    1. Shockey Reunion
    2. Marie Shockey
    3. Hi Cousins, It's almost reunion time. I don't have a count on the number that have reservations, but I do know that we have some new cousins again this year. That is always exciting. All of the preparations are progressing as they should. I don't have to give a number to the caterer until Friday evening so I should have a pretty accurate count by then. I am still hoping to be able to take a group to see the WWII Memorial if enough of them wish to go. I can have a Van or a Bus depending on the number. The bus would be more comfortable and cheaper if there is a reasonable number interested. I would appreciate it if you would let me know if you want to do this. We get the vehicle and the driver for eight hours for a flat rate. Howard, are you going to bring your Keyboard? You all drive careful and I will see you July 1st. Marie

The Henry Hoblitzell family lived next door to the Dehasses in Elizabethtown, Marshall Cty, Virginia (now W.Virginia) at the time of the 1950 census. Can anyone clarify? Also interested in Margaret Pierce Carleton, Henry's wife, and her ancestors. Thanks.

    2. Marie Shockey
    3. Hi Folks, The Monticello trip did not have enough reservations to go, so I had to cancel it. However, I have been trying to get a way to take some folks to see the WWII Memorial instead. The Tour Company is trying to provide me with a large van that would seat 8 to 10 people. I know there are some who really want to have the opportunity to do this while they are in the area. Let me know how many of you are interested. I am meeting with the 'tour lady' on Monday. I kinow some of the folks intended to try to do this trip on their own, but I hate to send them into DC without someone to take care of getting them to the right place and not having to worry about parking. Just get back to me before Monday. Looking foreward to seeing you on 1 July!!! Marie

    1. Reunion Bus Tour
    2. Marie Shockey
    3. Hi Cousins, The cut-off date for this event has passed and I have had to cancel the tour for lack of participation. The only thing that I can get is to see the WWII Memorial and a few other things. That does not require reservations--only the Bus- and a definite number who will go, The cost will not be as much as the other one--I don't think, and I need to know who is interested right away. If enough of you "commit" to go, I will get the cost computed and let you know. Having to plan these things and then cancel, is a lot of trouble for everyone involved. Please let me know ASAP. Marie

    3. Hi Folks, The reservations for Sunday Lunch on 4th of July are not comming in very fast, neither are the reservations for the Bus Tour on Friday. I do have deadlines for these and If I don't have enough, it will mean that we will have to go to "Plan B", which I have not come up with yet. I can't guess how many will do what and when they require paid reservations, I just have to wait on you all. Check your newsletter for all of the dates and details. Thank You, Marie

From the history it can be seen there was plenty of mixed relationships. Talking about her Lane side, she said her grgrandfather was offerred land due to his Indian blood. The Indian genealogy pages have several marriages with names familiar to Jackson Co. Wyoming Co. has many who are on the Rolls. Several of the men were Indian Scouts, and there are no definitive records about their wives. Shadrach Rice was on a mission where they brought back nearly 100 women and children from raids on Indian lands. I figure it was common for some of them to marry. Too bad we can't prove anything. I don't know about some wanting to be Indian, but one of my aunts was said to have moved far away, and to have been very unhappy that she looked Indian there in Jackson Co. I don't see how to change my address to Housema2003@aol.com. The above is incorrect.

It is easy to see why it would be hidden; it was not that long ago when what school a child was sent to was based on race; of which there were two: White or Non-White Maybe the "claims" were nothing more than people "wanting" to be Indian. Don't know but it was a "hush-hush" subjecty when I was a kid (admitedly a rather long time ago).

    3. Hi, I have no proof of Indian background in the Shockey family, but I guarantee that if it was there, it was kept hidden. I know from experience that it was kept a deep dark secret. I was not born a Shockey, I married one, but my great grandmother on my mother's side was an Indian. It was kept from me until sometime in the 1970's when my sister (who was divorced), was dating a man who had carried the mail. He told her of her Indian heritage and showed her where they had lived. I asked my mother about it and she, very reluctantly, admitted it. I thought it was great! What on earth is wrong with being part "Native American"? I feel sure that there is a link in the Shockey family too, it is just hard to dig up. 3. My Mother was Margaret Marie - 10th child of Samuel T. and Jannie (Allen) Shockey of Winifred/Onaga, KS. I had heard many years ago (when they started to look up their family background) that there was an Indian (native-american) name that when Angloized, sounded somewhat like Shockey, but of no relation to us. Maybe, this is how the Indian background stories got started. - R.
