Being everyone is so quiet, thought I would put up one of the old letters from my file and this was dated June 14, 1982, from the late D.E. Cain, Sr, who lived in Enterprise, AL, about 20 miles from my home. We never met. At top of this letter is handwritten: Jane Shiver Wingate, Daughter of Gussie W. Davis, lives in Headland. Headland is just north of Dothan. Dear Mr. Shiver: I am doing some research on the Shiver and Prestwood familys. Here I might mention here that the Shiver and Prestwood familys have inter married into each others familys ever sense they all lived in Wilkinson County, Georgia. We have traced the Shivers and the Prestwoods farther back than in Wilkinson County, Georgia. In fact they come to this country from Germany. They first settled in the Isle of Wight County, Virginia (he has us confused with the early Shivers family), before they findly settled down in Coffee, Dale and Pike County, Alabama. These familys together with others left Georgia and they cross the Chattachoochee River near Eufaula, Alabama. They then went clear across the state and s ettled for a short time in Green County. They then turn back almost back tracking them self before settling in Coffee and Dale County. Mr. Shiver, I want to ask you if you were a part of these Shiver family, and if you could tell me which one of these were your forefathers. There is A Abner B. and his wife Mary Shiver. They live near the Rockyhead Community and are buried in the Mt. Olive Cemeterey near the Rockyhead Baptist Church. Then there wee an A.S. (Abe) and Sarah Snellgrove Shiver. They are buried in the Ariton Cemetery. This Abe (A.S.), Shiver was my wife uncle. The only thing we been able to get on this family was, that they had two daughters. Mattie we are told married Dr. Roy Hart Norris, and the other Lucretia married R.S. Woolfolk. We do not know if they were other children in this family, so I wonder in you know any thing that will help to clear this up. Now let me tell you my connection into this Shiver family. My wife Lena was the daughter of John THomas and Hellena Milstead Shiver. John T was the son of Samuel Augustus and Sarah Prestwood Shiver. Samuel A was the son of Jacob Jr. and Sarah Shiver. I am retired and sense my retirement this has become my hobby. I have just finished a book on my family history, and if I can get enuff material on thse family I would like to have a small book publish on these familys. End of letter. I have several more from same timeframe but thought this might be interesting to some of you.
I somehow... (still don't ask me how!) got those messages back today, after moving all the other 1029 messages out of the folder and leaving nothing there. Weird, huh? It showed that there were still 34 messages in the folder, even though there wasn't any subject lines showing. Then when I booted up this afternoon, they were just there! I appreciate those of you who sent me the messages a second time. You're wonderful! That's great! Got a big belly laugh frm that!
Sorry, guys. This is not a "Shiver thing." My dad, who grew up in Oklahoma, told a story about an old lady at a revival meeting - shouting "Amen" with the rest of the congregation as the preacher named and denounced current vices - until he said, "...and you women, with your snuff sticks...," at which the old woman grumbled, "Now he's quit preachin' and gone to meddlin'!" That sounds more like the Shivers I know!! Thanks, Lee
Your stor y brought back memories for me too..... of "Quilting Bee's" after church , in my Grandma Shiver's house and the older women spitting in rusty coffee cans. Once one of us kids knocked a can over, Boy did we run, we sure didn,t want to clean it up! Thanks for the memory Linda Ciparro

This is for Mary. As I was doing my annual cleanup around my desk, of things that I have saved, as far back as 1998, I found this address: Mr and Mrs William Seagrave 1743 Lauren Avenue Auburn, AL 36830-7653 seagraves@auburn.campus.mci/net This was the lady who mentioned about Shiver-Calhoun in SC. It was interesting as I saw somewhere here in the past few weeks, a Myrtle Shiver, born 1902. My dad's name is also Myrtle and I asked him if he had ever heard of this other one. He said that she was his uncle Loyd's brother Enoch's daughter and that she was red headed. He will be 85 6 Jan. He also said that everytime they started out to church at Cool Springs, that they would stop by Enoch's house and stay and stay and stay. Enoch was the one who was the toughest man in Mitchell County. One day a newcomer came into the area and insisted that he was tougher than Enoch, and provoked him into a fight. He was tough and was getting the best of Enoch, so Enoch ended up shooting him and killing him. He went down in NW Fla on the Ecofina Creek/River and worked for awhile until the incident blew over and he was allowed to come back to Camilla area. My grandad went with him and stayed with him in what was then a swampy area. There was a black family in Camilla area named Bigham. The man got into some trouble so uncle Loyd loaded his belongings on a freight train and sent him to SE Alabama. His descendants still live in the area today, and when uncle Loyd would come over to visit, then he would check on that family. Uncle Loyd was was of those snuff dippers that chewed up a peachtree twig, into a small brush, then would doodle it around in the snuff and then put it in his mouth and work on it. In his house, the living room had beds, so he would sit in front of the fire in a rocking chair, with his brogans near the fire, and when he finally spit that concoction, the fire would smoke and nearyl extinguish. That was in contradiction to myother kin that would take that Railroad snuff and put a pinch under the bottom lip. Black woman used to work for us and would take a dip, smile, and say, "Johnny, Johnny, when you dip Navy, you spit ham gravy!"
