Clarksville Baptist Church, Demont Road: Shiver, Nellie Mae (Smith), born 3-13-1930, died 5-26-50 Shiver, Phyllis Marie (McDonald), born 9-16-1941 --- Was called to appraise home of Louie Shiver a couple of weeks ago. Guess what? He wasn't of our race. He wasn't home, but I told his wife, Girlie Shiver, that my family came from SW Georgia and would be interesting to know where his came from. You should have seen the look on her daughter's face when my son and I walked in and introduced ourself. The girl, seemed to be a teenager, gave her mom a very funny look! He must be well off as they have four sat dishes and several cars in yard! My Dad did tell me earlier this year (age 84), that his uncle, Loyd Shiver , in Camilla, had a black family that worked for him by name of Beacham, and one of them got in trouble over a cutting or something of that nature. So uncle Loyd loaded up his belongings and moved him and his family over to Houston County, AL to get him out of harm's way. That family, or their descendants still live in the Ashford area .
A friend sent this to me with the comment that with all these genealogy websites coming online, we may just dethrone porn as the #1 activity on the internet! ;-) I thought I'd pass this on for those of you who might have Ellis Island ancestors or who might help those that do! Now, how patient are you? <vbg> ********************** Genealogy.com and Discover(R) Card Sponsor New Web Site to Make Ellis Island Immigration Data Available Online Web Site Will Complement American Family Immigration History Center(TM) To Be Located at Ellis Island NEW YORK, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. today announced that Genealogy.com and Discover(R) Card are sponsoring the development of a first-of-its-kind new Web site geared to help individuals learn more about their ancestors who immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island. This Web site, which will go live in 2001, will complement the eagerly-awaited family history research facility to be located at Ellis Island: The American Family Immigration History Center(TM). In October 1998 the Foundation, working in cooperation with the National Park Service, unveiled the plans for the Immigration History Center, which represents a huge milestone for family history enthusiasts and the estimated 40 percent of today's U.S. population whose ancestors came through Ellis Island. Today, Foundation president and CEO Stephen Briganti announced the $22.5 million project had been expanded to also provide access to data, relating to immigrants who came through Ellis Island, to millions of people across the country and around the world via the Internet. Visitors to both the new Web site and the Immigration History Center will be able to easily access information about their immigrant ancestors via a state-of-the-art interactive database. This database will include information on more than 17 million people who entered the United States through Ellis Island from 1892-1924, the peak years of U.S. immigration. Visitors will be able to access 11 fields of information such as the name of the ship; the names, ages, and occupations of the passengers; the town or village and country they were leaving; their destination in the U.S.; and more. Previously there was no index to the fields of information in the manifests. To create the new interactive database, volunteers of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints (LDS) are taking information directly from the ships' passenger manifests currently on microfilm at the National Archives and Records Administration, then manually decoding and indexing it. This database will be made easily accessible and searchable, both online and at Ellis Island. In addition, visitors will be able to obtain a reproduction of the original ship's manifest and a photo of the ship of passage. Individuals will also have the opportunity to create a Living Family Archive at Ellis Island by opening a family file and scanning in family photos, documents, and records to store them for posterity at the island. "We are so very pleased to have Genealogy.com and Discover Card join the Foundation in making these valuable and personal records from Ellis Island readily available to millions of individuals worldwide," said Mr. Briganti. "Their sponsorships will help us link the present with the past, aiding the millions of people in search of their families' roots in America." Genealogy.com, one of the leading resources for online family history and the exclusive genealogy sponsor for the project, will be providing gifts in-kind relating to technological and promotional efforts, as well as a financial contribution to the overall project. "We're proud to demonstrate our commitment to the online pursuit of genealogy by joining the Ellis Island Foundation to make these valuable and exclusive records available to anyone with Internet access," said Rob Armstrong, CEO of Genealogy.com. "This fits well with our business strategy of making the pursuit of genealogy more accessible and interesting to everyone. This new Ellis Island Web site will be a valuable starting point for family history enthusiasts everywhere." Discover Card is joining the project as the exclusive sponsor in the financial services category. "The development of The American Family Immigration History Center(TM) is an important undertaking that will soon become a hub for families searching their genealogical past," said David Nelms, president of Discover Financial Services, Inc. "We are proud to be a sponsor of this project and excited to