Mustered in 22 Apr 1861, mustered out 2 Aug 61, term expired. [2] Shoemaker, Gideon Service: Mexican War, Private, 4th Regiment, Company A, Grant County. Mustered in 31 May 1847, at Jeffersonville, Indiana, by Captain Gatlin, died 30 Oct 1847. [1] Shoemaker, Jesse Service: Civil War, Private, 47th Regiment, Captain Keller's Company, later Company H. Mustered in 13 Dec 1861 at Indianapolis, Indiana. Re- enlisted a Veteran Volunteer: 15 Dec 1864, at New Iberia, Louisiana. On detached service in the Ambulance Corps from 1 Sep 1862 to his death. Jesse was the son of John Shoemaker and Susannah Shafer. His brothers and sisters were: Andrew; Adam; Solomon; Elizabeth; Susanna; Catherine and Luenos or Suenos. He was born about 1830 in Columbiana County, Ohio. He was married to Elizabeth Rote, 25 Jan 1853, Marion County, Iowa. His children were; Martha; Charles Fremont; Frank and Laura Belle. He died 26 Mar 1865 at Fort Gaines, Dauphin Island, Alabama. The cause of death was the amputation of his right foot following an accident that occurred when he was unloading his ambulance from a steamship onto a rail jetty at Dauphin Island. He was buried 27 Mar 1865, East Point, Dauphin Island, Alabama. Age at death was 34.
