    3. Hi Joy, Saw your query. I am looking at a National Archives Publication, "Immigrant and Passenger Arrivals." On page 13, Record Group M237, it lists rolls of film of passenger lists arriving in New York during the period 1820-1897. The publication is available from any regional Federal Archive. Mine cost about $3.00 four or five years ago, so it may be higher now, but not much. Hope this helps you. 3. Hi Elaine, Saw your query regarding immigration lists into New York in 1885. I am looking at a National Archives Publication, "Immigrant & Passenger Arrivals". On page 10, it lists roll 483 as showing passengers arriving in New York as immigrants for the period Jan 1, 1885 to March 16, 1885. Roll #491 covers the time frame Oct 28 through Dec 31 1885. In between are the other months. They are all part of Record Series M237, consisting of 675 rolls, 1820-1897. Hope this may be of some help. 3. Mike, I can't help you with your query, but I can say that yours gave me quite a shock. My grandfather was James Jacob Shuman and his father was married 3 times - but not to sisters. My father's name is Albert, named after an uncle. I wonder if our two lines are connected somehow. I don't know where the Albert originally came from in daddy's family. By the way this family settled in NC. Keep up your searching and good luck. 2. Hi, Castle Garden opened in 1855 and was the nation's first center for processing arriving immigrants. I have no idea what type of processing took place before that or where the immigrants would have gone to. There is a history of Ellis Island/Castle Garden at http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlwat/hist.htm You can send e-mail to get additional information, that's what I've done. Hope I was of some help. Elaine

    3. Elaine is correct in that Castle Garden was the port of entry in New York prior to Ellis Island. However, one should not forget that many vessels docked elsewhere: Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, New Orleans and several other places. The earlier a family arrived in the new world, the more likely some of these other ports are to have been used. I have a family that arrived in Chicago as their point of entry and I haven't a real clue how they got there other than the family tradition that they came up the St. Lawrence and then across the Great Lakes. Did they transship via rail in Canada and then board another boat on the lakes? 3. I hate to even reply with so little information to offer but... before the port for immigrant arrivals in NYC was built on Ellis Island, I think it was called Castle Garden. However, I do not remember the year Ellis Island was built (1890s? Lee Iococca & the 100th anniversary, have your ancestors names put on a brick for restoration - when was that?), or where records for Castle Garden may be. I hope this can guide your search. Posted on: Shuman/Schuman/Schumann/Shueman Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Shuman?read=69 Surname: Schumann ------------------------- As I have written before, I am searching for any background I can find on my ggrandfather, Anton Schumann. Anton entered the United States in the year 1885. All of the papers that are on file with the Cattaraugus County, NY courts list him as Anton Schumann. Family stories which I have recently become aware of, say that he may have entered this country using the name Anton Harbel. The story goes that his father passed away and his mother remarried to a man by the name of Harbel. Upon entering the U.S. Anton went in search of any Harbel's who may already be living here. When he met Margaret Harbel he fell in love. Margaret's family disapproved of him because they shared the same last name and the Catholic Church of the time was very much against marriages of even the most distant cousins. To keep peace and to secure his engagement to Margaret, Anton began to again go by his birth name of Anton Schumann. I would appreciate feedback from anyone out there searching the line who may have run across Anton Schumann or any Schumann/Harbel connections. Anton came here from Bavaria. Thank you for any help you may be able to give. Elaine Haberland

    3. You are very welcome for the info. I definitely know what it is like to try and track down your ancestry. I have been forunate in having a lot of my information from news clippings, notes that my parents kept and the like. A distant cousin also gave me a lot of information on the Shewman (mine) lineage when he had researched his heritage. His name is Don Williams and although I have not heard from him in a long while, I do have copies of the family group sheets. That helps tremendously. My big problem now is trying to find out where Jacob's parents originated. My guess is Germany but that is only a guess at this time. Good luck on you searching. It does become time consuming but also proves very interesting, and I've met some very nice people on the net.
