Sharpe including tract of Henry Straders imporovement. The warrant was never issued and the land is now in Alamance Co. With Powell being a very uncommon name I think with him using it as early as 1785 it may be a bit of proof for ya'll applying to join DAR or SAR. I'll get back to this when I can. When I helped on the Hillis Rev War soldier I searched Tn counties and happened on Marshall Co where a photo was taken of a memorial stone. Listed were names of Rev War soldiers who died or once lived in the county, it was the last piece we needed, so I got the book and looked him up and used that info also tho his name was spelled Hilles. The book was "Twenty Four Hundred Tennessee Pensioners-Revolution War of 1812" by Zella Armstrong. His story is incredible as it was kept by the family and after the war he had a fight with a man that poked his eyes out so Hillis lived blind after the war. Other people had researched him so we connected by using that as reference. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If we could prove Powell Sinks Sr is the same Paul Sink of Rev War then we could start joining DAR. I helped one relative join but not on the Sinks name. We have to have marriage rocords on parents, grandparents, etc and same for death records and census records. I think the land record of the fifty acreas Powell Sr bought in Tn is probably recorded in North Carolina and he probably married in Pittsylivania Co. Va. tho I can't find it and the marriage record isn't as important as the death record; 1826 Dickson Co Tn. The fifty acres should be listed as bounty land somewhere and when he died Zach bought it. I think Zach had to be age 21 to buy land and was his son, then one of Zachs brothers had to have a son name Zach as two of them about the same age are related. (The third Zach went to Stoddard Co Mo. and had fought in Civil War) The 1850 census for Powell Sinks Jr may! be in Mo, and 1860 he was in Stoddard Co and Wayne Co Mo at time of Civil War tho I have no census record of him. Then 1870 St. Genevieve Co Mo. According to recent post by one of you he was still living as of 1876 but in Madison Co Mo. I recoken working in the timber industry because thats what a bunch of Sinks did. It looks like he died before 1880. When we find his obit it hopefully will mention he was the son of a Rev War vet, if he indeed was. Yeah I believe Powell Jr was married to Elizabeth Lile and they divorced. The reason I say that is it was told to me that if women divorced some of them didn't remarry. Some women believed in intimate contact with only one man, it was a personal belive not a religious teaching. But if widowed they usally had to marry pretty fast for the kids sake. Elizabeth didn't have to remarry as she had kids old enough to take care of her. I'll get back to this as soon as I can. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am researching Powell Sinks. Powell was married to an Elizabeth and I assume from the Geo W bio it is Elizabeth Lyle. I know they moved to Illinois and filed for divorce sometime in the 1840s. Elizabeth is in the 1850 census with Geo W and two other siblings William & Harriet. I assume all other children of Powell & Elizabeth were off on their own or married, but hope to find out more about them. The 1840 census shows a lot of people in the household! Powell was in Illinois before 1840 because only the son William has a TN birthplace per that 1850 census. Powell moved around apparently. I can not find him in 1850 or 1860, yet but in 1870 he is in MO, and was still in MO in 1876 per the MO State census posted here on ancestry.com. I'm trembling! I think the transcribers could not read the last name so they just left it out - who knows?!! Anyway - search for James Wilbanks. He is the guy right above Powell. Powell's household is full of people! I also found reference to Powell and his wife Elizabeth filing for divorce - two times. Nov 1844 and May 1851. Must be Elizabeth Lyle. In 1850 in Jefferson Co Elizabeth is listed as head of household with her children William (16), George W (13) and Harriet (10). William was born in Tennessee and the other two were born in Illinois. So, Powell and Elizabeth would have been in Tenn in the early 1830s. Eliabeth bought her own land in 1853 - there's a land record. Hopefully more later - I'm still trying to work through the notes I've made today. Andrea Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Ar403 Surnames: Decocq, Sinks, Collins, Planchon, Brendlinger Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.sinks/133.