    3. Got your email and many thanks for the info. The only thing I have on my grandmother is her name, date of birth, death and marriage date as follows: Margaret Elizabeth "Lizzy" Beaty (b) July 10, 1864 in Charlotte, NC (d) March 14, 1942 in Monroe, NC (buried in the Monroe City Cemetery) and married September 8, 1885 in Charlotte NC. You did mention that she was orphaned at age 3 and was reared by a Tom and Bill Shuman? The only Bill I know will be mentioned later in this email. Charles Augustus "Gus" Shuman (Lizzy's husband) was (b) April 30, 1865 (d) March 6, 1949 in Waldo, Fl. and buried by "Lizzy" in Monroe. They had twelve (12) children. DO YOU HAVE THE NAMES OF THE CHILDREN THAT WERE BORN TO THEM? If not, let me know and I'll forward what I have. My daddy, Lee Washington Shuman was the baby. He was born the same year your ggrandmother was married - 1908. You stated that you ggrandmother, Marie "Minnie" Flora Shuman Bowen was born in Monroe, NC. I believe she was probably was born in Charlotte, NC since this Shuman Clan did not move to Monroe, NC until around 1908. Where did your GGrandmother "Minnie" get married? Was it Charlotte or Monroe, NC? I have records that Lizzy and Gus purchased land in Charlotte as early as 1892 but nothing further back. They didn't purchase anything in Monroe until after 1908. The Tom and Bill that you mentioned that reared Lizzy might have been the Uncle William Shuman that was Charlest Augustus Shuman's brother. I have found a William H. Shuman who came from Hember Germany around 1860 on the "Elisa Ruebuke?" He was (b) 1-30-1838 (d) 1-26-1899 and married a Margaret Beaty (2-24-1842) (d) 10-5-1883. There we are with another Beaty... I have a list of their children if you need them. There was a large Shuman Plantation located at what is now Remount Road (not sure of the correct spelling) in Charlotte, NC. I went there this past year and the only thing that was any indication that anyone ever lived there were several unmarked graves which I am assuming were the slave graves since they did have several slaves that my daddy told me about. He said he was told by his father that all the slaves respected the Shumans and were well treated. After the Civil War, many stated on at the plantation because they felt it was "home" to them. Of course, they were then paid for their services, as well they should have been. My daddy also told me of an Uncle Wallace which you mentioned. I cannot remember what you said about him? I don't remember too much about him either. I cannot even remember if he were a Shuman or a Beaty. I know that my twin brother, Jerry, has a cane with a snake craved around it that my daddy gave to him that belonged to my grandfather "Gus". Now to get to the Shuman side of our ancestry. Grandpa Gus' father was James W.? Shuman (b) March 5, 1823 (d) April 28, 1872 and buried unknown as yet. He married three (3) times. Our relationship comes from his third wife Jane. James served in the Civil War in the 42nd N.C. Regiment Company D enlisting around January 1, 1864 in Charlotte and being discharged May, 1865 after taking the Oath. He served under Capt. Robert Crawford. My GGrandmother, Jane, applied for a widow's pension July 2, 1904. He married as follows: Martha Beaty on April 11, 1850. Their only child that I could find as a girl, Catherine (b) 1851. (Note that his first wife was a Beaty). I have found that the families Shuman, Beaty and Stauffers were closely related or intertwined due to the marriages but nothing else. James' second wife as Margaret Steoof? or something that looks like this. Prehaps she was a Stauffer and they didn't spell it correctly. They were married in Charlotte January 1, 1857. I think they had two (2) children: a son James Jacob (b) 1-1-1863 and a girl, Brenone? (b) around 1863. She died- date unknown- and he married-- my GGrandmother, Jane Elizabeth Stauffer (b) 12-22-1837 (d) 7-16-1917 in Charlotte NC and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery. They married May 13, 1863. I will send you info on her later. The only children I know of for sure was my Grandfather Charles Augustus and John (b) 1866. It is believed James' parents were: Jacob Shuman (b) 1790 (d) 11-27-1843 and Teny Earnheart (dates unknown for now) who married (April 1815). His father is believed to have been Christian Shuman who married Unknown for now. Will send more later. Hope this helps and send me what you have if you would. So glad you called me... 3. I'm getting a little confused on this issue of Jesse Shuman - you do realize that Monroe County, Ohio is just across the river >from Tyler County, WVA and many a family went across the river back and forth to work on large farms in that area prior to the civil war. So Jesse Shuman being in Monroe County, Ohio would be no great issue and probably is related to our Shumans in WVA. Also it is true that Monroe County records went burnt and it is difficult to find information from them but Monroe County was also Washington