    1. [SHIVER] Shiver Data
    2. William Cassady
    3. Would like to correct a couple of items that appeared in the Shiver letters today. First, the name of Samuel James Augustus Shiver's wife was Sarah "Ann" Prestwood, not Sarah Jane. This mistake probably came from D. E. Cain's book. On page 295, he refers to her correctly as Sarah Ann, but on page 299(and throughout the rest of the book), he changes her name to Sarah Jane. Her full name was Sarah Ann Delila Prestwood. The second item is the birth date of Gilley Shiver, who married William Terry Prestwood. She was born on 10 Feb. 1819, not 1818. Terry and Gilley were my g-g-grandparents. Bill Cassady

    1. [SHIVER] Changes to the list...
    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. To SHIVER-L (and SHIVER-D) listmembers: Just wanted to let all of you know that I've just made a quick change to the list utilities for SHIVER-L that will basically direct replies to the list. I figure we are a pretty cozy bunch, and don't mind reading one another's replies. Just be aware that this is going to occur though, so if you want to send something PERSONAL (or that you don't want read by the whole list!), make sure that you either send a new message to that individual's e-mail address, or replace <SHIVER-L@rootsweb.com> with their address if you hit the REPLY TO: button. I did this mostly so that everyone could see the answers being sent about research questions, since generally people hit the "Reply To:" button and don't address their answers to the list (which I think would be helpful). There are about 70 subscribers to our list though (can you BELIEVE that?), so it will increase traffic on the list. If you find that you are getting too many messages (normally we're a pretty sedate list, but I'm hoping to shake things up and get us talking more frequently), rather than unsubscribing, please just unsub from the mail mode (SHIVER-L), and resubscribe to the digest mode (SHIVER-D). Be aware that if you do this, you won't get the messages as frequently, and you'll usually get several at a time in one e-mail. This reduces the number of messages, but also gets you a little "behind" the list timewise. (The digest will be sent out about 18 hours or so after a message is received by the server -- including any replies, etc.). I hope the new structure will help all of us keep up with the discussion better! 1. Re: [SHIVER] Bonnie's Shiver Line
    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. Bonnie - Welcome to the group! :-) I've seen your name floating around, but I don't think we've actually corresponded... I'm grateful for you posting your family tree, as it has finally cemented the connection on that CHANCEY line (Jim Swailes, did you catch that? <g>). Jim was sure there had to be a connection, since he kept seeing them "popping up" next to the AL SHIVERs. Since I'm obviously in the mood for creating conflict (;-)), I'm going to throw out another question that will probably get a good discussion going. What about the TWO Jacob's born in 1789? (We seem to have a similar situation to the two Alfreds going here...) Here's my quandry: There appears to be a Jacob, b. 1789, who md. Mary ??? abt 1823 or so, lived in Lee Co., GA and had the following children: 1. Jacob J. SHIVER (b. 1825), md. Rebecca SHIVER, dau. of Enoch. 2. Miles K. SHIVER (b. 1829), md. 5 different wives! 3. a dau. b. abt. 1830 4. another dau. b. abt. 1832 (I speculate -- notice that word, this is NOT proven -- that this might be Lydia SHIVER found in the 1850 census living in Lee Co. with the Griffin SMITH family...) 5. Samuel A. SHIVER, b. 1836 6. John SHIVER, b. 1840. They are found in Dooly Co. in 1830, and then in Lee Co. in 1840 and 1850. After that I lose them... (and the 1850 Lee Co. Census information is VERY confusing at best...) Next we have the Jacob Jr. line (as I like to call it), as it appears that this Jacob, b. 1789, who md. Sara Ann SWILLEY abt. 1809 is the son of Jacob and Darcus. I probably have census data around here to back this one up too, but don't seem to have it loaded in the computer yet (much to my chagrin). Their children were: 1. unknown SHIVER, sex unknown, died as an infant. 2. Nicholas SHIVER, b. 1813, md. (1) unknown, (2) Frances. 3. Jacob SHIVER III b. 1814, md. (1) unknown, (2) Catherine COOPER. 4. Samuel James Augustus SHIVER, b. 1815, md. Sarah Jane PRESTWOOD . 5. Gilley SHIVER, b. 1818, md. William Terry PRESTWOOD. 6. Abraham SHIVER, b. 1819, md. Minda or Minnie JOHNSON. 7. unknown SHIVER, sex unknown, died as an infant. 8. Mary SHIVER, b. 1823, marriage unknown. 