OH Families, by the Monroe County Chapter of the OH Genealogical Society, 1992. Pg. 267 In 1834, John Schoonover arrived in Monroe Co. OH, leading the horse that carried his wife, Mary, and their infant son, William. John purchased land on Possum Creek in present day Lee Twsp. The Schoonover family owned this farm for more than a century. John was born in Lewis Co, WV in 1811 to Henry and Mary Canfield Schoonover. John came from families with deep roots in America. His father Henry was descended from the Schoonoven family which migrated from Utrecht, Holland, in the early 1600's. His mother Mary Canfield, was a descendent of Matthew Canfield of Harlestone, England, who settled in Connecticut at least by 1639. In 1833, John married Mary Shuman in Lewis Co. WV. After the couple moved to Monroe Co. they tended their farm, raised their family and saw 3 sons, Daniel, Jesse, and John, go off to battle in the Civil War. Fortunately, all 3 came home safely. The family attended Mount Olive United Brethren Church and Mount Moriah Methodist Episcopal Church. John was a trustee for Mount Moriah in 1844. Jesse joined Mount Olive in 1862. Daniel and another brother, Ben, were also members of Mount Olive. 9 children were born to John and Mary: William Ellsworth (1833-1917), married Christina porter, Daniel, 1836-1912, Sarah Jane, 1838-1863; Jesse 1841-1937, Nancy Ann 1843-1942, John Cryus, 1846; Mary 1848-1855; James Wesley, 1853, Thomas Benton, 1856-1948; After Mary's death in 1873, John married Elizabeth Mowrey in 1881. John died in 1888. John and Mary are buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Lee Twsp., Monroe Co. OH. Hope this helps a little bit. --part1_0.95a26bf9.25352a66_boundary--
