Surnames: Shockey, Holmes,Short, Cue, Baxter, Goldsmith, Lawson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZVHBAIB/272 Message Board Post: I have been searching for the parents of Mahala Jane Shockey for over a decade and with the indexing of the 1870 Census, I finally found her living with her mother and siblings in Salt Creek, Mason, Illinois. The listing is as follows: Shockey, Washington, (36), Susan (54), Nancy M (23), Daniel M (19), Mary E (16), Mahala (14), Rosina (12), Mary D (4), and James (2). I have not been able to find them in 1860 although there is mention of Nelson dying in Missouri in a biographical sketch of James Lawson, husband of Rosina Shockey. This sketch is from the 1912 Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Sangamon County Vol II. In 1850 the family is in Madriver, Champaign, Ohio and is as follows: Shocky, Nelson (31), Susan (36), Henry (10), Washington (7), Nancy (4) and Margaret (1). Henry Shockey, the first born, seems to have been a miner searching out west for his fortune. He is listed as a miner living in Montana in the 1880 Census, while his wife and children are living with her parents in Iowa. Sara Jane Holmes is living with William and Elizabeth Holmes and her brother, Thomas B Holmes. Her children listed are: William Shockey (12) b. IA, Daniel (8) b. IA, Elizabeth (5) b. NV, John (2) b. NV, and Charles (7m) b. NV. Washington Shockey marries Arminda N. Short Patton (Patterson?) in Mason Co. Illinois in 1872. By 1880 they are in Salt Creek, Mason, Illinois with Jno. H. Shockey and T.J. Shockey as children. Living next door, in 1880, are G.H. Short and Jane with 2 children: Jas. S.C. Short, and Melissa Short. These may be Arminda's parents and siblings. Nancy M Shockey marries Nelson D. Cue 1 Jun 1871 in Mason Co. Illinois. By 1880, they are living in Salt Creek, Mason, Illinois and have 2 children: Will (7) and Mary (15)--possibly from a previous marriage. Daniel N. Shockey marries Anna Baxter in Mason Co. Illinois 22 Mar 1876. By 1880, they too are in Salt Creek, Mason, Illinois with a son, Joseph (8) and a bro-in-law, Jno. living with them. Mahala Jane Shockey marries Thomas W. Goldsmith 5 Sep 1876 in Lincoln, Logan, Illinois. By 1880 they are living in Broadwell, Logan, Illinois and have David Peter (2) and Albert Wesley (6/12). They later have a dau., Dollie Ann b. around 1882. Sometime between 1880 and 1889 they move to Sedalia, Pettis, Missouri where Thomas dies. Mahala marries 2nd W.S. Armstrong 17 May 1889. Children of this union were Lottie F. Armstrong and Nora Augusta Armstrong. Mahala and W.S. Armstrong later moved to Noble Co. Oklahoma where Mahala died in 1929. As previously mentioned, Rosina marries James Lawson 3 Aug 1875 in Logan Co. Illinois. The 1880 Census has them living in Broadwell, Logan, Illinois with 2 children, Girtie M (3) and Louis M (8m) and her mother, Susan (67). The above mentioned biographical sketch also lists the following children: Gertrude Taylor, Louis Lawson, Isadell Swalley, William Lawson, Elizabeth Standage, Lester Lawson, James H. Lawson, and Eunice I. Lawson (deceased). I hope the above information will be beneficial to someone. At the least, it may give a clue to an ancestor's location. I would like to correspond with anyone who has Nelson Shockey as an ancestor and might know where in Missouri, he lived/died. ==== SHOCKEY Mailing List ==== To update or correct your genealogy data in the Shockey Family database, send either a GEDCOM file on floppy disk or by email, or Family group sheets to: Lesley Shockey, Rt. 2 Box 36-A, Sandyville, WV 25275
