Cousins, I've been so busy since arriving home in mid-August, going to a workshop and then starting school, that I've had little time for more than to read my e-mail and respond to the most pressing things. But I've been wanting to share some thoughts and ideas that are beginning to take shape, regarding John Shuman of Monongalia Co., WV. We need to take a careful look at the information William Shuman provided in mid-July, regarding the Jacobs Lutheran Church baptismal records. as he pointed out, the book in Uniontown, PA appears to be inaccurate, but that provided by the retired Lutheran minister is strikingly close to names we already have. >Anna born 2 April 1794 and bapt 19 Jul 1795 Parents were Johannes Schuman >and Elisabeth sponsers the parents. John and Elizabeth had a "Hannah," but she is generally thought to have been born about 1807. I don't know that anyone has any solid proof for a DOB on her, however. Could she really have been born 12 years earlier than we thought? > Next was Rachael born 1 June 1795 bapt 19 >July 1795, the parents were Johannes and Elisabeth, John and Elizabeth had a Rachel, whose DOB has been given as "about 1793" but again, I don't know that anyone has any solid proof for a date. > next was Joseph born 11 >May 1797 bapt on 30 July 1797 and the parents and sponsers were John Shuman >and Catarina (Catherine) Schuman John and Elizabeth's oldest son was Joseph. Again, no firm date has been established for his birth, although it is often given as "about 1790." It is interesting to note that his wife's DOB is 1798, so 1797 would not be out of line. What is a much bigger problem is the name of the mother, which is given as Catherine. Could the "circuit riding" priest who performed the baptism simply have written the wrong name? > and the last child was Rebecca born 30 >August 1799 and bapt 14 September 1800 the parents were Philip Schuman and >Sophia . This would be consistent with "our" Philip, whose wife is thought to have been Sophia. Unfortunately, we know little if anything else about Rebecca, although judging from the 1810 census, he had a couple of daughters that haven't been identified. > Also in the records was a chikd Thomas Kindel born 27 November 1794 >and the parents were John Kindel and Elizabeth. > There were two or three Kendall families living in close proximity with the Shuman families in Georges Twp. We have other documentation that Samuel and Jeremiah were there. They DID have a brother John, so it's possible that is who is named here. We found that there are records of a John Shuman (sometimes with a "Jr," sometimes with a "Sr") in Georges Township for most of those 10 years from 1789 to 1798. But John is not there in the 1800 census. Then, we find this document in Monongalia Co, WV: >Page 170, 12 October 1802 >James and Hannah WALKER, Fayette Co, PA, to John SHUMAN Jr. 100 acres on >Papaw Creek, no adjoiners named. Patented to James Walker, 2 January 1799. >Consideration: L50, VA. Signed: James Walker, Hannah [K] Walker. >Witnesses: none. Acknowledged in court, October 1802. Del: to John Shuman >Jr, 25 August 1803. Recorded: OS 2:506 and so, we calculate that he and his young family moved south a few miles to the Pawpaw Creek area of Monongalia Co, WV sometime between 1797 and 1802. BUT.... During our visit to WV in July, we found some of the records of Claud C. Kendall, who had lived in Mannington, and who is a SHUMAN descendant through Mary, wife of Samuel Kendall II. Claud C. Kendall states that Samuel Kendall I and his brother Jeremiah had been in the area around Little Dents Run about 1782, but after an Indian raid killed a neighboring family, they withdrew to Fayette Co, PA where Jeremiah remained. But Samuel I returned to the Big Dents Run area, and settled near Rexs Run. He says: Not liking it there [PA] he came back with the John Shuman Family to Big Dents Run, Mannington, and settled... The Shuman Family settled on the head of Drakes Run off of U.S. 250 about 2 miles north of Mannington where they stayed till 1820 when they sold and moved to Ministers Run... On another page, he includes these comments: The Shuman Family settled at the Head of Drake's Run, Mannington, W. Va. and there were enough members in the family (his married sons, etc.) to call it the Shuman settlement as listed in Deed dated Aug. 4, 1820, monongalia