HOUSTON COUNTY, GEORGIA CENSUS, 1900 Created from "Indian Territory" in 1821, Houston County, Georgia is located in the central part of the state. This database is a collection of federal census records from the county in 1900. Each record provides the individual's name, relationship to head of household, race, sex, month and year of birth, marital status, and parents' birthplaces. Additionally, many entries indicate the number of children born to the parents and the number still living. It contains the names of nearly 22,500 residents. For those seeking ancestors from turn of the century Georgia, this can be a useful source of information. Bibliography: Jeffery, Alice, ed. "1900 Houston County, Georgia Census." Am going through phone books and sending out letters to most of the Shivers in SE Alabama Counties in hopes of getting some new blood in the group, and maybe helping some of these people discover their roots. However, do not plan to send one to "Girlie." In the letter am putting the address for this site. Have already sent out about 10 so hopefully we'll get a response or two before long.

OK, now don't get TOO excited! :-) I actually was only able to get the appraisals of property, and the 1856 returns typed up tonight. I still have the 1859 returns to do. I will try to do those tomorrow some time. You can access these papers from Ransom's group sheet at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/Shiver_files/ransshiv.html or from the Shiver Text File page at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/text_files/shivfile.html. Just look in the "R"s. Kenneth - I think I've solved part of your BRINSON problem. Note that one of the merchants that Ransom traded with regularly (and who is mentioned extensively in the estate accounts) was an N. P. BRINSON. Often children were named after good friends and admired acquaintances, as well as after other family members. It is still possible of course that there was some sort of familial connection there, but there doesn't always have to be... Just for everyone else's information, I have also typed up the royal land grant for John Shiver of Kershaw Co., SC. It can be accessed either from his family group page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/Shiver_files/johnshiv.html or from the Shiver Text File page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/text_files/shivfile.html. Again, just look in the "R"s. Enjoy! Mary Kathryn -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@attglobal.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ South King Co. Gene. C. T. - Is this Eli SHIVERS (with an "S") listed in the Houston Co., GA census in 1850? I think this may be a different family. I saw that record while I was transcribing the collateral SHIVER lines from that census a few weeks ago. Can any of the SHIVERS researchers on the list clear this one up? They seemed to mix right in there! :-) Mary Kathryn -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@attglobal.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ South King Co. Gene. Jimmy - I think I have responded to you on this before, but it is my belief (and I think it is backed up with some "evidence") that the children listed on the 1850 Dale Co., AL census are NOT Elijah's children. They appear to be his brother Daniel's children, based on Abraham Shiver's will, which lists a Leweezer (Louisa) and Mentena (Mentney) as children of Daniel's (deceased). Daniel died around 1833, his wife (from information I have seen) died around 1835, thus leaving their two youngest children orphaned. My assumption is that Elijah and his wife Nancy took them in and raised them. The only children I have so far for Elijah and Nancy are your Amanda who md. Joshua LEE and Jane who md. Uriah BRACEWELL. Does anyone else concur with this (or disagree strenuously)? And if so, can you tell me what you base your conclusions on? These families really are tricky to figure out, and sometimes we have to go on conjecture and "gut-level" feelings... Thanks! Linda - The two SHIVERs that you mentioned from the same company were my 3rd-g-grandfather, John W. SHIVER, son of Enoch (also Lyrice's ancestor), and Fleming is probably (though I'm not 100% positive), Henry Fleming SHIVER, son of Fleming SHIVER and Elizabeth CALHOUN. Farrell - Do you know more about that Fleming? Thanks for the additional list. If anyone knows more about these men's service records (dates of service, wounds received, etc.), can you forward them to me and I'll make sure they get attached to their names on their pages on the web site? I'm PROMISING a major update between now and January 1st. I've been SO far behind on SO many things, and I'm figuring that since I've been sick the last 2-1/2 weeks, that I won't get sick over the Christmas holiday. Kenneth - Everything I have ever seen has his name shown as Ransom. There are some people who have interpreted some census records as Ranson, but then I don't put much stock in census records (unless its the only thing I have!) for things like the spelling of names. I usually look for other records, like marriage records, birth/death records, pensions or wills/probates and court records. Also, Enoch named a son Ransom, I'm assuming after his brother (not a proven relationship yet, just highly suspected!)