Surnames: Shockey/Schacke/Spencer/Webber Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZVHBAIB/304 Message Board Post: My gg grandmother, Caroline C. Webber (Weber) married a Lewis Schake in Quincy, Adams, IL on 6-11-1856. Caroline was the daughter of Charles Webber (born in Germany) and Nancy (Annie) Unknown (born in PA). Sibs are Julia F., Charles F., Sarah, Frank, & Henry Webber. On the 1880 Adams Cty Census, she is listed as "Caroline Shockey, Widow." Her children living with her at that time were: John Shockey (22) and Lulu Shockey (19). Under Lulu's info her father is listed as being born in Germany. Lulu married Frank Edward/Edgar Spencer and gave birth to William George, Frank E. (Edward/Edgar), Emmett F. (allegedly Francisco), Nina Eva/Elizabeth, & Carter "Carl" Harrison Spencer (my maternal grandfather). They must have lived in Chicago, Cook Cty, IL for some period of time because my grandfather was born in Cook Cty in Oct 1884. I have been scouring everything I can here on the boards, in Illionis, Quincy & Adams Cty records but it seems like my Webbers & Shockeys just vanished into thin air! Most likely, the Webber girls (Julia & Sarah) married some unknown heart throbs and left the area. Family lore has it that Julia married a Harvey, possibly w\the first name of William, and moved up socially and possibly even moved to Kansas City (not sure if KS or MO). Evidently, he was a prominent man active in Kansas City society, mucky muck in the Masonic Order and a Knights Templar. Family story has it that he sang at Lincoln's funeral. I saw a photo years ago that seemed to support the story but unfortunately didn't pay attention to the details. Supposedly, Julia & Sarah were babes & socialized with the John Wood family. He being the former governor of IL & a highly respected citizen of Quincy. I haven't been able to track down John Shockey or his uncles, Charles and Frank Webber. Lewis Schacke is a complete mystery to me. I'm not sure when Schacke became Shockey within our family but it seems to have occurred between 1856 when Lewis & Caroline married and 1880 when she appears as a widow. A funny sidebar...Caroline's mother appears variously as Nancy Webber, C. Annie Weber, & Anna Webber in various census reports. Her age seems to vary from census to census also. She claims to have been born in PA but some of her children claim that both she & her husband Charles were born in Germany. Go figure! We still have family in the Quincy area: Keil, Speckhart (sp?), Spencer, Moore, & Blatter. Anyway, I'm trying to fill in some gaps and thought perhaps some of this might resonate with other Shockey searchers. Sorry if I've gone on a bit long here but it just seemed to lengthen as I filled in the gaps with what I've been led to believe as well as what I've researched. Thanks, Diane redcat@domocities.com
