    1. [SHOTWELL] Notice about Rootsweb Lists
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. This has been received from the Rootsweb administration: "Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails." We are presently setting up email groups at https://groups.io/. If there is interest in migrating this list to groups.io please respond to this message to that effect ASAP. Please have patience about the creation of your group. The response has been tremendous and it is taking time to get them all set up. Also, creation of this group will depend upon your response to this missive. With heavy hearts, Jim and Di

    1. [SHOTWELL] Help Keep This List Active
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. We just wanted to encourage you all to make use of this list in your family searches. A large number of Rootsweb lists have been made inactive due to no messages over a period of time. We want to keep as many lists active as we possibly can and your participation will help toward that goal. If you have a "brick wall" in your family search, send in a message to the list address with as much information as you have and let's see if someone may be able to help fill in those blanks. Best wishes, Jim and Di

I am specifically interested in the children of this Jeremiah Shotwell and his wife, Sarah Taylor (b. 11 Jan 1795 at Madison Co, VA d. 13 Mar 1878 at Greene Co, VA) - who were married 19 Dec 1810 at Madison Co, VA. She married Benjamin Grove Kindig 21 Oct 1841 in Augusta Co, VA. From what I have learned on Ancestry.com, my lineage is - Abraham Shotwell,1624; John, 1650; Abraham, 1686; John, 1725; Jasper, 1757; David Morris; Orlando; Olive Shotwell Neal; Lola Neal Farnham; Grace Farnham Tobias and myself Ila Tobias Nelson. I am new to this project and I wonder, do any of you research all of the siblings or just your direct ancestor? I was able to download to my ereader the Shotwell Family Annals free. But I find that rather difficult to gather information. I think a hard copy would be easier. I would like to hear from any Shotwell and exchange info and stories. It appears to be wishful thinking on the part of the people perpetuating this. The Shotwell Family Annals book certainly doesn't mention anyone before Abraham, and that book along with the various local histories of New York and New Jersey only mention Abraham as the progenitor of the line. Obviously he had a father, and it was likely that his father was born in England, but other than speculation and wishful thinking I haven't seen any proof of any information on Abraham's ancestry. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ericshotwell67 Surnames: Shotwell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.shotwell/232.3.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Barbara, I'm the same Eric Shotwell who replied to the chain earlier. Long message here... One thing in your lineage that stood out to me: I know it's compelling to believe that your John Shotwell 1650-1719 is the son of Abraham, but according to all the records I have seen, the John Shotwell *b. circa 1650) who is the son of Abraham *never* had a son named Reuben. I think there may be some confusion on your part or in your records, because John (son of Abraham) was reportedly born in (and resided in) NJ, and was father to John R. Shotwell, II; Elizabeth Laing (Shotwell); Abraham Shotwell c.1692-1757; Sarah Smith (Shotwell) and Mary Thorne (Shotwell). He lived and died in NJ. Your John, father of Reuben, is listed as having come to the new world in 1670 from Warwickshire, settling in Virginia. So... it appears to me that you would *not* in fact be the descendant of Abraham Shotwell, since from all the records I have seen there was no "Reuben" in Abraham Shotwell's line. Here's a listing of Reuben's genealogy from another site: http://www.geneajourney.com/shtwll.html You'll note that all of these descendants resided in Virginia, particularly in Culpeper and Mecklenburg, VA. However, almost all the Shotwells in my line -- Abraham's line -- were born and died in Elizabethtown or Woodbridge, NJ... Approximately 275 miles away as the crow flies. So, I hate to say this, but my educated guess is that you aren't in fact the 9th Great-Granddaughter of Abraham. Though you would be the 8th Great-Granddaughter of John Shotwell of Virginia, formerly of Warwickshire, England. I think that although the dates appear to be the same, there is just NO possibility that the John Shotwell 1650-1719 of NJ is the same person as the John Shotwell born c. 1650 in Warwickshire and removing to the Culpeper, Virginia area. Which is not to say that the two families aren't related *further back* from Abraham... they may well be, but there is no evidence to support that whatsoever, either. Bottom line: Your lineage listed in this message thread seems to be correct, *except* for the connection to Abraham Shotwell b. 1624, which is incorrect.