9. Elizabeth SHIVER, b. 1828, md. Henry SNELLGROVE. This branch appears to be the AL branch. They are all in and around Dale and Pike Cos., and appeared to stay there. Also, does anyone have information on Sara Ann SWILLEY's parents? I suspect that her father was Nicholas SWILLEY, a man that appears in both the early SC records as well as the 1819 Dooly Co. land lottery right along with the SHIVERs. His notable accomplishment appears to be that he fought in the Revolution and the War of 1812, as he was allowed 4 draws in the lottery as opposed to the 2 granted War of 1812 vets. Given that Jacob and Sara's first son was named Nicholas and their second son was Jacob, I think this Jacob is in the right place. But alas, where does that leave the first Jacob, b. 1789 with the wife Mary and the 6 children in Lee Co., GA? I'm fairly certain he must belong to either John or James, since they have no "official" children tied to them. Since Dooly Co. records were destroyed, their early-1830 probate papers are unavailable to us, making it difficult to tie any of their children to them. Anyone have any ideas? Boy! I'm being rather long-winded this morning. Must be because I got up with the chickens and the kids are still asleep... allows me time to think clearly without having little ones asking for this and that... but I do love them! :-) Anyone feel free to respond to this if you have input. 1. [SHIVER] Farrell & Anna's lines (was RE: Shiver line)
    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. Farrell and Anna- It's SO good to hear from you Farrell! :-) I've been doing some more research on the Fleming branch recently (trying to sort out those daughters), and I've missed "hearing" from you on the list. I'm glad you found a new cousin (I can't imagine trying to figure out THAT relationship without the computer to do it for me!) LOL! I'm particularly interested in Fleming and Elizabeth's daughters, as they (of course), had children that married back into the SHIVER line. Henrietta (or Hetty) md. Mr. John A. DANIEL on 21 Jan 1844 in Pulaski Co., GA, right? They had Elizabeth, Debby Ann (who md. Faulton SHIVER), Harriet and Sarah. There may be more, I just can't find them in the 1870 census. It also appears that she may have married a second time to a Rev. J. H. McCULLERS. Do you have that? (I know, I know, now you have to dig out that genealogy stuff, huh!) :-) If Hetty wasn't Rev. McCULLERS wife, then I need to know if you know who was. I have an obit that says this: DEATH AND OBITUARY NOTICES FROM THE SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE, 1867-1878; Issue of July 29, 1874: "Mrs. Henrietta McCullers, wife of Rev. J. H. McCullers and daughter of Daniel and Eliza Shiver, was born in Pulaski county, Ga., and died at Morgan Calhoun county, Ga., May 3d 1874, aged about 49 years. She leaves a husband and ten children. J. R. Littlejohn." There weren't too many Hetty's in the SHIVER bunch and the age is pretty close, so I'm curious about this one. As far as I'm aware, no Daniel Shiver ever married an Eliza--they usually married Mentenas, and I suspect that (like another obit I have) Daniel was really the name of her first husband, not her father's name (which should have been listed as Fleming)... Does that make sense? Obits can really get twisted up if the person giving the information doesn't really know the family relationships. I have one in my line that states that my 3rd-g-grandmother's first husband was L. H. Shiver, when actually he was her son-in-law! I also have a daughter Jane for Fleming and Elizabeth. I have marriage information that states that a Jane SHIVER md. a James F. DANIEL on 3 Jun 1852 in Pulaski Co., GA. Is that Fleming & Elizabeth's Jane? If so, does anyone out there have any census data (or other) on their children, etc.? I also have to wonder if John A. and James F. DANIEL were brothers. We've never seen that happen before in this family, have we? I also have to wonder that if that were the case, was the mother of these boys a SHIVER? (Given this family's penchant for marrying their cousins...) Sorry for all these run-on sentences, but I've been dying to ask these questions for a while now, and I'm thinking as I write... Oh! And also, Lyrice and I (and apparently Laverne Calloway) have come to the conclusion that Axiom CALHOUN was NOT Elizabeth's father, but more likely her brother. In his probate papers he leaves his estate to what looks like his siblings. He died about 1831 and in the 1830 census he appears to be unmarried and too young to be Elizabeth's father. From earlier probate records that Axiom was the administrator on, it looks like their father was John C. CALHOUN (same name as the one-time governor of South Carolina; is that coincidence or is there a relationship there?). I have some information on John C.'s probate here somewhere... (And I don't even have the excuse of having moved!) :-) Well, I'll draw this novel to an end. I hope all of you have a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving! Be grateful for those SHIVER ancestors that lived their lives in such a way that we have been blessed. (Besides, they gave us all something to do in hunting them down!) :-) Mary Kathryn -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@attglobal.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ South King Co. Gene. 1. [SHIVER] Fleming & Manning brothers?
