    2. Kenneth, Your great grandfather and my great grandfather were brothers, as mine was Anthony, a Civil War soldier, who is buried in Old Bethel Cem in Worth County. Ransom was my gr gr grandfather, but woe is me, I don't know who my gr gr gr grandfather was -- still waiting for someone smarter than me to figure it out as I have about exhausted all avenues, plus a few well paid so called researchers in Atlanta and Salt Lake City. So far I haven't found any of them to be worth their salt! l

    1. [SHIVER] Viruses on Rootsweb's lists? NOT!
    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. Hello listmembers! Just wanted to sent a message out to everyone on my various Rootsweb genealogy lists and tell you that you can relax about viruses being transmitted on these lists. Some listowners who don't understand exactly how Rootsweb works have panicked when they have gotten an e-mail with what appears to be (though none of them have opened it) a virus attachment. It is called "pirate.exe", and I'm sure before the ol' clock ticks over on 1 Jan 2000, we will hear of many more. Please don't panic about this. I've heard that there are some listowners who have had lots of "unsub" messages lately... Rootsweb does not allow attachments to go through its lists, and so they are automatically bounced to the listowner (and usually with an attachment on the subject that says {not a subscriber}). All we have to do at that point is delete them. I generally take a look at them, just in case it is someone on the list trying to send a GEDCOM or a picture file, so that I can let them know that this is not possible. Generally, the message is also sent back to the individual who sent it letting them know that they cannot send attachments. So, don't worry about getting a virus from your Rootsweb lists. Just be extra vigilant over the next few weeks (and always, really) to NOT open any attachments (particularly ".exe" and ".zip" ones) that you were not expecting. You almost can't go by the maxim to "not open it unless you know the person", since they are getting sophisticated enough now that worms are being sent back out from infected computers to people in their address books. So it may have a "here's the stuff you wanted" kind of subject and may be from someone you know. As long as you don't open the attachment, it can't hurt you, and you can always just let it sit and pop an e-mail off to the sender asking if they really DID send you something! I've even gotten to the point where I don't open cutesy little "Christmas messages" or "Year 2000" animated gifs because I don't have the time and don't want to risk anything. Silly I suppose, but I have yet to be infected with a virus or worm either! :-) (Now... where's the wood again to knock on?) Hope this has been helpful (though long-winded) and that you all have a wonderful Christmas and a virus-free 2000! 3. Just a quick note... I notice that in Abraham's will, where he lists the children of Daniel (who predeceased him by over 10 years, and left a widow with 5 small children, she then died a few years later from what I can gather) as: Item. To ABRAHAM SHIVER, HETTY SHIVER, LEWIZER SHIVER, JEFFERSON SHIVER, and MENTRY SHIVER, the children of DANIEL SHIVER, deceased, five dollars, divided between them in addition to what they have already received. This item in Abraham's will seems to indicate that Daniel had a son Abraham. Given the penchant that those in the South have for giving their children two names and then using the middle one, I wonder if this could be James A(braham?) Shiver? He would have been born about the right time (1830) or so... Also, this item in Abraham's will is also the basis for my previous statements that the two girls, age 17 and 19, listed with Elijah SHIVER in Dale Co., AL in 1850 were not his children at all, but Daniel's girls, who he and his wife Nancy raised after Daniel and Mentena died. (Anyone else reached the same conclusion here?) Mary Kathryn -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@attglobal.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ South King Co. Gene. 3. Linda - Is it James Abraham (son of Daniel and Mentena Shiver), who md. Jane Shiver (dau. of Bonaparte) that you are talking about? The information I have says that his name was Abraham, but maybe I got that from you? ;-) I'm guessing Abraham, since his grandpa's name was Abraham. No proof here either, since it's a long way from my line... Mary K. -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@attglobal.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ South King Co. Gene. 1. [SHIVER] Sending pics to the list...
    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. Sorry guys. Wish it was so, but to prevent various and sundry viruses being distributed through Rootsweb's mailing lists, attachments are not allowed on their lists. I know it would be a quicker solution, but unfortunately Dan, you're going to have to just get everyone's e-mail addresses that want them and do a mass mailing. But aren't we all excited that someone has pictures! I have received some of Manning and Elizabeth as well as of some of their descendants and plan to get those up on the web site over the Christmas break. Be looking for an announcement to the list concerning the web page enhancements! :-) Happy Holidays!