Co, W. Va. Bk. 1, Page 258 - James Kendall to Thomas LeMasters... And in a notebook in the Genealogy Room at the Fairmont Library, I found a collection of rough drafts and letters regarding "The Kendalls of Marion County" but I did not find the name of the author. In one of the rough drafts, I found the following passage: He [Samuel I] moved to Dents Run Mannington District now Marion County West Virginia in 1801 with the John Shuman Family who settled on Drakes Run (this was known as the Shuman Settlement) and lived there until 1820, when he moved to Ministers Run... So, what are we to make of this? It certainly appears that there is some basis for placing the John Shuman Family at Drakes Run north of Mannington during the period in which his older children would be looking for spouses. And we know that two of Samuel I's children married John Shuman's children. We also know that the wife of Joseph Shuman was Elizabeth Beaty, whose father owned much of the property along Buffalo Creek (into which the Dents Run creeks flow). It thus seems logical that John could have lived in that area. But what about the PawPaw District property? Why did he purchase it in 1802 if he didn't live there for nearly 20 years? On the other hand, why would these Kendall researchers bring in the John Shuman Family as neighbors and friends if it wer not true? My head is spinning! What do some of the rest of you think about this? Regards! A Permelia has never been named as one of the children of Jacob K. and Permelia Shuman Straight that I have ever seen, but I know I haven't seen it all yet. Perhaps you have her confused with the daughter of Jasper Straight and Mary Kennedy, Permelia Straight who married James Mayfield. This Permelia was born about 1809. Mary Kennedy was the half sister of Jacob K., and Jasper Straight was probably a cousin, but no one has any proof (that I know of) of who Jasper's parents were. Maybe this Permelia Straight Mayfield is your ancestor. Since we are on the subject of Permelia Shuman, you wrote on this date: Date: 10/20/99 12:41:38 PM EST Just a tasty little tid-bit of news. I was playing around with names on the computer trying to find the Permelia Shuman mother Sarah Temple Kendall and I think I found something of interest - the Temple family from New Jersey - head dud was Return Temple moved into Greene County,Pa from there children moved into Monogehelia County area. Good Lead? - Also, possibility Permelia last name was "Wilson" but this is yet to be worked out. Chris Yes, this Temple family sounds interesting to me. I'd like to know more if you find more. Also you wrote on: Subj: Re: [SHUMAN] Permelia Shuman Date: 10/12/99 8:36:37 PM EST From: cbowen@flanet.com (cbowen) Ah, Thank you, thank you, thank you. Do you think that these are the twin girls who were hiding in the briar patch when the Indians killed Jacob Streight = Jacob Kennedy Streight's father. I have a record that twins were born to Mrs. Elizabeth Streight Dragoo - Jacob's sister, and that one of the married a Kennedy. Oh, thank you so much for this information. I can now think a little harder on this matter. Chris Bowen This is confusing to me, I don't think Mrs. Elizabeth Straight Dragoo ever had twins, the only surviving daughter I have for her is Elizabeth Dragoo who married James Hays. The one Straight female that I know of who married a Kennedy was Jacob K.'s mother Elizabeth Straight, widow of Jacob Straight who was killed by an Indian. The girls who were hiding in the briar patch during the massacre were Rebecca Straight and Temperance Straight, and their mother, Elizabeth Straight Kennedy was holding Ann who was the youngest, and the story goes that she was pregnant with Jacob K. at the time of the massacre. So these girls were Jacob K.'s sisters. I really enjoy your enthusiasm, Chris, keep up the good work. Make us all think about our theories. Delores Straight Loganville
