    1. [SHIVER] A question of Ransom or Brinson
    2. Kenneth Shiver
    3. Here's another topic of discussion. Was it Ransom or Brinson or has anyone come accross the family name of Brinson? My grandfather was named Charles Brinson Shiver (Called Brinson). I haven't never known why or the origin of the name. I looked at the census records (orginals) and the handwritten entry could be interpreted as Brinson. Or since Alexander (child of Brinson/Ransom father of Charles Brinson) was fatherless at a very early age and probably not very literate is Brinson a corruption of Ransom. More questions. I am getting a hold of my uncle to get the details of the genetics question and will post in a few days.

    3. Kenneth - I too am interested in the genetic condition among the SHIVERs. I have my Bach. of Science in Zoology, and genetics was one of my particular favorites. Up to this point I had figured that the gene pool must have been pretty resilient, since I hadn't heard of any disorders and there didn't seem to be a particularly high infant mortality rate (higher than normal anyway). Could you find out more about that? I'd love to hear it. I'm in one of the few lines where I can't trace back to more than one SHIVER, but I know there are lots of people on the list who can. Take care! (And I'd love to have the additional information on Alexander's children for my database!) 3. Gail - The Love/Nettles thing is used because we have been told (purely heresay mind you) that Dedemiah's maiden name was LOVE and NETTLES. If you have information on the NETTLES family in GA (or in Kershaw Co., S.C.) we'd sure love to see it, since it might help us (by other names used by the family or whatever) to decide if this was indeed her maiden name. We have also been told that the Sarah that married Manning SHIVER (Sr.) and the Dedemiah that married Enoch (my ancestor and Lyrice's) were sisters. If that turns out to be true, then we'll know BOTH of their surnames! :-) If you can help us out, let us know! :-) Mary Kathryn -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@attglobal.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ South King Co. 3. John - Jim Swailes copied Ransom's entire estate and when I get back home (I'm at my mom's for the Thanksgiving holiday; I'll get home later today, but have other commitments -- I'll get to it as soon as I can), I'll type up the entire estate and attach it to Ransom's page on the web site. It will also be included in the Master and Shiver Text File pages. Then you can look at the whole thing! You and all of Ransom's other descendants! :-) Mary Kathryn -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@attglobal.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ South King Co. Gene. 2. Hi group, With all the activities this weekend I must have missed the message that mentions a genetic condition that may exist due to the Shiver intermarriage. If the originator of the message would send it to me i would be very grateful. I am also interested in this condition and what it is called. For Mary and Lyrice, I have been trying to figure out are relationship to each other. I also descend from Enoch Shiver, but have become totally confused and cannot figure out what cousins we may be. Can you help?????? Linda Happy Holidays

    1. [SHIVER] Estate of Ransom Shiver
    2. Found this in Shiver papers in Albany Library in 1995. Didn't copy everything down as it was like a kid in candy store. However, here is drift of data: Ransom Shiver Estate Index Fileon Said Estate Dougherty Co, GA Office of the Ordinary Oct 54 Warren Shiver was Administrator and overseer. Named as a minor was Green Shiver. It appears that estate was pretty well off. Includes receipts for tuition payment to Michael J. Horn for Manning, Henry, Anthony, Green, Jackson. Named a son-in-law, William H. Slappey (Slappey Drive in Albany ???). He grew cotton, tobacco, corn and hogs. Also had receipts for purchase of shoes for the children and for such things as coffee or whatever wasn't produced on the farm. Interesting as to why it was in that county? Does anyone have the full data on this? I'm afraid that by now some of the papers in those file drawers may have "disappeared," as often is the case.

    1. [SHIVER] Shiver Intermarraige
    2. Kenneth Shiver
    3. My uncle who is a doctor also suspects the intermarraige based on medical grounds. Some of the Shiver's had a genetic medical condition that is usually only associated with marrying your cousins. If I get a chance I will get more specifics from him. I have good records birthdates and some deaths of all of Alexander's children if anyone is interested. Kenneth kcshiver@ix.netcom.com

