Hello all, This mailing list receives posts that are forwarded from the companion Message Board. This is called the gateway. Because of the new board system that is now in place those posts now arrive to the mailing list using the gateway address. The proper course of action has always been to click the link in the gateway post and reply on the board but now that method of replying will become mandatory as there is no way to reply via email to the board poster--any replies you wish to make MUST be posted on the board. Replying to only the LIST will NOT reach the board poster and clicking REPLY to the gateway post will result in the gateway address bouncing as it is not a valid address for receiving mail. You will recognize posts coming from the message boards by the address gc-gateway and they also contain the statement: This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Below this statement there is a link which will take you to the message board where you can post your reply. Any questions or comments please direct them off the list to jasche45133@gmail.com Sincerely, Joan Asche Admin

By 1881, James and Emma are now married. We are trying to locate a Henry Simpkins, which should be the son of rachel and James, but cannot locate him in any record. Any leads or connections?

Several death certificates that I've researched in Shelby County, including his death certificate, possible appear to be children of John G. (or B.) Simpson & Mary L. Lee. They were in the 1870 & 1880 Dyer County Tennessee Census. If this information appears to be familiar, please contact me. Thanks!

Hi Bonnie, My African American SIMPKINS line does not go back as far as yours, but I know of one SIMKINS family that held enslaved people out of Edgefield Co, SC. I estimate the birth of our oldest known maternal ancestor, Maria, at ca 1810 as her first son was born ca 1825. I don't know what surname she or her first 4 presumed children used: Paul, Mitchell, Emmaline, & Susan. The last 3 known children (b. ca 1833 - 1838) did take the SIMPKINS surname: William, George, and Edmond (my great-grandfather - this line of mine averages about 41 years / generation). The slaveholding family came out of Virginia into Edgefield, SC, starting with Arthur (b. 1742 VA - d. 1826 SC). Numerous members of his family left will inventories identifying enslaved people by first names, and often in family groups. His son, Eldred had a daughter, Maria, who married James Edward Calhoun in 1839 Abbeville Co, SC. Calhoun's Millwood Plantation AKA today as the "Estate Lands" was flooded when the Russell Dam was built on the Savannah River. A multidisciplinary team researched & published info on Millwood (including an interview with my Aunt b. 1892). My Dad, the baby, was born to sharecropping parents who were still living on the "Estate Lands" in 1918. I only have a little information on Arthur's family, but at least VA gets you a bit farther north from SC with one known slave holding family. Perhaps someone on the list has the genealogical research to assist you. From what I've gathered, Arthur's parents were William Simkins and Sabra Roberts. He also had two brothers, Covington and William. Best of luck with your research! Sonia
Hi Bill: I had a look at your web page. Bill, have you ever come across a Simpkins family who owned Slaves in the US? We have a Benjamin Simpkins who was born c.1790 somewhere in the States. He entered Canada maybe around 1800 or so. We cannot find out where he was born and/or who his parents were. He was Black. If anything comes to mind, please contact me. Hello all, As you probably already know the mailing lists are being moved to a new list management system. This list is scheduled the week of Sept. 10th. For the exact schedule schedule and additional information see: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html. Please note that this schedule is subject to change. A couple of things you need to know: 1. Subscribers who subscribe in both the list and digest modes using the same email address will no longer be able to do so. You may still subscribe to both but you will need to use two email address. You can always use a free Internet account such as hotmail, yahoo or gmail. 2. You should be aware that you may need to adjust your spam filters. Officially from rootsweb: <snip> The "-L" is being dropped from the "official" list name. This means the "from" address your mailing list emails come from will be slightly different- ListName@rootsweb.com vs. the current ListName-L@rootsweb.com. You may have to adjust your spam filters or put the new address on your "accept" list to prevent it from being caught in your "junk" folder. <snip> You will be able to send mail with or without the "-L" Any questions just email me at jasche45133@gmail.com Sincerely, Joan Asche List Admin