    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. One other thing (I just noticed it!).... Anna - What proof do you have that Fleming and Manning were brothers? Was it Fleming's estate administration? I believe as you do that Manning, Fleming (and Ransom and Enoch) were most likely brothers, as they seem to be wrapped up extensively in each other's business, but I don't have any real solid documentation of that. Do you? Also, who do you believe to be the father of these boys? I know I have seen it around (and at one time speculated myself) that it was John, son of John & Hannah, but I have revised that theory in favor of James (though I haven't had the guts to enter it into the computer that way yet! <vbg>). Lyrice found (and I have since studied it as well) a newspaper article stating that Enoch (this is Lyrice's and my line) applied for letters of administration on the estate of James in Dooly Co. in 1831. A man named Alfred applied for the same on the estate of John. If Enoch was John's oldest son (and he would have been considerably older than Alfred who from what I could see was barely 18), then why would he apply for LOA for his uncle? Doesn't make sense to me... It also appears that there were two Alfreds, both about the same age, and both with wives named Sarah. One in Lee Co., GA and the other in Dale Co., AL at the same time in the census. Children have similar but different names... Anyone know the relationship there or whose children they were? I speculate the one in AL was John's son all right, as in 1850 Dale Co. census John's widow, Lydia is living with him. OK, OK, I'll quit with all the questions... Everybody feel free to jump in anytime! :-) Mary Kathryn -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@attglobal.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ South King Co. Gene. Their (supposed) son: Samuel James Augustus Shiver (1825-1912) married Sarah Jane Prestwood (1828-1896) Their daughter Nancy Loucretia Shiver (1860-1912) married Robert Monroe Chancey (1853-1909) Their daughter Miriam Frances Chancey (1880-1958) married Levi Arthur Spear (1871-1952) Their daughter Mary Ruby Spear (1898-1985) married Henry Bertie Somers (1892-1972) Their daughter Mary Lois Somers (1928 - ) married Austin Leroy Martin (1927-1992) Their son James Dale Martin (1961 - ) is my husband! 3. Tracy - Just a quick question (OK, maybe more than one! <g>) on Isaac's family... Here goes: So it appears that Issac was married previously (I have first to Evaline G. DENSON on 30 May 1839 in Pulaski Co., GA and 2nd to Mary Ann Caroline BURCH in 1849/1850 time frame, I'm guessing in Pulaski or somewhere near as well?). It also appears that he and your Margaret Dorinda were divorced, is that right? Since they are separately listed in 1870 (or could she have just been visiting Mom and Dad that day?), I wondered about this. When was Isaac born and when did he die? Can I get copies of the census records that you have for Hamilton Co., FL? I don't have those and would love to include them in my database (for Isaac and Margaret -- all records). I'll get them up on the site on a separate page for Isaac and Margaret as well when I do get them. I'm fascinated about Eugenia too. Is she a daughter of Margaret's from a marriage previous to Isaac then? Or was she a daughter of Isaac's? I'm confused... (what a surprise, huh?) :-) Can you fill me in? 2. Shirley Shiver
    3. Hi, everyone. Our line descends from Abner Bartlet Shiver, who, we think, is a son of Jacob, son of John and Hannah (Clemons) Shiver. 1. James Louis Shiver m 12 Dec 1957 Shirley Faye Turner, dau of Paul Thomas & Hallie Susan (Goodman) Turner. 2. Louis James Shiver (b 1888) m 28 Dec 1920 Bertha Lillian Dunn (b 1905)dau of William James and Cora Jane (Bell) Dunn. 3. A. Marion Shiver (b 1854) m 23 Dec 1884 Mary/Mollie King (b 1859) dau of William R. and Siby Ann King 4. Abner Bartlet Shiver (b 1819) m 20 Jun 1841 Mary Johnson (b 1826) dau of William F. and Elizabeth Johnson IF we are correct in naming Abner as a son of Jacob, son of John and Hannah, I believe it was by a reported "unknown" wife. Abner's bible records the birth and parentage of a Mary Johnson (NOT the Mary Johnson he married) as such: Mary Johnson (b 7 Apr 1789) dau of Rheuben and Lamender Johnson. This Mary's age is right to be Abner's mother, and, Abner named one of his daughters Lamender. Shirley Turner Shiver