    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. Kenneth - Welcome to the group! I just want to make a caution though about posting personal information on a mailing list. All the postings to our list are archived. I have a policy on my web site that I don't post anyone's information if they were born after 1900, unless they died years ago. I do appreciate your information though, as I only have pretty sketchy information on Alexander's children (based on the census data I've been able to collect). I show a first marriage for Alexander to Elizabeth "Liddy" SHIVER, daughter of John SHIVER & Mary SHIVER. They were married about 1873 (prob. in Worth Co.) and had two children: Martha "Mattie", Oct 1875 in Worth Co., GA and Warren Judson SHIVER, b. 13 Oct 1877 in Worth Co., GA (d. 28 Mar 1942). Elizabeth "Liddy" (SHIVER) SHIVER, died some time before 1885 when Alexander remarried. I suspect she must have died sometime shortly after Warren Judson died, as there most likely would have been more children born before he remarried. Also, just so you know, Alexander was probably actually born in Irwin or Worth Co., Georgia. Alexander was born in 1854 (before Mitchell Co. was actually formed), and Ransom is found in the 1850 Irwin Co. census and his widow Sarah is found in the 1860 Worth Co. Census. From what I know of that family, they didn't live in Mitchell Co. John Arden Shiver was correct. We assume at this time that Ransom, Enoch, Fleming and Manning SHIVER were brothers. The John SHIVER who was the father of Alexander's first wife was the son of Fleming SHIVER. Given the SHIVER propensity for marrying first cousins, this only adds to the validity of our assumption (in my mind anyway! <g>). I would change this next week if I found more information. Problem is that most of these men lived in Dooly Co., GA in the pre-1850 years and those records were destroyed by fire or flood (I forget) for that period. Lyrice Shiver McCranie (another Enoch descendant and also a member of the list) and I are operating on the premise (for the moment) that Ransom, Enoch, Manning and Fleming were the sons of James and Elizabeth SHIVER (son of John & Hannah of Kershaw Co., SC). She found a newspaper article in a neighboring county for an application in Dooly Co. in 1831 for letters of administration by Enoch SHIVER on the estate of James SHIVER (who was only probably in his early 50s and obviously died without a will). If only we could find those estate papers (who purchased the estate, etc.) we could maybe make a more definitive link. For the moment, this is all we have to go on. It was thought for a while that they were the sons of John, but a man named Alfred SHIVER applied for LOA on his estate in 1833, and the two Alfreds I am aware of were considerably younger than all four of the above brothers. I would think that the older boys would have applied for the LOA, as opposed to the baby of the family... John's also right that if we can't confuse you, then nobody can! :-) Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Just so you know, you and I are very close in age. I have 3 small children (actually not so small, they are all VERY tall for their ages), ages 4, 6 and 8. (Actually the younger two are almost 5 and 7). I've been working on my family history off and on for almost 20 years! You're doing wonderfully! :-) Let me know what you have on the above questions. I want to make sure that my database is correct on these families. Great to meet another cousin! 1. [SHIVER] The lines of Ransome and Alexander Shiver
    2. Kenneth Shiver
    3. At Mary's Request here is my current stab at my family tree. I am Kenneth Charles Shiver and I live in Carrollton, Georgia with my wife and 11 month old son. I became interested in Genealogy after ROOTS and my maternal grandmother's interest in her family tree. At that time, I asked my faternal grandmother Lillie Mae Meadows Shiver to write down everything that she knew about our family history. Using that information I have tied things back to Ransome Shiver of Sylvester, Georgia (Isabella) and I have strong suspicions that I am related to the Shiver's of Kershaw County, SC. Attached is my Shiver Line. Note Mary Elizabeth Williams Shiver was adopted by the Shiver's of Camelia, Georgia as a child (she was Alexander's second wife). Everything back to Alexander is from my grandmother (and verified via census and other records). The connection to Ransome and Kershaw county is based on census information. I would appreciate any additions or comments, I have a good deal more information on Mary Williams Shiver from a personal letter! she wrote detailing her life if anyone is interested. I also have more info on the Children of Alexander Shiver, but I haven't recorded it in family tree maker. Descendants of Ransome //Ranson or Brinson// Shiver Generation No. 1 1. 1. Re: [SHIVER] The lines of Ransome and Alexander Shiver
    2. One of the mysteries we are working on - and I'm not making much progress after 25 years, is, which one of the Shiver brothers was the father of Ransom? My lineage to that goes through Anthony Shiver, who was my great grandfather, and is buried at Old Bethel Cem vic Isabella. When I asked my Dad his grandfather Shiver's name many years ago, and he told me Anthony, I thought he must be wrong as Anthony wasn't a Shiver name and beside that, it had never appeared before. So, Anthony must have come from the line of his mother. I would say that you have a good start, and you can go to Mary K. Kozy's rootsweb site and get a lot of family data. Jeff Foxworthy was speaking of our family, when he said that Rednecks go to family reunions to look for girls! My Uncle Loyd Shiver, from Camilla married Anthony's dau, Ann Safire Shiver. There were 6 children in Uncle Loyd's family (I think), and 5 of them married Shivers. Uncle Loyd descends from Enoch's line, and we believe that Enoch was brother to Ransom. Mary Kozy's site is: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ Good luck. You have come to the right place. If we can't confuse you, nobody can!

    3. Hello: Do any of you on here connect into a line of Shivers who had a son named: John H. Shivers who eloped to Turner County GA with Bessie Cothran to marry. They married while living in Worth County, GA. Bessie Cothran the daughter of Ovid Dunlap Cothran and Zona Almeda Entriken of Carroll County, GA (prior to Worth) Ovid and Zona were married Oct. 21, 1900 in Carroll County, GA and had five of their six chidren born in Carroll County, GA. Number six being born in Worth County where Ovid ran the Cotten Gin Mill. Bessie was the only daugher to live, her sister younger than herself had fallen down a well as a very young child and died. In Carroll County, GA I believe. They lived in Cloverdale in Worth County, GA. Bessie and John H. Shivers married Oct. 8, 1921 in Turner County, GA by Justice of the Peace J. W. Bellflower. Soon after this John H. Shivers and Ovid Dunlap Cothran stepped on board the Coastline train and went to Avon Park, Florida, where they sought out an old family friend named Nathan Wesley Newton. Who at age 14 was the chief man of the new Consolidated Land Company and Navel Stores Canning Plant. He gave them both jobs and soon they sent for the rest of the family. Bessie Cothran Shivers joined her new husband along with her Mother and siblings soon after. In Florida they then had three children: A daughter and two sons I have this information but some are still living and don't want to post this open just yet. If anyone on this list knows of this line please contact me there are cousins who would love to meet you.