... I'm going to type up that Ransom estate this evening if I have a chance, and I'll be sure to post a message to the list with the address of the page and the link when I do. It is always possible that Brinson was a corruption of Ransom, but then if he was actually called Brinson, I doubt it. It's also possible that it was a name used in one of the matriarchal lines that we just haven't run across yet... Ransom seems to be a fairly popular Southern name. I've run across it in the process of doing other extractions of Georgia records etc., so it may have just been "the fashion" then (sort of like Jared and McKenzie are now... <vbg>). It could also have been a surname (as we suspect that Manning and Fleming were). No telling at this point! :-) Mary Kathryn -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@attglobal.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ South King Co. Gene. Here is a note sent to me on a local list by Mark Howells (the husband of Cyndi Howells of "Cyndi's List" and a VERY active internet genealogist in his own right) re: Kindred Konnections, an internet-based company that has been sending out spam (unsolicited advertising or junk e-mail) about their genealogical services. Read on, and buyer beware! Mary Kathryn ********************** Hi all - Loathe though I am to encourage KindredKonnections with a monetary reward, it seemed only fair to "put my money where my mouth is" when warning others about KK's unethical business practices and mis-leading advertising. So I joined up for a brief trial of their services. This e-mail describes what I found and documented. To summarize, the information which KK had available in its database DID NOT MATCH the subject line which they sent to me as unsolicited commercial spam. They had plenty of my surname, but not in Wales and certainly not in Penmark as implied by the subject line of their spam. This is "baiting" customers at its most crude. It is tragic that the thousands of volunteer hours put into the surnames web pages are being exploited for the monetary gain of an enterprise selling a service of dubious value. Please feel free to pass this information along to others who may have received KK's spam. =`=`=`=`=`=`=`=`=`=`= Since I had received an e-mail from feedback@kindredkonnections.com titled: "DEERE from 1796 to 1900 in Penmark ,Wales." <my research interests lifted by KK directly from the voluntarily-hosted Glamorgan surnames web page of GENUKI>. The advertisement further stated: "DEERE from 1796 to 1900. We show there are 105 DEEREs in the Ancestral Archive Index at http:// "<remainder of URL snipped as they don't deserve additional advertising> it seemed fair that I search KindredKonnections for the DEERE surname located in Penmark, Wales in 1796 in order to see what I got as a result. =`=`=`=`=`=`=`=`=`=`= I did a search of their "Ancestral Archive Index" for the surname DEERE occurring in the year 1796. Here's what I got back: 83 instances of DEERE from 1796 - of which: 31 were double counted (same record returned twice) - leaving 52 actual "hits"; Of the 52 hits, 9 were either mis-directed links, completely blank pedigrees, or "files not found" - leaving 43 "hits"; Of the 43 "hits", 30 contained NO location information at all (in other words, no information on the place where a birth, marriage, death occurred) - leaving 13 "hits"; Of these 13 DEEREs which had location information, only ONE WAS EVEN FROM WALES; NONE of the results returned were from Penmark, Wales at all. =`=`=`=`=`=`=`=`=`=`= If you have been solicited by KindredKonnections, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. Chances are excellent that KK does not actually have any information regarding your surnames in the times and places of your interests. If you find this sort of mis-leading advertising based on the unethical commercial exploitation of volunteer resources on the Internet to be worthy of complaint, you may wish to bring KK's activities to the attention of the following organizations: KindredKonnections' e-mail address is - feedback@kindredkonnections.com KK's Internet Service Provider (whose acceptable use policy prohibits spam) is - abuse@inconnect.com The State of Utah's Division of Consumer Protection (KK is a Utah-based company) accepts consumer complaints of mis-leading advertising and unethical business practices at - commerce@br.state.ut.us - Mark ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ markhow@oz.net -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@attglobal.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ South King Co. I am looking for information on the Elijah Shiver family that were living in Dale County Alabama in the mid 1800's. They came to Alabama from Georgia. I think that they may have come from Pulaski County. Does anyone know the names of Elijah's and Nancy's children. I have the names listed on the 1850 Dale Census, but I think that there were some older ones not listed. Thank You Jimmy Davis

I will tell this story again, in case some of you missed it before. There is a book on 2nd Ga and Capt John M Shiver ended up as its commander at end of war. He was from Barnesville, GA area before the war, an area famous for making buggies. After the war he went to Americus, where the family later had a lumber co and for years there was a Dick Shiver there on the radio. Anyhow, John M ws on in years before he was married. He died when his only child, a son, was still an infant. They buried him in his uniform and the only thing that his son had to go by, as far as his father, was a photo of him in uniform. When the boy was in his 30's his mother died. As had been her wish, the grave was opened and she was buried in the coffin with her husband. When asked by someone at this undertaking, how he thought his father looked? Hs reply was classic, "About like I thought he would."
