Cousins, After an absence of several months, the Taglines at the end of messages can be restored. RootsWeb has updated its fileservers, and I'm working to get them active again. They're helpful for reminding us of how to search the archives, what to do to subscribe/unsubscribe, etc. Has anyone been doing any "roots-diggin'" lately? Regards! Pauline, I have not did much work on the Mayfield line, but Elizabeth was not the only Shuman to Mary a Mayfield. I just can not remember the other tie in at this time and I will advise when I do. Also my notes states that Elizabeths grandfather was Henry FLOYD a soldier in the Rev. War. That she is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Tyler county. Is this correct? That she lived most of her life near Elk fort near Conaway. If I have any thing you can use please advise. Joshuas Cemetery near Hagens is not easy to get into. The Shuman graveyard there is near where Shuman Heights used to be. Mr. Jim Yost took us in the back way in his pick up, otherwise we would still be climbing. I hope that I can help you and vice versa. Respectfully Yours, William E Shuman
Hi William, I am Pauline Tabor in TN. I rec, the obituaries off my e-mail this morning of Joshua Shuman. First, let me tell you how I am associated with the Shuman name. My great grandmother was Temperance Mayfield who married Jonas Sees, the brother of Temperance was James Madison Mayfield who married Sarah Elizabeth Shuman. anyway, I am researching various lines of my family. My moterh was a Nolan from Tyler Co. W.VA & was born in Conaway, she had family on Indian Crees in that area. I have been up there twice to search & look for places they all came from. Posted on: Shuman/Schuman/Schumann/Shueman Obituaries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/ShumanObits?read=49 Surname: Joshua SHUMAN ------------------------- This short obituary is of my great grandfather Joshua SHUMAN, a nephew of Joshua SHUMAN son of John & Elizabeth SHUMAN. I obtained the obituary of Joshua from the Film archives of the University of West Virginia in Morgantown, at the Colson Hall Library. It reads as follows: Joshua SHUMAN died at his residence near Arnettsville, May 12, 1894, in the 67th year of his age. He was called away suddenly, but we are confident that he was prepared for it. He had been a consistant member of the M.E. Church for over forty years, and had always been a liberal supporter of every good cause ready to deny himself for others. He was buried on his own farm in the presence of many sorrowing friends. Appropriate services by the Rev. WITHERS and FEATHER. WES

His heart was touched and thrilled by the majestic grandeur of natures countless forms. But his long journey is at an end, the weary traveler is at rest. SHUMAN --Died on Saturday, July 14th, 1900, at his home on Upper Indian Creek near Hagans, Joshua SHUMAN, aged about 84 years. Interment was in the family cemetery at his home on Sunday, July 15th, at 2 p.m. His wife had preceeded to the other shore by only few months. Hi, If there is a list for departures, it would be in the city from which they emigrated. That is, the city from which the boat left. They also were probably listed in their home town or village when they first left. Another suggestion in lieu of the 1890 census is check for county directories for the area...these are similar to city directories. In Schuylkill Co. PA they are gradually putting all the information from the 1890 county directories on the web. This information is nearly as good as the census would have been. The households are being listed by city, town, and township. Ages are given as well as occupation...even street addresses for cities. There is one problem with this excellent suggestion. The 1890 census is lost--or nearly so. A fire in the Commerce Department in about 1919 destroyed almost all of the census. That is why there is now an effort (by Ancestry.com, I think) to attempt to reconstruct the 1890 census. Civil War veterans may be found on a special census from the 1890s, I am told, but for the most part one must rely on the bracketing Federal censuses, 1880 and 1900. That of 1880 is indexed only if there is a child under 10 years of age in the household and that of 1900 is completely soundexed. Sharon, Here's a suggestion: Since you have one concrete piece of data, start with it. Assume that Omar Curtis was at least 20 years of age when married. Thus, he should have been included in the census of 1880 and 1890. Begin searching the listings for the area around Nelson, PA in those two census reports, to see whether you can find anything listing the SHEWMAN line. Sometimes, we're lucky on a first try. Once you have found the area in which his parents lived, you can search the records of that county for wills, deeds and other documents that might be on file. Often, they will help provide "hard evidence" of a time and place, and thus assist you in your research. Sometimes, they will provide names you didn't already have, and point to other geographic locations. The more new information you uncover, the more leads you will have to do further research! Soon, you should be able to trace the line back to John and Laner. Regards!
