See, my problems are that according to the age on his death certificate - he was born between 29 March 1850 and 28 March 1851. Also, his death certificate states he was born in Yorkshire, England. Unless the death certificate is incorrect, I do not know whether this is the right family for my Jasper. The birth certificate I have for a Jasper SIMPKINS says his parents were Allen and Anne, so the census details you sent me are for them. I am just not sure if I have the right family for my Jasper. So thankyou for this information, I needto do more digging (and ripping my hair out) before I can be certain of anything.
Simpkins Researchers, The earliest Simpkins ancestor that I have is Nathan SIMPKINS, who was born around 1822 in what may have been Monroe Township, Knox County, Ohio. Nathan married Rachel S. IRELAND (b. abt 1818), probably in the early 1840s, and they had the following children: * Milton Mills SIMPKINS, b. 7 Feb 1844 * Stiles T. SIMPKINS, b. 8 Feb 1846 * Nancy J. SIMPKINS, b. abt 1848 * Mary Ellen SIMPKINS, b. 3 Aug 1851 * Nathan A. SIMPKINS, b. 1853?, d. 12 Jul 1863 * Sarah J. SIMPKINS, b. 1856?, d. 8 Jul 1863 Nathan was a carpenter and shingle-maker. On 20 Jul 1861, Nathan enlisted as a private in Company C of the 32nd Ohio Infantry. After Nathan contracted and became debilitated with what the captain of the company, James V. Banning, called chronic rheumatism, James worked to have Nathan discharged. However, Nathan was not discharged before many of the other men in the company contracted the same disease. On 6 Dec 1861, Nathan was discharged at Beverly, West Virginia, and returned home to Knox County in very weak condition, suffering from Typhoid Pneumonia. He died on 20 Dec 1861. Documentation: * 1850 Federal Census for Knox County, Ohio * Civil War pension file of Rachel (Ireland) Simpkins If anyone is also researching this branch, I'd be interested in comparing notes. Thanks. Stephen Fox

In Muscatine County there is a cemetery called Kiser in 76 Township near the Louisa County border--its overgrown and in horrible condition and not accessable (on private property) but recently we DID get someone in there and get a few photos (I'm going to try again in a couple weeks when I go up there. At any rate, after seeing the markers that were photographed, I have "deduced" that the "Annie" Simpkins listed in the WPA cemetery records is not "Annie" but is Ananias Simpkins b 16 Feb 1814 in Greene County, PA d 26 Feb 1863 in Louisa Co; m1 21 OCT 1838 in Shelby Co IN; Mahala J Stoddard (d 1857 bur this cemetery) m2 16 Jul 1857 Louisa Co IA Eliza Jane Reynolds 2 children by 2nd wife were Lewis E and Harriet Minerva. I don't know how many children he had with Mahala but we found markers for two - Benjamin Scott Simpkins and William Simpkins. 1850 Federal Census family resided in Grandview Twp Louisa IA Mahala at that time was listed as age 29 b NC; children listed with the family at that time were Mary E (10) Nancy (8) Elizabeth D (5) and Benjamin S (B. Scott buried this cemetery). All these children were born in IA. There is also an 18y old Charity C Stoddard b PA listed with the family. WPA listed B. Scott Simpkins as dying in 1853 died age 15y 8m 3d son of Ananais & Mahala J per WPA (incorrect)- the photo of his marker shows d age 3y 8m 3d - this appears to be correct based upon the 1850 Federal Census listing him as Benjamin S age 5/12y of age. son Wm died 03 Mar or May 1847 age not known. Also a possibility that the Eliza Simpkins married to Bowley COULD be the Widow Simpkins (2nd wife of Ananias) but don't know. I'd like to figure it out so I can work on the cemetery some more. Just passing this info on because you mentioned Ananias s/o Middleton was born in 1814 and so apparently was this one. Greetings! I am researching ancestors who were enslaved in Edgefield and Abbeville Counties in SC. 1. Maria __?__ was born in 1810 in Edgefield Co, SC?. She was identified in will inventories in 1826 & 1832 in Edgefield Co, SC. She was bequeathed to Maria E. Simkins in 1832 in Edgefield Co, SC. I am not sure if all of her children would have selected the SIMPKINS surname at emancipation as I'm not sure who might have owned all of them between 1832 and emancipation. Some, including my great-grandfather, Edmond, her youngest known son, was on the Millwood Plantation of James Edward Calhoun in Abbeville Co, SC after he and Maria Simkins married in 1839. So, we're talking possibly unscalable brick walls. BUT, I'm always hoping for more information on the period of enslavement and especially hoping to link with lost relatives. Maria had the following children: 2 i. Paul __?__ was born about 1825 in Edgefield Co, SC?. 3 ii. Mitchell __?__ was born about 1827 in Edgefield Co, SC?. +4 iii. Emmeline __?__ b. ca. 1831. She had a daughter Sally / Sarah. She later m. Henry GARY and they had a son, Alex b. ca 1865. 5 iv. Susan __?__ was born before 1832. (She was crossed out on the inventory. Did she die? Was she sold?) +6 v. William Simpkins b. ca 1833 m. Leah __?__. 2 Daughters: Lucia m. Brown BRYANT and Julie or Mariah. 7 vi. George Simpkins was born about 1835 in Edgefield Co, SC?. +8 vii. Edmond Simpkins b. ca 1838 had children with 1) Elloise __?__; 2) Clore IRVIN (my line) and 3) married Frances McBRIDE. Please drop a line if you have any possible connections or information!
