    3. Jimmy - I'm fairly certain that the two girls living with Elijah and Nancy in the 1850 census are NOT his children. Here's my rationale. Daniel and Mentena SHIVER (Elijah's brother and Abraham SHIVER's sons) were living in Pulaski Co., GA in the 1830 census and they had five children, the youngest two named Louisa (Lewezer) and Mentena (Mentney), b. 1831 and 1833 (we know their names from Daniel and Elijah's father Abraham's will in 1844, which is on my web site), respectively. Daniel died in 1833 sometime as per his estate settlement in 1833 in Pulaski Co., and Mentena evidently died shortly thereafter (abt. 1835 or so). It's my considered opinion that Elijah and Nancy took in his youngest girls and took them to AL with them. Earlier census records are harder to sort out, since there is both an Elijah in Laurens Co., GA in 1830 and an Abijah/Alijah in Pulaski Co., GA in 1830. There are also several A. SHIVER(S) and one E. SHIVERS in the 1840 Pulaski Co., GA census. Any of these men could be your Elijah (you would not believe how I've seen that name butchered in the census!) I suspect the latter is Elijah's brother Abijah, but given the penchant census takers had for spelling names wrong, I can't confirm that. My assumption is that Elijah and Nancy's own children were grown and gone by the time 1850 rolled around. I know that they did have one daughter, Jane b. 1828 who md. Uriah BRACEWELL (probably in Dale Co., AL about 1846, but I have no proof of that), as they were both living with them in the 1860 Dale Co. census. Anyway, if there's anyone else out there that can contradict this with more evidence than I have, please be my guest! I've been working to try and sort out some of these children of Abraham's using census and other information and some of Drexel's research, and have been having a dickens of a time. Just remember that just because someone was listed in the same household in 1850, 1860 and 1870, it does NOT imply an immediate family type of relationship (though that's what I usually start with until I find evidence to the contrary or the ages don't match up or something). Specific familial relationships were not included in the census until 1880. Which of Elijah's children do you descend through? Do you have information on that line? I'd love to know what you know! :-) Mary Kathryn -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@ibm.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy South King Co. Gene.
