    3. I have some Shockey's who are indians, but the blood comes from there mother is a West. Louisa Married George Shockey which makes there kids Part Indian as far as i can tell they were all marked as white in the census. They did apply for there indian rights through the choctaw tribe. i have copies of there original indian papers. it took them years to be accepted into the tribe. they were denied then accepted. Louisa was an aunt so i have not dug very far into the research of the Shockey family, but if anyone recongnized the name Louisa West and George Shockey contact me and we can share info. Guess it is >one of those things we may never know. Hi Sara, Have you looked at all the census records of your grandmother's ancestors, both paternal and maternal, in the US census between 1850 and 1900? The census takers were supposed to list anyone with one quarter or one eighth Indian blood as AI (for American Indian) instead of W (for White) or one of the other ethnic groups. The AI should not be confused with the AL for Alien in the Citizenship Status column. There was one state that for many years insisted on marking on all records the Mu for mulatto for anyone with one eighth or more Indian blood. In the1910 Census Color and Race, the following was used. * White W * Black B * Mulatto Mu * Chinese Ch * Japanese Jp * Indian. In * All others Ot Some who were part American Indian may have tried to hide the fact from the census taker. However many census takers are suspected of marking the AI if they suspected based on a persons hair and facial features. One of my brothers has high cheek bones, is an excellent tracker and can slip through the woods even better than I can. We have heard stories of Indian ancestors in at least three of our ancestral lines. However none of the possible official records show this to be true. I would have concerns about those making the official recordings if it were not for the fact that they do have members of other families marked appropriately. 3. You know, I remember when I was young listening to the old folks talk. I remember that subject being breeched. My grandfather, Christian David Shockey, had this answer: "Couldn't be any indians in the Shockey family.....They are too good at drinking!!!!" We have never seen any proof that Indian blood exists in our family, but that doesn't mean there isn't. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sara Burnett" <cburnett2@cfl.rr.com> To: <SHOCKEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 20, 2005 8:10 AM Subject: Re: [Shockey] Shockey - Shockay Indians > Les > That is the very reason I was asking..It is one of those stories that has > come down through my mothers side of the family.