County, Ohio so you may want to check Washington County, Ohio records also - and again Noble County, Belmont County Ohio records are also useful. I would like to know how one of the gentlemen in this discussion received copies of the newspaper the Spirit of Democracy - I have been trying to track down that paper for two years - I have other relations who went to Monroe County, Ohio and then back again to WVA I've been searching for and I know of one item in that paper that list my other relations - Any help would be appreciated. Also, there is a web site for Monroe County with census information from l810-to l880 I believe. Please also explain which Jesse is which and I will try to look it up in my death records I collected on the Shuman's also my marriage records from all counties. Thanks. Schoonover, then you AREN'T talking about Jesse Shuman, son of Jacob, brother of Mary who m. John Dougherty. These are two separate families, probably cousins, but one living in WV, the other in OH. Now, to which family does all that lawsuit business belong? Most of the records so far indicate that Jesse s/o Jacob never married, and d. in 1882. I don't have a death date for Jesse s/o Philip, but he was b. ca. 1806 and his wife Mary Kendall d. in 1886. Ron Sapp and others, what do you have on this? 3. CJ, In searching through my database, I found a SCHOONOVER listed, married to Mary Nancy Shuman, the daughter of Philip and Sophia SHUMAN. Philip is also listed as having a son Jesse, but this Jesse supposedly m. Mary KENDALL abt 1826. If this is the "right" family, then there are several researchers on the List, who can fill you in better than I could do. It is thought that Philip who m. Sophia was the brother of my ancestor John, but this has not been proven. So... what info do some of the others of you have, that can help us out here? JS >Hi everyone. 3. CJ, Thanks for your posting. I MAY be able to help a little bit, but not much. I've been working on an elusive part of the family for quite some time, and have established that Jacob SHUMAN, son of my ancestor John SHUMAN, b. abt 1805 in Monongalia Co, (W)VA, m. Mary KENDALL and purchased land in Wayne Twp, Monroe Co, OH in 1836. They had children Jesse and Mary. I have almost no other data on Jesse, but show a different husband for Mary. You might wish to contact a descendant of Mary: Jane Peters <jbp@earthspace.net> and see what else you can learn. Please share with us any connections you establish. JS >Hi everyone. 1. Re: [SHUMAN] New Query
    2. CJ, I will try and not cover what other researchers have related to you. But for future referance. The courthouse in Monroe county , Ohio has had several fires over the years. One in 1840, with the Deed Books being burnt the worst, another fire in 1867 some records survived both fires. I spent one day there and had clues with which to look for some records and never did find the ones, I wanted. They have been working or have held back some of the burnt volumes, as I never saw them. I was told they exist, I don't know for sure. Anyway the Jacob SHUMAN son of John Shuman of Ministers Run and his wife Mary Kendle had several children one of which was Jesse, who never got married. His sister Mary married John Dougherty, they are all buried in the Moose Ridge Cemetery just out of Woodsville. Now earlier as notred there was a land transaction involving Philip Shuman of Wetzel Co., WV and was listed as the grandson of Jesse Shuman. This was in 1863. There may be more records in the courthouse, that may point to this Jesse and Philip W Shuman. Another source of information was taken from the local newspaper The Spirit of Democracy dated September 21, 1853 it was a Probate Notice: Final account of Jonas Shuman grandson of Philip Shuman. I hope this helps and if you get it figured out please advise everybody. It still may tie in to William or John or possibly Henry. William E Shuman

    3. You are right James, Jesse had a sister named Mary and I believe he also had a wife named Mary. What I have in front of me is info from a partition petition in Monroe Co. Ohio.. It says...... "Mary Elizabeth Porte and husband David R. Porter vs Philip Shuman. Mary petitioned for her dowery in April 1848. Jesse Shuman dec., left Mary, his widow and Philip his heir and legal represenative. Philip's guardian was William L. Hunter. Jesse left land in Monroe (NE 1/4 of SW 1/4 of S11-T2-R4 and SW 1/4 of NE 1/4 of S11-T2-R4. MAry was petitioning for 1/3 full share. CJ

    3. Hi everyone. I'm sure that you can tell already that I am new to the list. My query is very short and as everyone else, I hope that there is someone who can fit a few more pieces in. I am looking for a Jesse Shuman who had a sister (possibly) named Mary who was married to a Schoonover. Jesse was married to Mary E. Cox and I believe later divorced. They had a son named Philip. There is a 1847 court case document between David R. & mary Cox Porter (it may ahve been a dowry from the estate) against Philip Shuman, a minor and heir of Jesse. This all may have began in W. Virgina and ended up in Wayne Co., Ohio in the 1800's Hope someone can help me. Even so I would like to read your queries since I am new to your list. Please reply. CJ

