    1. [SHUMAN] Orphanages
    2. tara13
    3. James, Since you are so knowledgeable, I was wondering if you might know how I could go about finding orphanages in the Mecklenburg County, NC area. My grandma Shuman was reared in one in approximately 1868-1870. I've contacted the library and even they have given me particularly no information. Thanks James. Judi

    3. Chris and Bill, My uncle Raymond Gordon Fetty of Huston Texas is the owner of the Vincent and Rachael Shuman Bible. From a handwritten piece of paper found in the bible(very old with binding stains on it): Lucinda Fetty April 1 1816 Elizabeth Fetty Jan 3 1818 Nancy Fetty 1820 Darcus Fetty Jan 23 1822 Malissa Fetty June 6 1825 Mary Fetty May 6 1825 Agustus Fetty March 17 1825 Levi Fetty May 15 1831 If the Vincent in question was sent to the "penhouse in Phillidelphia", then Nancy couldn't have been conceived! You think he took flight from prosecution or was paroled? Possibly it was another Vincent Fetty? I am also interested in the possible Fetty/Straight connection.....I am also interested in the connection between the Joseph Fetty listed in the John Shuman will and Rachael Shuman. I would love to hear from any FETTY ancestors out there!!! Ed Prichard, Barboursville, WV

The little partial copy given me, The commonwealth Vs Vincient fetty Clk $4.00 atty 4, Shff 1.50 Recieved my fee Wm T Hayes and the portion below that was cut off? It read as follows Indictment in Larceny a True Bill. Defendant pleas mom Cul; Att Limiter and set for trial April 24, 1818 was tried and found guilty. Sentence of the court, that he return the goods stolen or pay the value thereof to the owner. pay a fine of six cents to the commonwealth, together with the costs of the prosecution. That he be confined in the Penitentiary house in Philadelphia at hard labor for and during a term of three years. Thats all I have, if you follow up on it keep me posted. Does the family names Kenneth cooper and Hilda Anderson, me anything to you? Also a Maxine Blake? According to their letters which are hard to read. Rachael Shuman Fetty was buried at Powhatan Point, Ohio or WV, What have you heard? Keep in touch. Bill Shuman

    3. Bill: No I didn't know about Vincent Fetty, but the Fetty name is familiar to me as I believe one of the Straight girls married a Fetty and he also was in some trouble in Monogehelia. All seem to have some relation to each other the Shumans, Kendalls, Straights, Fetty's, etc. I didn't know Rachel had married a Fetty this should be very interesting thank you. 3. Dear Bill: Hope Judi isn't reading this, however, yes I do read a little German enough to get me by that I could recognize a birth, death, dates of person, etc. I will be going to WVA about last week of May and once settled in for awhile I will start taking trips about the area. I understood however, that Waynesburg (boro) was were I might want to go for Greene County, PA records. But I'll just try all and everything. Hopefully I will also have a computer while in WVA and will notify all of what if anything I am finding. Ok Judi now you can start laughing about my French. They were taken from the records of the Jacobs Luthern church in Mason Town, Pa. If they had these Shuman birth and baptisms, possibly the records would also indicated deaths and burials, marraiges, and possibly more births. There were also Kendals mentioned in the birth records. Anyway the Curch records arre supposed to be in the Archives at the church and in good condition. Can you read any german. 3. To the members of the Shewman Families in the U.S.A. About 5 - 6 years ago, a letter was given to me.I don't know where it had been, but it was passed along after the death of a family member who did not know what it was all about. The writer of the letter was a Pearl A. Shewman, who lived in California, about 20 miles from where the Los Angeles Riots took place. Getting interested??? This lady was trying to write a short history of her father's, Albert Powell Shewman, life for his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had moved to California with his father (mother?) and siblings. They had all been born in Canada. His father was Carleton Miller Shewman, who died in 1913 at Pulmona California. Albert Powell Shewman died in Mesa, Arizona in 1901. This letter of 4 pages, plus 2 pages of drawings of their family tree, was sent originally to Harry Shewman, who had been a Mayor of Morris Manitoba and later an M.P. Pearl Shewman had read of him in a book in the library and wrote to him, wondering if he knew anything about her family. Whether or not Harry ever received this letter before his death we will never know, but it surfaced after the death of another family member. Indeed she was on the right track and would have been a cousin to Harry. If anyone out there is interested, I would be pleased to know as I am also a descendent.
