I am still searching for my James W. Shuman in the Mecklenburg Co., NC 1850 and 1860 census. 2. I am researching my 3rd great Grandmother, Rachel Shuman, born 11 July 1811 "near York, York Co., PA". She married Daniel Cramer on 4 March 1830 in the Brush Valley Lutheran Church in Indiana County, PA. Rachel died 5 May 1902 and is buried in the Brush Valley Lutheran Cemetery. Her obit lists her sister, Mary DeArmy. This Mary (Shuman) DeArmy married Adam DeArmin/Deyarmin. I am trying to find the father of this Rachel & Mary Shuman. I am glad to share anything I have. thank you, Donna Cuillard

    1. [SHUMAN] James W. Shuman Descendants
    2. Margaret Treece via
    3. Below is a message from my son about Shuman DNA results, specifically for descendants of James W. Shuman b. NC 1823 d. Mecklenburg Co., NC. Thank you for reading it. If you have any questions you can contact him directly. His name and email address is at the bottom of his report. My Shumans from Rowan County and then Charlotte, NC are difficult to trace. I still have not found James W. Shuman in the 1850 or 1860 Census. We have no reason to think he was not in Mecklenburg County those years. If you know anything about him I would love to hear from you! I have searched every spelling I can think of to find him in those two census. Margaret Shuman Treece James W Shuman Branch DNA report At present, two Shuman descendants of James W Shuman (born 5 March 1823 in North Carolina) have done Y DNA tests, and they match at 37 markers. One has tested at 37 markers and the other has tested at 67 markers. There are five people of interest when looking at 37 or greater markers: Shuman1 Bicking Stonecipher Mabary Shuman2 Stonecipher, Mabary, and Shuman2 have tested at 67 markers and still match. At the lowest level of match, 12 markers, Shuman2 has over 1361 matches. Of these matches, perhaps 15 percent have only done a 12 marker test. There is some possibility that hidden in these 15 percent are some “useful” matches; however, I've looked through them and noticed a few additional occurrences of Mabary and Stonecipher and an interesting surname Shoebridge. Otherwise, all of the interesting Y matches appear to be the five listed above. None of these five have a confirmed haplogroup, nor has any of these five done an advanced test such as “Big Y” or National Geographic Geno 2.0. One person, Stonecypher, who has only done 12 markers, has both a confirmed haplogroup and a distant ancestor, listed as Johann Steinseifer, Abt 1662-Aug1687. The confirmed haplogroup is P312, which is a large swath of the “main” European haplogroup R1b. Needless to say, my prediction is that these two Shumans are R1b – P312 haplogroup, based on this result. However, I have ordered an upgrade (Big Y) to Shuman2's DNA kit that will definitely confirm the haplogroup. The haplogroup is of great interest in determining where our ancient ancestors came from, and if we're lucky enough to have some other people on our branch do advanced testing, we might get within reach of genealogical timeframe. Mabary has an online tree, and his distant male line ancestor is John Mabary, born 1816 in Tennessee. In the Shuman surname project, there are no other results particularly close to Shuman2. The project seems to be in need of more participants. At this time, it's not much help to us. Shuman2 and his Stonecipher match have done Family Finder tests. Some known cousins have matched in Family Finder, but I haven't found Stonecipher, Mabary, or Bicking among the ancestral surnames listed by his matches. Shuman2 has over 1100 Family Finder matches. >From Family Finder, Shuman2's regional DNA make-up is estimated at 81% British Isles and 15% Eastern European, with some Middle Eastern. This is a computer model that may have inaccuracies. We do know his maternal side is likely from the UK. To demonstrate the limitations of such a computer model, see also his sister. Her regional DNA make-up is similar, but also shows some Scandinavian in the mix. If considering additional testing of Shuman1, Shuman2, or someone we think might be related, the best value is currently Family Finder for any close relatives or Y37 for any suspected male line descendants. There may be some Y tests that will help in the future, but with only five matches at 37 or higher markers, it's currently a waiting game. Generally speaking, having results of at least 67 markers for anyone in the R1b group is nearly mandatory, so an upgrade from 37 to 67 markers is likely to help us at some point. As Shuman1 is very close to Shuman2 in lineage, an advanced test such as Big Y may never be needed for him. We'll have to see what results come back from Shuman2. Family Finder matches all cousins, within a certain number of generations. Testing known relatives in addition to the main tester is one of the best ways we make sense of the results. Almost all tests are currently on sale at FTDNA, and there are coupons available that take additional amounts off of the sale price. Feel free to contact me, treece at gsp dot org, if you wish to discuss this Shuman study. Jef Treece 22 Nov 2015

    3. Richard, I have traced my Shuman line back to Philip Jacob Schumann who came over in 1753 from Brake, Germany. My grandmother was a Shuman (Velma Margaret Shuman) born in Franklin, ME. Her father was Lewis Arthur Shuman, born in Plantation 33, ME. He was the son of John Randall Shuman who was born in Lagrange, ME, the son of William Shuman, born in Waldoboro, ME. His father was John M. Shuman who was born in Waldoboro, ME, the son of Philip Jacob Schumann, born in Brake, Germany. I do not have your line documented as yet, but I will check my notes when I get home from vacation to see if I have a connection to your line. It took me almost five years to find my connection to Philip and it is possible that I have more information on your line in a book that I purchased years ago about the history of Waldoboro, Maine. I have specific data concerning these individuals and I suspect they relate to Phillip Schumann who came from Germany in 1753. I would be interested in exchanging information with others. I live a short distance from Waldoboro and have searched the cemeteries in and around Waldoboro. I have data concerning Shumans there. > >Richard Wright >Dickw4497@earthlink.net > > ----------------- > This is a discussion area for anyone who has an > interest in genealogy or history related to the > SHUMAN family > The custodian of this List is James Shuman > SHUMAN-admin@rootsweb.com > ----------------- >------------------------------- >To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SHUMAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    2. Richard Wright via
    3. My name is Richard Earl Wright and my genealogy is derived from the Waldoboro Maine Shumans. My mother was Ruby Evelyn Shuman, borm in Harrington, Maine. Her father was Bert Look Shuman born in Jonesboro, Maine. From there, it is George Edward Shuman born in Knox County, Maine. George T. Shuman born in New Brunswick, Canada (perhaps on a ship anchored there); William Shuman , who is buried in Thorndike Cemetery, So. Thomaston, Maine. Richard Wright Dickw4497@earthlink.net