    1. [SHIVER] Isaac Shiver line (son of Abraham)
    2. Mary K and list-- Here is my line from Isaac Shiver, son of Abraham. Thanks to Drexel Shiver, Dee Bennett and Tina Golden Zipperer we have put together some information. 1) John William Shiver and Hannah Clemmons (?) 2) Abraham Shiver and Martha (?) 3) Isaac Shiver and Margaret Dorinda Cross (not Cook), daughter of Dixon T. Cross and Rachel McNeese Cross of Hamilton County, Florida. They were married on September 13, 1857 in Hamilton County, Fl according to marriage index records at the courthouse which Darrell Bell located. NOTE: Margaret is listed with Isaac in the 1860 census of Hamilton County, Fl with his children by other marriages and a daughter, Eugenia. In 1870 Hamilton County Census, Isaac is listed without Margaret and has 3 children. A cousin of mine descending from Margaret Cross' second marriage located Margaret with her parents, Dixon and Rachel Cross. Her 3 brothers are listed as well as 2 children, Lougenia (eugenia)-age 11 and Virginia age 4. In the 1880 census, Margaret is listed with her second husband, Robert Beville. Information from Tina Golden Zipperer, descendant of Eugenia Shiver, has that she married Benjamin Franklin Zipperer abt 1880 . Therefore she is not listed with her mother and step-father. Virginia is listed as Emma V. Shiver, age 14 listed as Robert's stepdaughter. 4) Emma Virginia Shiver (Jennie) born December 15, 1865. She married John Elbert Crawford on July 2, 1885 in Jackson County, Florida. Jennie died Oct 22, 1939 in Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida. 5) Henry Leon Crawford married Mattie E. Spears, daughter of William Walcott and Amanda Eubanks Spears of Wakulla County, Florida. 6) Henry Lewis Crawford married Clarice Virginia Andrews, daughter of Joe Mitchell and Ruby Green Andrews of Wakulla County, Florida. 7) Thomas Leonard Crawford married Rebecca Sue Lowe, daughter of James Ellison and Lucy Hammer Lowe. 8) Tracie Lynn Crawford--unmarried at this time. I would be glad to share with anyone this information we have gathered. Would love to know more information on Jennie and Eugenia and their relationship with the Shiver family or anything else we can get on this line. Contact me for any more information. Tracie Crawford

    3. Hello all! :-) Just wanted to send out a message and ask everyone if they could resubmit their lines. It's been a while, and we need to get some activity going on the list. One special favor though. I would REALLY like you to stress your collateral lines. If you know maiden names for women, please give them. If you know their parents, please give those as well. In doing some research in SC/GA/AL/FL, I'm constantly amazed at how often these families traveled together and intermarried (what a surprise among the SHIVER clan, eh?)! ;-) Speaking of that research, I'm in the process of extracting collateral names from the 1850 census in SW GA at the moment. Hope to get those on the web site soon. Also am going to take a HARD look at 1840 Dale Co., AL (and other surrounding counties) and see where all those SHIVER families are hiding. Anyone already done this? Anyway, I have a feeling that for some of us trying to trace either John or James' lines (sons of John & Hannah) that we are going to have to trace these collateral lines extensively to try and tease out who belonged to who. There are the PAYNEs, the PRESTWOODs, the SWILLEYs, the COXes, the SULLIVANs, JOHNSONs, CALHOUNs, etc., and then there are possibilities of FLEMING, MANNING, and others. Has anyone got any conclusive evidence of Hannah's maiden name? I've seen all the conjecture, but does anyone have PROOF? I'm dying to know where those CLEMMONS (CLEMENTS, CLEMONS, CLEMON, etc.) families are in SC that she was supposed to be a part of. Anyone know? Just thought I'd see if I could get any bites! ;-) (Just be sure they aren't too big out of me, k? <vbg>) Mary Kathryn -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@attglobal.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ South King Co.
