On several trips to the Virginia State Archives in Richmond, VA, my husband and I went through numerous (original) personal property tax books for Franklin Co VA and recorded all Sink listings. There were two books for each tax year - a "Book A" and a "Book B". We checked both books and never found a listing for Sink in the Book A's. A Box which contained books for 1786-1794, yielded the following results. After each name is a series of five numbers, followed by three numbers. They represent: white males 16 & over, blacks over 16, blacks under 16, horses, stud horses (the next three numbers represent the amount of tax paid - pounds, shillings, pence) 1791 - No Sink listing 1792 - May 7, Sink Abraham 1,0,0,1,0 0,0,6 July 19, Sink Peter 1,0,0,1,0 0,0,6 1793 - March 18, Sink, Stephen 1,0,0,1,0 June 25, Sink, Abraham 1,0,0,1,0 1794 - Apr 7, Sink, Stephen 1,0,0,1,0 0,0,4 Apr 12, Sink, Abraham 1,0,0,1,0 0,0,4 A Box which contained books for 1795-1801 1795 - Mrch 24, Sink, Stephen 1,0,0,1 0,0,4 Apr 6, Sink, Abraham 1,0,0,1 0,0,4 1796 - Apr 18, Sink, Stephen 1,0,0,1,0 0,0,4 Apr 30, Sink, Abraham 1,0,0,2,0 0,0,8 1797 - Mrch 17, Sink, Stephen 1,0,0,2 Sink, Abraham 1,0,0,2 1798 - Mrch 10, Sink, Stephen 2,0,0,2 May 19, Sink, Abraham 1,0,0,3 1799 - Mrch 14, Sink Stephen 2,0,0,3 Apr 12, Sink, Abraham 1,0,0,1 1800 - Aprl 7, Sink, Abraham 1,0,0,2 May 5, Sink, Stephen 3,0,0,2 1801 - Apr 6, Sink, Abram 1,0,0,3 July 18, Sink, Paul, 1,0,0,1 Aug 3, Sink, Stephen 3,0,0,2 For the rest of the books, after the name is White Tithes, & Horses 1802 - Sink, Abraham 1, 1 Stephen 3, 3 1804 - Sink Stephen 1, 2 Abraham 1, 1 Henry 1, 2 1805 - Sink, Abraham 1, 3 Henry 1, 2 Stephen 1, 1 1806 - Sink, Stephen 1, 1, Abraham 2, 3 Henry 1, 2 David 1, 1 1807 - Sink, Abraham 2, 2 Stephen 1, 1 Henry 1, 2 David 1, 1 1809 - Sink, David 1, 2 Henry 1, 2 Stephen 2, 2 Abraham 3, 4 1810 - Sink, Stephen 1, 1 David 2, 3 Henry 1, 2 Abraham 3, 4 1811 - Sink, Stephen 1, 1 David 3, 2 Henry 1, 2 Daniel 1, 1 Abraham 3, 4 1812 - Sink, Abraham 1, 3 Henry 1, 1 Abraham J 1, 1 David 3, 2 Daniel 1, 1 Henry 1, 3 Stephen 1, 1 1813 - Sink, David 1, 3 Daniel 1, 2 Abraham 1, 2 Henry 1, 1 Abraham J 1, 1 Henry step-son 1, 1 Stephen 1, 1 Abraham 1, 0 1814 - Sink, Daniel 1, 1 David 1, 3 Stephen 1, 1 Abraham Jr. 1, 3 Henry (stepson) 1, 1 Abraham Sun? 1, 1 Henry 1, 1 1815 - Sink, Stephen 1, 1 David 1, 4 Daniel 1, 3 Abraham S. 1, 2 Henry 1, 2 Abraham J 1, 0 Henry (s son) 1, 2 1816 - Sink, Henry 1, 2 Stephen 1, 1 Abraham 2, 2 Henry 1, 2 Daniel 1, 1 David 2, 2 Abraham 1, Peter 1, 1817 - Sink, Peter 1, David 2, 1 Daniel 1, 2 Stephen 1, 1 Henry (A'son) 1, 1 Abraham 2, 2 Henry (S'son) 1, 1 And that is as far as we got. Dear JoAnne, Thanks for the reply. I am a descendent of Peter SINKS who married Susannah BECKNER, Franklin County, Virginia, 1816. I think , but have not proved, that he is the son of Paul-Powell SINK-ZINK of North Carolina and Pittsylvania County. Virginia. I think this is the same Powell SINK who died in Dickson County, Tennessee, 1826. Powell SINKS had a son named Zachariah. Peter also had a son named Zachariah. Peter also had a son named Jesse. Peter SINKS died Oct. 20, Hamilton County, Illinois. His son Zachariah died in Missouri. Peter SINKS daughter, Susan SINKS [My GGGrandmother] was married 3 times. Her first husband was Jesse SINKS [cousin?] He was listed on the 1850 Jefferson Co. Illinois Census as being born in Tennessee. Her 2nd husband was Johnson B. HILLMAN, married April 13, 1854, Hamilton County, Illinois.[This was my GGGrandfather. I would appreciate any records you could send on this family. Richard, I don't find a Jesse in my database. If we can find the parents and uncles of "Drewry" maybe we can solve the problem. Maybe "Drewry" had an Uncle Powell for whom he named his son. I don't think it is a very common name. Maybe there was a Powell surname in the family. Food for thought. Maybe someone has already found "Drewry's" parents and will be so kind to share them with us. He was a Veteran of the War Of 1812, from Tennessee. He had a son named William R. SINKS. There was a Drewry SINKS that also might have been his son. Does anyone know if Jesse SINKS had any connection with Powell SINKS, who died in Dickson County, Tennessee, in 1826? ------------------------------------ Richard A.