be able to help families from all walks of life." Discover Card will be developing programs that encourage their Cardmembers to research their ancestry by using the Internet site or by visiting the Center. The Immigration History Center, which is being designed by Edwin Schlossberg Incorporated (ESI), is scheduled to open in 2001. Once again it appears that those with nothing better to do have struck. It looks like my days of reassuring people with "you can't get viruses by just opening your e-mail" are over! :-( For those of you computer gurus out there, you are probably already aware of this. The hard bound information is information that i have not seen anywhere on the Internet yet !!!. Jimmy - I'm fairly certain that the two girls living with Elijah and Nancy in the 1850 census are NOT his children. Here's my rationale. Daniel and Mentena SHIVER (Elijah's brother and Abraham SHIVER's sons) were living in Pulaski Co., GA in the 1830 census and they had five children, the youngest two named Louisa (Lewezer) and Mentena (Mentney), b. 1831 and 1833 (we know their names from Daniel and Elijah's father Abraham's will in 1844, which is on my web site), respectively. Daniel died in 1833 sometime as per his estate settlement in 1833 in Pulaski Co., and Mentena evidently died shortly thereafter (abt. 1835 or so). It's my considered opinion that Elijah and Nancy took in his youngest girls and took them to AL with them. Earlier census records are harder to sort out, since there is both an Elijah in Laurens Co., GA in 1830 and an Abijah/Alijah in Pulaski Co., GA in 1830. There are also several A. SHIVER(S) and one E. SHIVERS in the 1840 Pulaski Co., GA census. Any of these men could be your Elijah (you would not believe how I've seen that name butchered in the census!) I suspect the latter is Elijah's brother Abijah, but given the penchant census takers had for spelling names wrong, I can't confirm that. My assumption is that Elijah and Nancy's own children were grown and gone by the time 1850 rolled around. I know that they did have one daughter, Jane b. 1828 who md. Uriah BRACEWELL (probably in Dale Co., AL about 1846, but I have no proof of that), as they were both living with them in the 1860 Dale Co. census. Anyway, if there's anyone else out there that can contradict this with more evidence than I have, please be my guest! I've been working to try and sort out some of these children of Abraham's using census and other information and some of Drexel's research, and have been having a dickens of a time. Just remember that just because someone was listed in the same household in 1850, 1860 and 1870, it does NOT imply an immediate family type of relationship (though that's what I usually start with until I find evidence to the contrary or the ages don't match up or something). Specific familial relationships were not included in the census until 1880. Which of Elijah's children do you descend through? Do you have information on that line? I'd love to know what you know! :-) Mary Kathryn -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@ibm.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy South King Co. Gene. I just thought I should inform you that as of 1 Oct 1999, my e-mail address will change from <mkozy@ibm.net> to <mkozy@attglobal.net>. This is not my choice, but because IBM Internet Services sold out to AT&T Global (it was nice while it lasted! <g>), the domain name is going to change as of 1 Oct. So that gives you two whole days to get my address changed in your address book! ;-) Not really... Evidently, the ibm.net address will still be accepted for one year, but whenever I respond to an e-mail, my address will show up as the attglobal.net address. Elijah Shiver and Nancy Shiver were living in Dale County Alabama in the 1850 Dale County Census.Does anyone out there know the names of all their children. I have the names listed on the 1850 census, but I think that there were maybe some older ones that had already left home. Thanks Jimmy From jsredtiger@aol.com

Hi Vickie and all, I looked back through my notes and I found that I had listed Charlie Ross Shiver (son of James Manning Shiver and not to be confused with the Charlie Ross who is son of William Jackson Shiver of Enoch's line) was married to a Josie Naomi Pitts. ( I wasn't showing any parents for her) No marriage date. A couple of things bother me. One was the dates that I am showing for Charlie and Josie. Charlie B: 16 Jan 1896 and D: 31 Oct 1970 unknown where he died Josie B: 3 Dec 1890 and D: 3 Nov 1932 in Florida Note that this would make Josie six years OLDER than her husband and she died 38 years before her husband! Of course, this is possible!!! I show 8 children: Julie; Miles Herman; Lucille; Naomi; Ellen; Manning; Melvin Ross (born and died same day) and Robert Ross. Ellen was shown as being born in 1932. Did Josie die in Childbirth???? Did Charlie Ross ever remarry??? I have a note somewhere that seem to indicate that he had had two wives! Where did I get that?????? And if he died, who was the second wife????? Well, I looked again and sure enough found a second wife - Alma Bailey - with whom he had two more children - Johnnie and Norman Shiver. Does this agree with what you all have??????? You stated that Josie was listed as Josie Clark - WHERE was she listed as Josie Clark??? If grandma is correct by saying that she was John melvin Pitts's sister, then her mother would be Mary Steadman and her father would be Cudge who is Melvin John Pitts. Is that correct ?? I'm a little bit confused here!!!! And that's not hard for me to be :) I don't have any data on D. B. irland and W. D. Ireland - I show Fannie Roxann Irland Shiver's parents to be Thomas J. Ireland and Sarah Bozeman (and for Mary Kathryn - I don't have the parents for Sarah Bozeman yet) Nor do I show any other children for Thomas and Sarah but "Fannie" though I am sure there were more!!! I think the 1920 census would be the first this family (Charlie Ross and Josie) would be listed going by him being born 1896 plus 20 years equal 1916. So need to look at 1920 census which I have not done yet - does anyone have this census record?? Let me know about the name Clark and where it came from - maybe we can straighten out the family!! I would like to have others input on this family - I could be entirely off base here -- so help!! Lyrice
