    3. Never mind! I found this Joseph in my database right after I sent the message to the list. He was Joseph Alvin SHIVER, son of Oris Jacob SHIVER and Lessie BRADY. Oris was a son of Joseph SHIVER and Eva Lilla MOREE. Joseph was a son of John SHIVER and Mary SHIVER. Mystery solved! I'm writing Liana now... 2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. Anyone out there that can help this lady? This Joseph has to connect with our lines somewhere! :-) MKK ****************************************************************** >From the Desk of Liana Trombley Hi, Would you be familiar with the family of Joseph SHIVER, who had 2 sons and a newborn dtr when his wife, Hedwig (Hattie Kush) died of uremia poisoning in southeastern Michigan in 1949? The family story is that after Hattie died, Joseph Shiver left Michigan for GA or AL, where his sister raised the newborn dtr, who later became a nurse. Hattie Kush was Polish, being raised in Wyandotte, Wayne Co,Michigan. Joseph Shiver and Hattie lived in Royal Oak, north of Detroit, Wayne Co (Co is either Macomb or Oakland). Hattie is buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Oak Park, which is in one of the above counties (all north of Detroit). Hattie died in 1949. 1. [SHIVER-L] Obits, Deeds, Bible records, etc. for GenConnect Boards
    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. Hi everyone, Nancy Bruce sent me 6 different obits today for posting on my Dougherty County, Georgia GenConnect Boards (I prefer to have these as read-only boards with the exception of the Query board so that people don't post queries where they shouldn't be...). In corresponding with her she indicated that she had forgotten just how many obits she had and that maybe I should remind everyone to check their files! If you have any obits, deeds, bible records, military pensions, bios (from county histories, newspapers, etc.) or wills, please contact me and if you will transcribe them, I will post them on the boards for the benefit of all! 1. [SHIVER-L] Virus warning--Another REAL one...
    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. Hey all! Got this from Tim Stowell, another USGenWeb county coordinator in Georgia. I also received notification from another source which mentioned this link: http://www.wired.com/news/news/technology/story/20143.html Check this article for more information. And PLEASE, don't EVER download a file from someone you don't know! (Or even from someone you DO know unless you requested it and are expecting it.) Most of us request GEDCOMs, which are text files and are harmless, but if something is zipped and you don't know who it is from, DON'T open it until you confirm from that individual exactly what they've zipped into that file... > There is a new virus, "Worm.Explore", which is transmitted through an email > attachment and which is very dangerous. > > If you receive an email which has the attachment "zipped_files.exe" DO NOT > DOUBLE CLICK ON THIS FILE TO RUN IT. It will destroy vital files on your > hard drive and on the network. > > If you have already run this file, do not turn your computer off. Call > tech support at once for help. > > > A more detailed description is below. > > HOW WORM.EXPLORE WORKS > The worm -- first discovered in Israel -- enters as an email attachment > with the name "zipped_files.exe." 1. [SHIVER-L] A new REAL "worm" - PRETTYPARK.EXE
    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. Hey all, I'm a bit hesitant to send this out, because I realize how many phony virus alerts there are out there... This one appears to be real, and I have checked the URLs below myself. If you go to the Symantec Web Site (makers of Norton Anti-Virus software), you can find instructions on how to detect if you have this "worm" on your machine and how to eradicate it. I am only sending this to my lists because a while back when "Happy99.exe" was floating around, it actually got sent to me a few times... The best way to protect yourself against Internet viruses or worms is to NOT open any attached file with the extension ".exe" or Word Documents that might contain a malicious macro (unless you are expecting the file to come in and know exactly what it contains before opening it).. I realize I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but I felt it was important enough to warn you... Mary K. > There is a new Worm/Trojan Virus being spread called PrettyPark. 3. Jim Swailes copied this out of The Drawer in Albany, and he and I were wondering if anyone had any idea what this means for Susan? It appears she left Jacob for some reason (separation or divorce), but what happens to her after that? Did she die before the 1860 census? Remarry? Anyone know? 3. Anybody who can, please take a stab at this one. Land Grant to David Shiver, Commonwealth of Virginia dated 11 August 1786! David Shiver 1000 and Sixteen Patrick Henry Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, To all to whom these presents shall come, Greeting: Know ye, that by Virtue and in consideration of a presumption Treasury Warrant Number eight hundred and fourteen issued the twenty-sixth Day of April One thousand seven hundred and eighty there is granted by the said commonwealth unto David Shiver (Esq.?) of Jacob Myers who was assignee of James Carroll certain tract or parcel of Land, containing one thousand acres by Survey bearing date the Twentieth Day of August one Thousand seven hundred and eighty four Lying and being in the County of Lincoln on the Waters of Benson Creek and bounded as followeth (to wit) Beginning at two Hickories running thence North ten degrees West three hundred and fifty six poles to an Ash Dogwood & Hickory thence South eighty degrees West four hundred feet, nine and a half to two Sugar trees and a Hickory thence South ten degrees East three hundred and fifty six poles to two Sugar trees then North eighty degrees East west four hundred feet and a ??? to two sugar trees and a hickory then south ten degrees east three hundred and fifty poles to two sugar trees then north eighty degrees east four hundred forty nine and a half to the Beginning with the appurtenances, to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of Land, with its appurtenances, to the said David Shiver and his Heirs for ever. In witness whereof the said Patrick Henry Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, hath hereunto set his hand and consent the ???? Seal of the said commonwealth to be affixed at Richmond, on the Fourteenth Day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty six and of the Commonwealth the Eleventh. I am sure all those sugar trees are long gone but this is 30 years after our John WM Shiver is supposed to have landed in Philadelphia. Virginia is on the way to SC but I have no idea where Benson Creek is. I have been told the John also received land grants in Ohio and sold them sight unseen. Could this David have done the same with his land? Could he also be part of our puzzle? I assume this to be a Rev. War grant also. This one goes way beyond my experience and in fact I had him filed as a SHIVERS and not shiver. It wasn't until I started talking to Glydie Nelson that I pulled it back out to send her a copy of the original that I noticed the mistake. My copy date on this thing is 14 Dec 97 and I don't know why I never posted it before even if it was a Shivers given all the unknowns we have out there. I have this document scanned as JPG files for anyone else who thinks they want to try and tackle this sucker! I guess bottom line is .... HELP .... I am really stuck! Jim ps, Mary, you should recognize this because I think we discussed it when I first started this early stuff.

