John, trust me its there. I have photos of the graves if your email accepts attacments. The settlement used to called Jack Springs and even now the cemetary is many times referred to as the Jack Springs Cemetary. I have a lot of info on the old town of McCullough including the Shiver store if your email accepts attachments. Bill: I tend to agree with you RE: Catherine Cooper. I had her birth as abt 1831 re the 1850/1860 Coffee County Census. Catherine was: age19 on 18 Oct 1850; and age 28 on 3 Sep 1860. Yes, Catherine is buried at McCullough and is my great great great grandmother. Her daughter, Mary Salany Elizabeth Shiver married John Gilbert Hall and all three are buried together. Her son Samuel is buried next to her. Several of John and Mary's children are buried around them. I have a photo of Catherine as well as Mary and John. My mom said her library does something called interlibrary loan with libraries across the country. You might want to ask some of your regional libraries if they do too. If so, and Troy does it, you might could get the book that way. However, she warned that since it is a reference book, they might not send it, or if they do you might have to look at it in the library, as with other reference books. Also, some libraries charge a fee to cover their expenses in getting the book. I was at a small cemetery in McCullough, Alabama earlier today, and found the following Shiver headstones: John T. Shiver Lulu V. Shiver Jan 24, 1897 March 21, 1897 Jan 26, 1968 June 7, 1960 Father Mother Thomas J. Shiver Mary P. Shiver Feb 17, 1862 Nov 10, 1869 Mar 17, 1948 March 5, 1947 Catherine Shiver This headstone was in the Hall section of the cemetery. 1830 - 1927 I believe Catherine Shiver was Catherine May Cooper, daughter of Samuel Cooper and Mary Prestwood. Catherine was the second wife of Jacob Shiver III, and the birth and death years are correct for her. I know that the Cain book says that she died in Dale County, and is buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Rockyhead, Ala. but I've found that Cain's batting average isn't that great! If one of her daughters married a Hall, it could explain why she was there in that section. Can anyone identify these Shivers, and confirm my thoughts about Catherine? Bill Cassady
Hey Anna and Shirley, I live in Valdosta too - I didn't know you were living here as well, Anna. If you would like to give me a call, I'm listed in phone book under Owen McCranie at 247-9792. Would love to hear from you. And Shirley - if you plan on a trip to Huxford Library, you will be going through Valdosta - Give me a call!!! And to anyone else who plans to be in Valdosta, please come to see me - would love to meet all my "cousins"!! Happy Holidays to all! Lyrice
Jim (and the LIST!): Strange how these names keep popping up. Your first reference below - author Erma BAGGETT - really leaped out at me. Abner's son, William Riley, had a daughter, Jeanette Anna who married Homer Colesta BAGGETT. Same family? Gotta be! I'm going to try and get together with Trudy GREEN and Midge STONE (maiden name: GILBERT,daus of Lilla (GILBERT) SHIVER>dau of Marion SHIVER> son of Abner B. SHIVER) and Jennie (JONES) LERCH, (dau of Leon JONES>son of Elmedia (SHIVER) JONES>dau of Marion SHIVER, etc) for a research trip sometime in March. We were looking for destinations. I think the Troy Public Library just made the list. (We're also planning on hitting the Creek Indian College in S.W. Georgia [for some data on the elusive William R. King], and the Huxford Library at Homerville.) To all the LIST: My best wishes for a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY and FRUITFUL NEW YEAR. May the coming new millennium knock down all those "brick walls"; may lost records be miraculously recovered (and hand delivered personally to YOU), and may we finally link all these SHIVER'S together! To my geneology friends: I just wanted to send holiday greetings to everyone who has helped me with my geneology. Some of you took the time to write me back after a query even though it wasn't the same line, which is so helpful, and others gave me more information than I ever would have believed. I tried to reply to everyone who wrote me to say thanks, but if I missed anyone, thanks to everyone who took the time to write me. Since geneology buffs usually only take the time to talk geneology, I also thought I'd tell you a little about myself, since I am constantly trying to imagine the people I am corresponding with. I am 25 years old, live in Valdosta, and I work as a social worker with people who have mental retardation. I also live with my boyfriend (whose computer I have basically taken over) and we provide a home for a young man with mental retardation and mental illness. So if you were wondering why I disappear from geneology for months at a time... Challenging and time-consuming just barely scratch the surface when describing my life, but it is so rewarding that it is worth it. And lots of fun as well. A lot of people forget about that part of human services, but I go to dances with my consumers and boogie down. Our roommate also has a penchant for loud rock and roll, playing pool and darts, and loves to travel, which fits into my lifestyle perfectly. We have a blast! My main hobby is playing on the computer, when I can, since we stick pretty close to the house most of the time. This includes geneology, of course, but also looking up anything and everything that strikes my fancy, currently I'm really into looking at camper vans and dreaming of being on the road seeing America (if I win the lottery). Some of you know this already, but my mother, a librarian, got me into geneology as a teenager, and every year we go on a research trip together. This year we went to Augusta, GA which was just great. I found a lot of information, mostly on my Cliatt line. I think geneology trips are wonderful, and I highly recommend it. Plus they are very cheap as you are usually staying in small towns, and libraries and cemeteries are still free!! Well, that's enough of my holiday ramblings. I am so glad I made contact with each and every one of you! Have a Great Holiday Season, and May All Your Geneology Wishes Come True!! Love, Anna Mitchell Currently researching the Cliatt, Mitchell, Burtz, Shiver and their associated families. ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Homestead is a nice little town. All of our family grew up there. The mayor, Steve Shiver is not related to this line of Shiver's.(James A) What lineage does he have? I will ask him whenever I get down there next March. I think he is from another state. I have met him before. As far as I know, he is not a cousin.
