I am forwarding information on my ggg-grandfather Jacob Shuman (Shewman). I have nothing on a Catherine Shuman but it is possible that there is a connection between the two. My Jacob, as you can see, was born in Botetourt county, VA and came to Preble county, Ohio in 1805 with his father in law Christian Holderman. Don't know if this gives you any help or not. I am the second born of Helen Gertrude Shewman, a fifth generation descendant of Jacob. Marty Descendants of Jacob Shewman, Sr. Generation No. 1 1. JACOB1 SHEWMAN, SR. was born 11 November 1778 in Botetourt County, Virginia, and died 12 May 1840 in Monroe twp, Preble county, Ohio. He married HANNAH HOLDERMAN 10 March 1804 in Botetourt County, Virginia, daughter of CHRISTIAN HOLDERMAN. She was born Cir. 1786 in Franklin County, Virginia, and died 30 January 1860 in Harrison Township, Darke County, Ohio. Notes for JACOB SHEWMAN, SR.: >From the book, "History of Preble County, Ohio." Williams & Bro., Publishers. 1881 Page 275: "Christian Holderman, his son Abraham and son-in-laws, Jacob Shewman and John Koyle, and their families came out from Botetourt county, Virginia, in 1805." (This was in Lanier township.) Page 290 "Jacob Shewman, sr., was born in Botetourt county, Virginia, in 1778. In 1800 he married Hannah Holderman, who was born in Franklin county, Virginia, in 1786. Nine children were born to them, three of whom are living - Jacob, Martin and Susannah. In the early settlement Shewman came to Preble county and settled on Aukerman's creek, in Lanier township. He stayed there three years, and then moved to Gasper township. He had little or no capital when he came to this county, but had accumulated a property of a hundred acres of land before his death, which occured in Monroe township in 1840. His wife died in 1861, in Darke county. Jacob Shewman, jr., was born was born in Gasper township in 1812. In 1837 he married Elizabeth Sayler, born in Gasper in 1820. They have had twelve children, seven of whom survive. Mr. Shewman was township trustee for thirteen years, from 1850 to 1863. Martin Shewman, born in Gasper township in 1817, married, in 1841, Sarah A Cosby. She was born in Hamilton county in 1822. They have had eleven children, five of whom are living. He was township trustee from 1864 to 1877. He now owns and farms one hundred and twenty-three acres in Monroe township."
