Jacob Shuman was the son of Jacob and Margaret Siegfried Shuman, and was born near Calais on October 23, 1839. Thirty three years ago the deceased with his wife located at the late home in Beaver township. The latter, whose name was Miss Cloeann Curry, died February 24, 1912. To this couple were born four children, who survive. These are: S. C. Shuman, superintendent of schools at Fitchville, this state; Miss Mary, at the home; Joseph, residing near by; Oscar, at home. There are seven grand children and four great grand children. Of his brothers and sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Betts, of Batesville, survives. He was a man of many admirable qualities of mind and heart. He was a member of the M. E. church, having been converted at Calais under preaching of Rev. William Danford and was a charter member of the church later organized there. He later attended the church at Wesley Chapel. As a master mechanic the deceased had a wonderful skill. His trade was that of a blacksmith, but he understood the workings of a watch or a traction engine as well. At the church the funeral services were held on Tuesday at ten o'clock, conducted by Rev. Wharton, the pastor, and the interment made there. The pall bearers were the three sons and three grand sons. The friends from a distance who attended the funeral were: William Siegfried, of Cambridge; W. L. Shuman, Chicago Junction (now Willard); Dora Shuman and wife, of Boston; Jesse Lucas and wife, Temperanceville.