Dear Marie: I'm sorry - I found the records in the Frederick County, Maryland but also noted that I had seen in the Monogehelia Deed (WVA - then Virginia) that at least one a John Sueman seems to have shown up but I do not know if Sueman is a misspelling from these books or the actual name. I found in my notes out of Frederick County, Md these two items. John Sueman m. Margaret Snyder 05/14/1791. Peter Sueman m. Anna Templing 06/25/1791. When I was in WVA this summer I noticed in the Monogehelia deed books John Sueman's name but I don't think I wrote down anything from these books just held them to memory. Also, trivia - on the WVwetzelcounty website, newly organized they had pictures of old places in Wetzel County (used to be Tyler), they also have places for bios, queries, deeds, wills and so on. I was looking at a those pictures and saw an old schoolhouse, I knew my mother went to a one room schoolhouse in Wileyville or just outside Wileyville, so I asked her what the name of the schoolhouse that was on the hill that she went to when she was little she told me "Shuman, out on Shuman Road just a little outside of Wileyville" She said they named it Shuman Road because alot of Shuman's lived out there and still do. Just thought that is a matter of interest as my mother is 81 years old. That school however is no longer standing to my knowledge but my mother has shown me where she had to walk up the hill to get to it. Just thought that was of interest. Chris
What state are you talking about? Thanks, Marie
The Shuman school house was located on my family property. Grandparents were Shuman. A few years ago the last sysmbol of the school, a concrete pad where the well was located, was destroyed. Ron Sapp

Chris
CJ: This is a harmless virus - but a nuisance, nothing to worry about. I did not recieve the virus from you at all, in any of your message. I, too had the pesky virus sent to and didn't know - this was last spring. If you do still have the virus your isp will gladly give you a free disk to get rid of it. But I have not seen any signs that you past virus on to me. Dear Elaine Dieteman-Haberland. Our first Shuman was Jacob, He was born in 1819-21 (long delivery??) in Germany (Prussia probably). He died April 14, 1865 in Campbell Army Hospital, Washington DC of wounds sufered in Co I, 188th Reg of NY volunteer Infantry, and was buried at Arlington Nat. Cem. He was married to SARA ANN WEEKS, (b 9 Sept 1833 in Montogmery or Herkimer Co NY). The marriage took place in Dansville (Livingston County) NY 27 Sept 1848. Between 1848 and 1865 they lived in NY Stat. The children were born in Dansville, Avoca, and Wheeler, NY. The Children wer George (1850), MATTHIAS D (1852), CARADON O (1854),ISAAC (1856), FRANKLIN (1858), ALEXANDER (1860), JACOB (1862), AND HELEN ALVIRA (1864). After the War, SARA and her family moved to Wisconsin, although MATTHIAS is listed as having died in Naples NY Aug 31 1925, having married a Mary Jane McNeil on April 15, 1875. Any of this strike a chord??? We have no info on Jacob's parents or kin, althoug Cousin George is pretty certain from the Army records that Jacob came from Prussia. -- Richard L. Dear Elaine: When and Where died Anthony die? Have you checked passenger lists coming into New York? Since he was born in Germany in l858 it is obvious (I guess) that he arrived in New York after 1858. Where did he marry? To everyone on this List, I was not aware of the "Happy 99EXE" worm/virus logo that has been attached to my messages. This is to let you know that I have NOT sent this intentionally. If you will read the following article concerning this worm you will see that the sender is unaware of it being ther until someone tells them. I have again today followed the following instructions to removing this, if the logo is still there please let me know and if you have any other suggestions. I did not say anything to the List because to my knowledge the virus has been wipe clean from me. I am just housewife seeking out her famliy roots, I am not out to harm anyone. I will also forward this to the list, in response to what you have already sent. CJ Aliases: Trojan.Happy99, I-Worm.Happy Likelihood: Common Region Reported: World Wide Characteristics: Trojan Horse, Worm <Picture> Description This is a worm program, NOT a virus. This program has reportedly been received through email spamming and USENET newsgroup posting. The file is usually named HAPPY99.EXE in the email or article attachment. When being executed, the program also opens a window entitled "Happy New Year 1999 !!" showing a firework display to disguise its other actions. The program copies itself as SKA.EXE and extracts a DLL that it carries as SKA.DLL into WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. It