    3. This biographical sketch was posted on the BRETHREN list in response to a request for information about Ella Ebbert. I'm forwarding it here because it mentions her mother's name as having been "Schuman." For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Brethren religion, it is what is sometimes referred to as "Dunkard." Several of the locations where SHUMANs lived contain some sort of geographical element named "Dunkard", as in Dunkard's Run, Dunkard Creek, etc. so it obvious that our ancestors were neighbors to these people, although apparently few of the Shumans were members themselves. Today, this group consists of eight or nine separate denominations, of which the largest is called Church of the Brethren. I am a meber of the Old German Baptist Brethren, and so have a reason to subscribe to the BRETHREN list... JS Ella Ebbert was born in Kingman Ks October 27, 1885 parents William and Elizabeth Schuman Ebbert. Education McPherson College 1903-5 06-08 and 1911-14 BA 1914 spent one year at Bethany Bible School.. My probable ancestor, Jacob SHUMAN, m Teny EARNHART in Rowan Co. in 1815, but I know nothing about her family yet. I have an LDS church record of a will for a George EARNHARDT, dated 1823, that lists a Christine among other children, but no other info. I am requesting a copy of that will. Also know that there was a George EARNHAART who owned land close to Christian SHUMAN, Jacob's father, in Rowan Co in the late 1700's. Looking forward to hearing from you. 3. My great, great, grandfather was William Shuman, married to Marion Albritton. They had five sibblings, two of which were Andrew Jackson Byrd Shuman (1868 -1918) and Gereral Lee Shuman (not hard to tell which side they were pulling for). My grandfather, William Archie Shuman (1914 - 1987) was from Hoboken, GA, I think. I would appriciate any information that might help me trace the my lineage back any further. I don't know of any connection with the Shuman's from Claxton and Penbroke. Searching, William Howard Shuman

    3. Cousins, One of our new members asked for help on finding the Archives of past messages. I hadn't done it for a while, so had to hunt around a bit, myself, and thought maybe some of the rest of you would like to know what I found. Of course, you can go to the SHUMAN Resource Page located at http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/s/h/SHUMAN/ which contains a variety of search engines, all pre-set to search for "SHUMAN". However, most of these will give you only a few pieces of information at a time. I believe that generally we are interested in looking back through the Archives of this list, and so that's why I've included the following URL: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/SHUMAN-L/ This will take you to the Archives for 1999. You can simply click on the month that you want to view, and it will take you there. What you'll see on your screen is just the Subject line and name of person posting the message. Click on the subject line and you'll see the complete message. For older messages, the best I can find is to use the SHUMAN Resource Page, and near the bottom of it, just above "Classifieds," is a search box for "ISearch Search Engine for List Archives" at which you can select the year you wish to search. Insert the word SHUMAN-L in the Query space, and click on the Search button. Best wishes in your review of where we've been in the past 14 months! 3. Marie, Your message (below) came through just fine! Hopefull, by now, Carolyn Jarrard will have responded to you. She (and several others) compiles a Shuman book that contains YOUR family. Here's what Carolyn has: John Joseph B. Shuman was son of Joseph M. Shuman, g'son of Martin Shuman, gg'son of Martin Shuman, just as you have it. JJB married Susanna Phillips (he was born 1822 in SC and died before 1883). They had the following children: Joseph D. Harriett Elizabeth...who married Rev. Henry Thomas Crapse (they had 9 children) and HIS parents were Nathaniel Crapse/Elizabeth Jane Shuman(dau of Martin Shuman, above) Ann Mary Isabella Anne Tolbert V. 1869-1873 Susan Salina John S. Agnes J. Mary Ann 1869-1873 I'd guess this LAST "Mary Ann" is YOUR great grandmother (with incorrect DOD). If Mary Adeline was a young widow, in 1905, with 8 children, they would have been born over 1889-1905 period and Mary Adeline would have been born about 1868-1869. The "Ann Mary" listed probably died young, and they "reused" the name (a very common practice back then). Hope this helps you. If you don't hear from Carolyn Jarrard soon, let me know and I'll provide an email address...she provided me with all the above info and may have more. Best I can figure, you and I are 5th cousins and 5C1R (5th cousins, once removed).
