    3. Dear Bruce, I am attaching a copy of my reply to BBB with regards to Jacob Shuman. I have not received an answer from her as yet but imagine she will get back soon. Hope I'm not interfering. Marty _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Dear BBB; In reply to your request to the Shuman L. page. I am forwarding information on my ggg-grandfather Jacob Shuman (Shewman). I have nothing on a Catherine Shuman but it is possible that there is a connection between the two. My Jacob, as you can see, was born in Botetourt county, VA and came to Preble county, Ohio in 1805 with his father in law Christian Holderman. Don't know if this gives you any help or not. I am the second born of Helen Gertrude Shewman, a fifth generation descendant of Jacob. Marty Descendants of Jacob Shewman, Sr. Generation No. 1 1. 2. Bruce, I am quite sure of the Hamilton Co, OH location for Jacob Shuman in the early 1800s. A Jacob Shuman is listed on the tax list for 1810. Family history tells of the land they once owned which is now part of Cincinnati. Perhaps, the Springfield is not correct. I got that from the Internet and am not able to verify it, at this point. 2. Hi, I have a Jacob Shuman who I am trying to verify as my ggggrandfather. He was born in 1778, possibly in Botetourt Co, Va. He was in Ohio by 1810 as I have found him listed on the tax list for that year in Hamilton Co. I had hoped this Jacob was my gggrandmother Catherine Shuman's father, but I have her as being born in 1792, so the dates don't support that. If the dates are accurate, Jacob and Catherine could have been siblings...or I may just be on the wrong track. I am quite sure that Catherine married Daniel 'Whitaker at Springfield, Hamilton Co, OH in 1814. I have quite a lot of info on Daniel's descendants. Does any of this seem to connect with your Shuman's? BBB

    3. We've got some Shuman relatives in Michigan -- from Edward Schuman ("Buster") who was born in Janesville, WI in 1914. The family moved to Central Lake, MI in the mid-fifties, we're told. The family consisted of Edward II, and wife (unk), and children Edward III, Debra Jean, Geraldine (Cookie), Sandi, and another son. The family is obscured, but Geraldine's two children are Nichole Angelea and Michael Edward. Michael Edward still lives in Central Lakes -- he wrote to my sister with some details on that side of the family. Other Shumans in Michigan include my father's brother Lyle, who lived in Detroit for a while, and my father's mother Frieda Shuman, who moved to Detroit (or that area) sometime in the mid-1920's when the Shuman family split up in Janesville. 3. Dear Judi, As I read your query and the reply from James, it occured to me that you might give the 1870 census a shot. I have wound my way through many rolls of film, and recall seeing jails, poor/alms houses, lunatic asylums, etc listed with the names and ages of those "residing" there. If there was a home for children, you might come across the right place. I would suggest reading everything on the film very carefully. Good luck, Peggy James Shuman wrote: > >James, > > > >Since you are so knowledgeable, I was wondering if you might know how I > >could go about finding orphanages in the Mecklenburg County, NC area. Perhaps someone who lives closer to that area might be much more able to help out. I know that it's been difficult for others to locate records on orphanages in PA, IN (and probably other states, as well) much before 1915. I guess for one thing the names of the institutions kept changing, and for another, some communities attempted to maintain the fiction that no such kind of place existed in their area. Sometimes they went by other kinds of descriptive words than "orphanage", but I'm not very certain as to what those terms were -- but that might be why the library was not helpful. One I heard about was a "children's home" and others had even less obvious names, I think. On the other hand, some terms are harsh-sounding to us: "foundling's home" and "asylum" come to mind. Thus, I'm afraid to even begin guessing what the good people of Mecklenburg County, NC might have chosen to call their orphanage. It would seem to me that there ought to be some kind of county/court records which would include the name of the institution, although I realize not all of them were public institutions. Best wishes on your search, and let us know if you make any progress. JS ____________________________ James Shuman, art instructor Modesto High School jshuman@telis.org ____________________________

    3. I just found where George Fetty applied/received his Rev. War pension also in Greene Co. PA. Thanks for the info on where to search---by the way, as a descendant of Vincent Fetty, I'll take ALL information--the bad as well as the good. Hope to hear more. Linda