also modifies WSOCK32.DLL in WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and copies the original WSOCK32.DLL into WSOCK32.SKA. WSOCK32.DLL handles internet-connectivity in Windows 95 and 98. The modification to WSOCK32.DLL allows the worm routine to be triggered when a connect or send activity is detected. When such online activity occurs, the modified code loads the worm's SKA.DLL. This SKA.DLL creates a new email or a new article with UUENCODED HAPPY99.EXE inserted into the email or article. It then sends this email or posts this article. If WSOCK32.DLL is in use when the worm tries to modify it (i.e. a user is online), the worm adds a registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\RunOnce=SKA.EXE The registry entry loads the worm the next time Windows start. Removing the Worm Manually 1.delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.EXE 2.delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.DLL 3.in WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory, rename WSOCK32.DLL to WSOCK32.BAK 4.in WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory, rename WSOCK32.SKA to WSOCK32.DLL 5.delete the downloaded file, usually named HAPPY99.EXE Windows prevents you to do step #3 and #4 above if the machine is still connected to the Internet. The file "windows\system\wsock32.dll" is used whenever the machine is connected to Internet (i.e. through dial-up or LAN connection). If you are using dial-up connection (i.e. America Online), you need to do the following: 1.terminate internet connection 2.delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.EXE 3.delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.DLL 4.in WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory, rename WSOCK32.DLL to WSOCK32.BAK 5.in WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory, rename WSOCK32.SKA to WSOCK32.DLL 6.delete the downloaded file, usually named HAPPY99.EXE If you are connected to Internet through LAN (i.e. in the office or cable modem), you need to do the following: 1.From the Start menu, select shutdown-restart in MS DOS mode 2.type CD \windows\system when DOS prompt (C:\)appears 3.type RENAME WSOCK32.DLL WSOCK32.BAK 4.type RENAME WSOCK32.SKA WSOCK32.DLL 5.type DEL SKA.EXE 6.type DEL SKA.DLL Safe Computing This worm and other trojan-horse type programs demonstrate the need to practice safe computing. One should not execute any executable-file attachment (EXE, SHS, MS Word or MS Excel file) that comes from an email or a newsgroup article from an untrusted source. <Picture> Norton AntiVirus users can protect themselves from this virus by downloading the current virus definitions either through LiveUpdate or from the following webpage: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html Write-up by: Raul K. I am still searching for connections to the Schuman line. My Schuman's settled in western New York State, first in Buffalo and then shortly thereafter in the Olean/Allegany area. Anton (Anthony) Schuman appears to have come to this country in about 1858. He is reportedly from Bavaria. His death certificate says only that he is from Germany and that his father's name was also Anton. Mother's maiden name is unknown. His obituary states that he is from a town named Louis. I have been unable to confirm that information. He never spoke to his children or grandchildren about his family. He is a mystery to me and the rest of my family who are anxiously waiting for me to uncover additional information. If anyone thinks there is a possibility of a connection please let me know. We don't know if he came here alone or with other family members. Because he never spoke of his family we are unsure if he had brothers and sisters, if parents were alive, etc. Any help in my search would be greatly appreciated. Elaine Dieteman-Haberland
Dear Family, Friends and Foes alike: HURRICANE!!!!!!!!!! i will be temporarily shutting down my system this evening for this temporary commerical break. Bye. Chris Bowen
James, I am one of the many Shuman/Beaty ancesters in NC. Even though you may not have connected these Shumans to our Shuman/Beaty clan, it would be wonderful if you would share with us,too, in lieu of keeping this privately. Please reconsider. Thank you for your understanding. You know how important all this information could be to so many people.