    1. Re: [SHIVER-L] Isaac Shiver born 1822 son of Abraham
    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. Tracie - I think there is some confusion with the two Isaacs and all the wives. I had wondered previously if that Margaret Dorinda wasn't the Margaret D. Cook, just with the wrong name, but it looks like you've gotten that straightened out now, since you found the marriage record. The Isaac you are talking about with the sons Bonaparte and Abram is (I believe -- someone else out there correct me if I'm wrong), the son of Abraham and Martha, Abraham being the son of John & Hannah. This Isaac must have had a first wife though, does anyone have him somewhere in the census in 1850? It looks like he had several children prior to marrying Margaret (and she was barely older than his children if that census transcription is correct!). He is definitely going to take some straightening out, isn't he? :-) But welcome to the SHIVERs, they ALL require that! :-) Mary K. -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@ibm.net http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy Dougherty Co., GA USGenWeb page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gadoughe Monroe Co., GA USGenWeb page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gamonroe South King Co. 1. [SHIVER-L] Isaac Shiver born 1822 son of Abraham
    2. Hi guys! Just got back from the Archives and found out that I have been researching the wrong Isaac. I thought that my ggrandmother's father was Isaac, son of Jacob because of a letter I found. I found at LDS that Jennie's mother was Margaret Dorinda Cross and her father was Isaac Shiver. Today at the Archives I found the marriage record for Margaret and Isaac who were married Feb 13, 1857. This would make Isaac (son of Jacob) 13 when he married . I then looked in the 1860 Hamilton County census and found Jacob and Mary Shiver with son Isaac and on the next page was : Isaac (38) Margaret D (17) Mary (16) Bonaparte (14) Phoebe (12) Martha (8) Susan (6) Abram (4) Eugenia 11/12 John Wilkes (?) 8 This would be Jennie's family!! Can anyone please help me with this Isaac!! Thanks! Tracie

    1. [SHIVER-L] A friendly warning about e-commerce...
    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. To all the members of my e-mail lists: As the list owner of the above-referenced lists, I just wanted to send out a friendly reminder (and warning) about some of the things that can occur when you are doing business on the Internet. Believe it or not there are people out there who will try and take you for a ride, and some of them even do genealogy! I have been receiving e-mail over the past few days from a woman named Annette Womack who was recently ripped off when buying a genealogical book entitled "Southern Historical Families" at auction at E-Bay. The author, Pamela Daniels, had put the book up for auction and evidently misrepresented it as a book about historical Southern families (most thought that meant families of well-known Southerners). In reality, it was just a book about her own ancestry, which was limited to AL and GA. And not even a very good book at that, as it contained no documentation! Here is a quote from one "dissatisfied" customer: > "I won the bid on the "book" at the tune of $31.00 plus postage. Lucky me, > huh. > It's not the money so much as the fact that she deliberately made her > description misleading by sounding as if she had information on "HISTORICAL > SOUTHERN FAMILIES." I feel that title is misleading because it sounds as if > she has included in this "book" families from all of the southern states that > were involved in historical events in history, such as war heroes. I have > many such heroes in my lineage. This would have been a goldmine if the book > was what I thought it would be. Including the surnames was a big draw for me, > I fell hook, line and sinker for that. > I think this is her own personal genealogy and she is trying to make a buck > on her research. > In the list of surnames in her ad, there are 12 of the surnames that I am > researching, but none of mine were in Georgia or Alabama. Had I known that > her idea of the south is only those 2 states, I would have passed on this > "book." > The lady that raised my awareness of this problem actually lost the bid but was contacted by the author and got the book for $25.00. So, I would specifically warn you about Pam Daniels of Leesburg, GA and generally warn you to know what it is you are getting before buying this type of thing online and in this fashion. Let the buyer beware!
