    3. While Martin Shumann (note spelling) did have his children baptized at Ebenezer, that does not mean he lived there. He in fact lived in South Carolina, just across the Savannah River. He had some land on the Black Swamp section. Some of his descendants continued to stay in South Carolina, even after he moved to Georgia, settling in what is now the town of Meldrim, Georgia (Effingham County). It was situated near the Ogeechee River where Black Creek comes into it. Also, counties of Chatham, Effingham, Bryan and what used to be parts of Bulloch, meet at this point. Martin lived almost stone's throw from all of those counties. Some of his grandchildren lived in all of those counties, but still were neighbors. I have been wondering about Purysburg. It was across the Savannah River from Ebenezer and a German settlement. I have found a Martin Shuman in Rowan, N.C. in the 1740's but I do not know if it is our Martin or not. I have searched passenger lists, and can not find when he came to America. I do know his father had an estate in Germany which he left to Martin, as Martin states this in his will. Of course his father could have come to America as well and still have that estate in Germany. Just have to keep digging. I have a neat little deed that shows where the old family property was. Neat because it has a little house drawn on it...very unusual to find old deeds showing where the house was.