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi: Your Julia seems to be quite a mystery. Unfortunately, she died young and the 1890 census is not available so we can't see what she would have put on a census herself - as far as parents place of birth, or even her own place of birth to confirm the Woodville, KY on her tombstone. I have been looking for certain "Sinks" in Missouri and if I come across anything on Julia I will post it here. When searching for "Sinks" keep in mind it is one of those names that occasionally is transcribed incorrectly (Finks, Links, Sinko, Sinke) or may have been written down wrong by the census taker - spelling it like it may have been pronounced (Cinks, Cinques, Zinks .) Be creative when you search. Nothing would surprise me. Since so little is apparently available on line about Julia, I guess I'd try to find out all I can on her children - and maybe see if something on the Collins family turns up. Maybe their vital records might hold a tiny tidbit of information that might lead you to more on Julia. I assume you descend through Julia's son Benjamin Henry Decocq and you probably have a lot of information on him. I noticed the CA death record on Ancestry noted his mother's maiden name as Collins. I see that Julia's daughter Jennie married Roy Brendlinger (Oatis LeRoy Brendlinger) on 12 Jun 1912. That record seems to have been scanned into Ancestry and it doesn't list any info on the parents. They had at least two sons (one of whom, Ralph, sadly died as a POW in WW2) then divorced and she married Earnest Planchon. She died in 1966 and is buried with Earnest at the Waldensian Cemetary in Barry Co. I would think her death certificate might be available and maybe would list more on her mother. M! aybe there is something on the Planchon marriage - if there is a vital record available for that. I don't think the census records for Ben henry or jennie ever indicate that Kentucky was their mother's birthplace but they just might not have known really. I think it either gives Missouri or United States for mother's birthplace. I think the missing information for your Julia - like for the Powell Sinks I am looking for - isn't on line (yet anyway) and the answer probably lies in some dusty old book somewhere. I would check with the Barry and Jasper County Clerks to see if they have any ideas. And I think there may be genealogical societies in those counties that may have access to books and records we can't get online. Probably is nothing - but I did notice that there was a Jennie Collins in Barry County about the same time. Since Julia named a daughter Jennie it stood out (even though there were probably lots of Jennies at that time and lots of Collins.) I first noticed a marriage record for a Jennie Collins in Barry CO. Then noticed a Jennie Collins living with her parents Henry and Nancy (Hubbard) Collins in Fields Creek, Henry, MO in 1880 and what is kind of interesting is that a Sinks family seems to be living just a few doors down from them (George and Mildred Sinks) but neither family lists a Julia. There is another Jennie Collins in the 1880 census in Flat Creek, Barry, MO as a servant in the household of JL Williams, showing her born in 1867, born in IL, parents born in IL and Ohio (at only 13!) and I think yet another Jennie was in Johnson, MO. I don't see any other connection at the surface but maybe there still might be a connection between the Collins and Sinks family in th! at 1880 census. Also noted: there was a Julia Sinko (I think that is a transcription error and should be Sinks) in Blue Cane Arkansas in 1880 - born 1871 (parents were Charles and Sarah Sinks). Charles and Sarah Sinks (and Julia - under age 10) were in Missouri for the 1876 State census. I think it is under "Sinke" though if you want to search for it. Also, there was Sinks (Henry & Catherine) family in Kentucky in 1870 but Julia wasn't born quite yet so it's hard to say if there could be a connection. I wasn't able to find much else about that family later in other census records so makes me wonder if something happened to them (but I didn't search that hard so maybe there is more out there.) Your Decocq family is very interesting and fairly well "findable" in on-line records. I even found Benjamin Decocq's 1898 obituary. I would imagine you already have a lot on that side of the family. If only there was an obituary for Julia Decocq. Good luck to you! I hope you find out about your Julia. (Jennie and Earnest Planchon tombstone is at www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetary/waldensian/waldensian-3.htm) Benjamin Decocq obituary in the Carthage Evening News March 14,1898 is at: www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/obits/d/decocqBenjamin.htm Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