Can anybody help this nice lady? I already answered her questions about Dedemiah... MKK ****************** Hi Mary, My name is Vickie Burch Boyd. I am a descendant of James Manning Shiver. His daughter, Annie Frances Shiver Pitts Tucker Williamson was my great grandmother. Annie married john Melvin Pitts who died at 29 years of age. They had 2 daughters. Susie Lee Pitts Burch Durant (my grandmother) and Nell Pitts Richardson. My grandma married Aaron Chester Burch and had 2 sons, George Edward Burch(my father) and Roy Eugene Burch. I have been working on this family for about a year now and finally made a break through a few months ago. My grandma is a great help but she is 78 years old and doesn't remember all she would like to. I spoke with Lyrice back in June and I went to Cool Springs Cemetery in July on vacation. While I was there I took several photos of grave stones. By the way there are a lot of Shivers there. I have one photo of a slab that was broke quite a bit and it said - SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF Didamirah Shiver Born: May 1816 Died: August 1931 - GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN How was this Didamirah kin to Enoch's Dedemiah? I have photos of D B Ireland and W D Ireland. Are they related to Frances "Fannie" Roxann Shiver(James Manning Shiver's wife)? If so, how? Also, so you have any info on John Melvin Pitts, his parents were Melvin "Cudge" john Pitts and Mary Steadman. I am looking for their ancestors. My grandma tells me that James Manning's son Charlie Ross Shiver married a "Josie". My grandma remembers her. Grandma says she was John Melvin Pitts's sister. I see that she is listed as Josie Clark. Josie's mother is a Steadman. could it be that Josie's mother and John Melvin's mother were sisters and Cudge and Mary Pitts raised her??? If you have any info on this let me know. It would be a big help. Thanks, Vickie Burch Boyd bboyd@flinet.com -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@ibm.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy South King Co. Gene. Hi Bert and John! Welcome to our Shiver Group!! Glad to have you aboard. I also descend from Enoch - Mary Kathryn and I are second cousins, once removed - we both descend from Loyd Hampton Shiver - She from his son, Perry, and me from his son, Jessie. I would be very interested in learning which of Henry Solomon's children that you descend from: I am showing as children: James; William; Aaron; Jessie; Louis; and Fredie. How about posting your line!! Happy to meet my "New" cousins - Let me hear from you! Lyrice Shiver McCranie Valdosta, GA
I would like to welcome john and Bert to our Shiver family. I descend from Enoch Shiver--Rebecca & Jacob--Mary Elizabeth and William Shirah--- Lillar Shirah and Marion Tucker. I would be interested in anything you would be willing to share. Welcome to the group. Linda
Hello everyone, I'd like to take a minute and introduce John and Bert Shiver, who have recently joined our ranks. They are descendants of Enoch Shiver (Lyrice, I found some more! <vbg>) through his son Ransom Shiver and Lydia A. Sullivan. Their line follows down through Ransom's son Henry Solomon Shiver, who married (1) Sarah Shiver -- dau. of Anthony Shiver and Marinda Tolar and (2) Annie Hall. They descend through the second marriage. Neither of these gentlemen knew much about their Shiver heritage prior to sending me an e-mail query about a week or so ago. I've filled them in on what we know so far and would invite you all (especially those of you descended from Enoch or Manning --yep, they are descended through Manning too through his daughter Rebecca Jane who md. William Manning Sullivan) to make them feel welcome to our group! I'm still working on the Lonnie Eugene Shiver mystery and am hoping to have that solved by the end of this week. A little census work ought to help with that one. Be watching the web site in the next few months for a considerable number of updates. I have cut back on a considerable number of commitments lately to make more time for my family (living and dead!), and am starting to seem some progress and perhaps a faint (very!) light at the end of the tunnel. I'm working to enter all my data (and it is a LOT) into my genealogy program so that I can then use that to update the web site. As Jim Swailes knows first hand, I have quite a bit of census data that I haven't had time to transcribe (and which he would LOVE to have! <g>). I'm anxious to get it all out to you on the site. I have received pictures from some of you of your ancestors, and if there are others of you out there that have pictures and you have the ability to scan them, please do so and send them to me via e-mail. I intend to start getting these up on the web site as well. Take care! Hope you all have a wonderful week!
