first child of Giles(4) was born in 1747, Giles would probably have been abt. age 20. His ninth child is the last one I have an alleged birth date for, which was 1770. It would seem that Giles(4) was probably too old to be appointed in 1800. But he was of Otsego County. The only other one would have been Giles(6), son of John, Sr.(5), who would have been approximately 25 years of age. This is a very important vital record, and I was surprised to find it. Please give me your thoughts on this, as to which Giles you think it probably was. Mary Jo
I have been searching records for Giles Sisson(4). Unconfirmed records say that his 11th child, Sylvester was born in Arnal, Otsego Co., New York. The record goes on to say that Sylvester died in Unadilla about 1852. My question is: Where is Arnal? I have searched diligently in all the Otsego County records, and there are many of them, and there is no Arnal listed, in towns, villages, etc. I thought that perhaps by locating where Giles was living at the time his tenth child was born I would come nearer having a better time line on Giles. I am beginning to think this Arnal business is incorrect. Even Wikipedia doesn't have it. Please help. Mary Jo
I should have quoted the source for the Lewis Sisson information, it is as follows: Reference Indianapolis Times April 21, 1945 Missing in Action Page 3, Column 1 and 8
I recently saw this record contained in a query. When I responded I received the following information. Since this Sisson died a hero, I think he should be recorded in our Sisson records. A sad ending for a brave young man. Since he was a Sisson from Indiana, he may have belonged to one of our Indiana Sisson families. Mary Jo Lewis L. Sisson Captain United States Army Air Corps 58th Fighter Squadron, 33rd Fighter Group Service Number O-355012 West Lafayette - Tippecanoe County - Indiana DOD - March 21, 1945 He is missing or buried at sea. His name is honored on the "Tablets of the Missing" at Manila American Cemetery - Philippines Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart
Mary Jo, I was there last June but the church was locked and we did not have much time. The cemetary was is poor condition and I didn't see any signs of Sissons outside the church. You may already know but some of the church records are at the regional information center at Doncaster a few miles away. Some of those are accessable on line.
