    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: LaylaCries Surnames: Sinks, Taylor Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.sinks/154/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Alamo defenders list has three brothers killed, the sons of Anson and Elizabeth (Maley) Taylor of Tn.; Edward, James, and George who went to pick cotton in Texas to make some money. They joined the Army of the Republic of Texas under Col. William Travis. They were killed in the Alamo battle March 6, 1836. note; I took a list of all defenders to someone in the 1960s and told him I read that it was not confirmed if the Taylors died in the Alamo or a few days later in the battle of Goliad. He said it needed corrected because Anson Taylor knew his sons' death was in the Alamo with Col. Travis. He wrote the Alamo in the 1960s and informed them and added they needed to make a notation about that. Their reply was that they made a notation of the information. I lost the marriage record of Anson Taylor so I don't have the Tn. county of marriage to do some research. They were related to the Sinks of early Hamilton Co. Ill. but at the time of the Alamo may not have been kin yet but possibly not until after Sinks and Taylors got to Illinois and were then related by marriage. There was a William Taylor killed at the Alamo too. Some of those others killed connected to early St. Louis including Jacob Darst. Taylor Co. Texas is listed as named after them at wiki. I sent email to the county to ask if it was correct info. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Ar403 Surnames: Sinks, Hart Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.sinks/149.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Maureen's line is the same line I am researching - Powell Sinks through his son Peter who was born in 1855 in Illinois. I have seen this 1880 census and am not sure if it is our Peter even though he is about the right age, in the right place and is surrounded by the Harts. Peter married Ruth Hart and so I don't know who Sarah would be. Our Peter's father Powell was born in VA so the TN birthplace doesn't match (however, those birthplaces can occasionally be misstated.) It is possible this is the same Peter but these differences would need some explanation before I would call it a sure thing. The Harts and the Sinks are linked several times. Peter married Ruth Hart and two other brothers married two other Hart sisters. So, when I see Harts and Sinks together I tend to think they belong somehow to our line. Catharine Mitchum 1857 Jersey Co Ill They were on the 1850 and 1860 census, maybe the year of marriage is wrong; or they remarried, he was born 1799/80 unk state. She was born Tn. I don't think Elizabeth moved although I seem to recall the county may have changed names (will have to go back and look)because if you look at a few pages of 1850 census she is on you'll see that many of the neighbors names are the same as they were in the 1840 census when Powell was still in the picture. I don't know what happened to the son William and wonder if he died in the war or even before. George is fairly well documented and I did find a marriage record for a Harriett. I'm sure Powell and Elizabeth had many other children but they probably were off married or living on their own by that 1850 census. It's too bad earlier censuses didn't list out the family members - that would make this research a whole lot easier! Thanks again for your great posts - you are on a roll!