I sent an e-mail last Thursday stating that we know Elijah to be the son of Daniel. That was a goof. I meant that Elijah was the son of Abraham. Hey, it was Christmas Eve and I was VERY tired from two straight days of last-minute shopping! :-) Hope you all had a wonderful New Year's celebration and that the year continues to bring you joy! Since I kept hitting a brick wall looking for my Great Grandfather Lonnie Eugene other than what I have found at the Heath Wilkinson cemetery and the census, I looked for his brother, Robert Samuel Shiver. This is what I have found on him. This information comes from the census information found at NARA, from visiting the cemeteries, obits and from information from living relatives. I can send my census info if that would help. Does any one know anything about any of the Shiver members here?? Descendants of Robert Samuel Shiver Generation No. 1 1. Mary et al - I'm SO sorry about the bad links on my web site... The new page was edited very late at night one night when my eyes were blurry from too long on the computer... I forgot one of the subdirectories in the link, making them incorrect. I have corrected the problem on the "New" page, and one or two I found on another page. Do remember though that I don't have pages up yet for some of the links on the "2 Jacobs" page (i.e., their children, unless one already existed). So don't be discouraged if those links get you a "page not found" error. I'll get them up soon! :-) Thanks for your patience... Who needs Y2K? Just try incompetence! It messes people up just fine! ;-) Mary Kathryn -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@attglobal.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ South King Co. Gene. Lyrice, I have learned (from Dan Ward) that the Thomas J. Shiver, who is buried at McCullough, Alabama, was the son of Jacob Shiver III, and his second wife, Catherine May Cooper. Thomas married Mary Pleasant "Mollie" Malloy. Bill Cassady
Lyrice - Jimmy shared with me the information he received about Elijah being a son of Jacob, but the only Elijah we have record of his father at this point is Elijah, son of Daniel. I don't know how Ruth came to that conclusion, as I have never seen her work. Does she include sources? Elijah is specifically mentioned in Abraham's will, as are Daniel's children Louisa and Mentena (Leweezer and Mentney). From what he sent me, he had several other children as children of Elijah's, but I cannot prove any of them, as I have not seen any data on them (besides Jane (Bracewell) and Amanda (Lee)). Somewhere else (was it in your e-mail Jimmy?) I saw a maiden name of ONASON for Nancy, wife of Elijah, but I'm not certain where that came from either. And I guess I'm confused about who you are asking about. As far as I know, the Jacob you are talking about (son of Abraham, and brother to Daniel) was married to (1) Susan BURCH and (2) Mary DEES. No one has claimed a marriage to Elsy DUPREE. And the Jacob I have listed as the son of Jacob (son of J&H) is married to Sara Ann SWILLEY (though this is speculation; please see this web page on my site: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/Shiver_files/2jacobjr.html, as it lays out the case for the two Jacobs born in 1789). So, I guess I'm no help, as I have never heard of a Jacob married to a Nancy or an Elsy DUPREE (please don't interpret this to mean that I don't believe you however, I just don't have any information like that in my files). I will be putting more updates to the web site on the page, and if you'd like to check what I have so far, go to the main page, and click on "What's New?". I have a few other additions already there. I will be including the bulk of Abraham's children and more of the Jacob (son of J&H) line. When you get to the new pages, please realize that there may be some deadlinks there, as I inserted links for some of the children, but have not had time to complete their pages yet. None of the names on these pages are indexed as yet, as I have not had time. I hope to get to that this evening late or tomorrow. Hope you all have a safe and Happy New Millenium! I think you are right Lyrice, as I have a Thomas SHIVER, b. abt. 1862 in Worth Co. to James SHIVER (where did you get Annie's maiden name; do you have a marriage record? I'd LOVE to see that! <g>). James was the son of Alfred and Sarah of Lee County, Georgia. As of yet, I do not know who this Alfred's parents were. There is another Alfred, born in the same year (abt. 1816), with a wife Sarah who was the apparent son of John and Lyddia (as Lyddia was living with him in 1850 Dale Co., AL census), but I cannot seem to make a case for them being the same man... I intend to do a page for these two Alfreds that will appear on my web page as well. I have tried and tried to fit these two men together, but they just won't go quietly! :-) I don't have information on an Alfred Sr. either. The time frames won't fit for there being an Alfred Sr. as far as I can see, as the Alfred, son of John & Lyddia was born in 1816. Where did you receive information of an Alfred Sr.? I have not seen that before... (It appears that there is a LOT of stuff I haven't seen!) ;-) Let me know what you can about this and I'll see how else I can help... Shiver B: Nov 10, 1869 - D: March 5, 1947 (I assume that Mary was Thomas's wife) - the ones buried at McCullough Cemetery that Bill Cassady wrote about - Could Thomas be the son of James and Annie Stokes Shiver. James being the son of Alfred, Jr., son of Alfred, Sr., son of John and Lyddia???? What do ya'll think? Lyrice
Hi Gang - Hope you all had wonderful holidays!! I direct this especially to Mary Kathryn and Jimmy Davis but anyone who knows the answer, please fill me in!! >From what I gathered from Mary K: Elijah, son of Abraham and Daniel's brother, married a Nancy (maiden name unknown) and that they had at least two children: Jane who married Uriah Bracewell and Amanda who married Joshua Lee (which I think is Jimmy's line?). and Mary K says other two girls (on 1850 Dale Co, Al census) , Mentry and Lewyner(?) were Daniel's children. OK -- I've got that part. Where I am messed up is that I had this Jacob(son of Abrham and brother to Daniel) married to an Elsy Dupree - not a Nancy. I had the Jacob who married Nancy - well that Jacob was the son of Jacob (s/o J/H) and unknown wife. This data came from the notes of Ruth Shiver Manning. My question: Which Jacob married Elspy Dupree and Which Jacob married Nancy????? Can ya'll straighten me out????????? Lyrice

Were the Shiver(s) found in Sylvester GA kin to the Shiver(s) found in Turner County, GA. The reason that I ask is this: I know that people from around Sylvester GA did in deed move later on into Worth and Turner County GA. I know because my Father did!! He was b. 1905 Worth County, GA and then later on moved to Sylvester, GA and Norman Park. Then later returned again to Worth County. At this same time period, my Aunt Living in Worth County, married a man Shiver(s) from Turner County. See what I mean??
