THis data is from -- The Watford Family, compiled by James Horace Coulliette, final revisions and historical text by Margaret Josephine Phillips, 1986. This is an update of 1,005 pages, indexed, of an earlier 500+ page book on this family. Covers descendants of Watfords of Va, NC, and Darlington Co, SC, but primarily of Joseph Watford, the Rev War vet who came to SE Ala and settled a large area on Big Creek, in today's Houston Co, south on Hwy 231 S, near the Fla line. Address of Phillips is: 4601 North Park Avenue #1115 Chevy Chase, MD 20185. THis is part 1 of several parts. from page 166, listed as 165 in index: Janie Shiver Dau of George Ellis Ball, son of Joseph Louis Ball, marr Margarette Watford, 4-28-1892 to Catherine Tiller, who was born 10-10-1869, died 10-16-1942. She was dau of William J Tiller and Jane -- They had 8 children and one of their dau was Janie, who was born 8-22-1897 and died 5-14-1900. She married a Shiver, first name not given. They either lived in SW GA, NW Fla or SE Ala. It looks like Ga. Next: Sara Shiver page 169 she marr Ira Dolphus Watford, looks like Jackson Co, Fla. Son of Dempsey Dolphus Watford and Rachel E Williams. Sara Elizabeth Shiver marr Ira on Nov 20, 1904. She was born 8-27-1884 and died 3-17-1970. She was dau of David Shiver and Nancy Hewitt. Children of Ira and Sara were: Euless Watford, Huley D Watford, Foy Dolphus Watford, Herman Addist Watford, Janie Merle (Hawks-Holland), Milton Paul Watford, Edith Grace (Baggett. Should anyone need them, book has the children's birthdates. Dempsey Watford, bro of Ira, married Zannie Merica Shiver, Aug 29, 1907, she born 3-2-1891 and died 7-3-1970. She was dau of Jeff Davis Shiver and Nancy Jane Hewitt (not an error!). Children all born in Jackson Co, FL: Nellie (Everitt) David Watford Ruby (Farmer) Edward Watford Eunice (Birge) Edna Merle (Sasser) Verna Louis (Wachob) Mary Elizabeth (Myrick) Dempsey Watford, Jr. Page 262: Martie Mae SHiver marr Barney Franklin Watford, son of Barabas Bernard Watford and Annie Mae Love. Martie Mae born 10-14-1911. Dau of Marvin SHiver and Eliza Smith. Children: George Washington Watford, born 12-23-1929. Appears to have been Dale Co, AL. More later. Do any of these help anyone?

One of my hobbies is to look in indexes of other family histories. This has proved very beneficial to me over the years. Recently I checked out a book at local library on the Watford Family, 1,000 pages. Starts with family in Darlington Co, SC and shows how and why people left that area and came to AL, FL, and GA. Shows old roads, etc. It appears that almost everyone in this area is descended from that family. The local was Joseph Watford, a Rev War vet who came to SE Alabama and settled on Big Creek, vic NW Fla line. In the index is a number of Shiver names, including this area as well as GA and one family from Tuscaloosa AL. This area in SE Ala was first Dale County, then Henry and at the start of this century, split off into Houston. During the next two or three days I will put on this site (with MaryK's permission), data on those Shivers. One that I remember was Gaston, who I believed lived in Graceville, FL area and Gaston, Jr. One that I recall was the marriage of America Shiver, dau of Jeff D Shiver. Hoping that this data will fill in some gaps for some of the Shiver researchers. Will try to start tonight.
To the List: Here is a transcription of the family pages from the bible of Abner B. Shiver -- The copy I am working from is not very clear...some sections missing...will do the best I can. Maggie, I think I'm gona have to push this one up to Shirley. I do have a couple of question though that might help us link up to the Abner listed on the death Cert. Do you know where she is Buried? Was she ever married to a "Jackson"? Shirley, Could this be the daughter of Jarrett L. and Elizabeth? If so, the Abner that is listed as her father could actually be her brother Abner or her Uncle Abner (our AB). The problem I have with this is that Jarrett lived another 40 years after her birth. Why would she leave home other than marriage? I don't have much at all on Abner son of Jarrett. Was he handy capped or injured in some way that he would need some one to live with him for assistance? Could she have been "staying" at his house to help out? If so, then her son may have just "thought" he was her father or place him as her father since that is who was raising her at the time of their marriage. I know it's not much, but that's about all I have from the Alabama line. One thing about these Shiver people. They sure seem to go out of their way to take care of family (or get rid of them :-)). You can't go by the census, they moved in and out of each others homes too much. One thing I noticed about the death info is that he could remember the father but not the mother. This seems strange to me and that's what leads me to believe he was a different relation. Did Abner, son of Jarrett ever marry? This would account for not know who her mother was. Maggie, now that you have the birth cert. you may want to take that date and contact the historical society and news papers of the area. This could turn up some interesting obit. information that would shed a little more light (information could have been provided by someone other than the son giving a different perspective). I don't see her listed anywhere in Abners' (Abner Bartlet) family bible and there just are not that many Abner Shiver's listed during this time frame for Alabama. The relationship is the key! Now that I have stuck my thoughts out on an limb.... anyone else out there got ideas to look for? Jim ps. How is that for just a "couple of questions" before I pass the buck :-) > > SHIVER-D Digest Volume 99 : Issue 58 > > Today's Topics: > #1 [SHIVER-L] Death Certificate: Sara [MRipke@aol.com] > > Subject: [SHIVER-L] Death Certificate: Sarah Jane Shiver Collins > Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 18:24:33 EDT > From: MRipke@aol.com > To: SHIVER-L@rootsweb.com > > Everyone, > > I have received the death certificate for my great grandmother - anyone have > any thoughts or comments on the person listed as her father. > > Certificate Issued - 1935 # 9681 > Alabama, County of Pike beat #14 > Troy, Alabama RFD 5 > Sarah J Collins, female, white, widowed, housewife > date of birth Aug 1851 - 84 years > place of birth - Dale Co, Ala > father - Abner Shiver > his place of birth - don't know > mother - don't know > her place of birth - don't know > Informant - William Collins Troy, Ala RFD # 5 > Date of Death - 4/17/1935 2pm > ______________________ > > ~The informant was her son William Collins b. 2/1876 d. 1936 > ~Her father's name Abner - I take to be Abner - the N is not clear > ~If the father is Abner any thoughts on who the mother might be > > Any thoughts, comments or suggestion will be appreciated. > Thanks, > Maggie > > >
Yea, John! Way to go! I think this is what this sites all about...those who have, or stumble onto, information, sharing it with the rest of us! I hadn't thought to do this, but I think it's a good idea...I have some bible records, etc that I will be posting (again, with Mary K's OK) Shirley Turner Shiver James Louis>Louis James>Marion>Abner Bartlet
Trying to locate any info on my great grandfather, "Jake Shivor/Shiver" Born October 10, 1875 possibly in the Tallahassee, Florida area. Left home at the age of 16 and settled in Mississippi. Married Liza Jane Sutton Albritton in Mississippi on January 27, 1906. Possibly had one brother - - not sure about sisters. Possibly changed the spelling of "Shivor/Shiver" as we cannot seem to locate others. Darn these tri-focals! They mess me up. Jarrette's Sarah was age 7 in 1860...her brother Elijah was age 9...sorry! Shirley
Maggie: I was just looking over the Sarah's in my files...Jarrette Lin Shiver had a dau, Sarah, age 9 in 1860... See 1860 Census, Dale Co page 546-A, line 24..... Shirley
Maggie: I have 4 Abner's in my data base: 1- son of Jarrette Lin and Elizabeth, b abt 1844. Jarrett Lin is brother of Abner Bartlet, b 1819. This is the only Abner in my files that might be the father, but, Sarah is NOT listed in his bible as one of his children. The other two are Abner Bartlet's - g-sons of the above Abner Bartlet. This is very interesting. The place is right for our branch of the Shiver Clan in AL. Would be interested in knowing what you find. Shirley Turner Shiver
Maggie - Well, well! Abner, eh? I'm going to have to bow out to Jim Swailes and Shirley Shiver on this one. They are both from the AL lines and know WAY more about Abner Bartlet Shiver than I do. Abner Bartlet Sr.(8 Feb 1815 in SC-7 Dec 1894 in Dale Co., AL) was the right age to be your Sarah J.'s father, but he has a daughter listed as Lottie Shiver, born 4 Nov 1851, who md. William John BUNDRICK. Of course, there is a 2-1/2 year lag between this child and the next one born in Jun 1854. Always possible that your Sarah J. could have squeezed in there, eh? Especially if the death cert. was filled out by her son. Death certificates are notorious for being inaccurate concerning details about birth dates, places (and even parent's names I'm afraid to say...). It's a tough guess as to whether William got that information from her or from hearsay. Another question: why would Sarah J. be living with that other family if she was Abner B's daughter in 1860? It appears that all of Abner's other children lived with him until their maturity. Odd situation... Sorry to be difficult, but it's late and I'm tired... :-) Good luck sorting them out! I need help finding the ancestors of Miles K Shiver - we believe that his parents were Jacob Shiver ( but which one) and Mary Swilley I!d like to hear your theories. Thanks Jill Shiver.
Hi Mary Kathryn and Liana, I have some news on the family of Joseph Alvin Shiver. I found that "newborn daughter" that Liana was referring to in her message dated 15 June 1999. This daughter lives here in Valdosta and this is what I have found out from her. Joseph Alvin Shiver is still living in Michigan. Joseph's first wife was Hedwig Marie Kush, born 6 July 1923 in Wyandotte, Wayne Co., Michigan. Hattie died 29 November 1949 in Ferndale, Oakland County, Mitchigan. She died 23 days after giving birth to her daughter and she never left the hospital after giving birth. Joseph and Hattie had the two sons - Wayne and Orris - and then this daughter whose name is Laura Lynn Shiver, born 2 Novembe 1949 in Ferndale, Oakland Co., Michigan. When Laura was six weeks old, she was sent to Georgia to be reared by her father's sister, Anna Evelyn Shiver, who married Marvin McCorkle. Now Evelyn and Marvin had no children of their own - they just had Laura. Laura told me that she had always gone by the name of McCorkle but that she had never been legally adopted. Laura married Martin Jay Miller and they have one child, Maura Anslie Miller. Back to Joseph. After Hattie died, he then Married a woman by the name of Mary Ann (maiden name unkown) with whom he had three children. These children were Bonnie Jean; Jo Ann; and Patrick. The children Joey; Mary Alice; and Margie were Mary Ann's children by her first marriage - Laura did not know their last names. Laura said she since she was raised in Georgia she had not kept in contact with the rest of the family and so could not give me dates of birth, etc. The dates for Hattie were off her death certificate which Laura got out and read out to me while we were talking. There is more data that could be gotten if Liana will call Joseph. Laura was very nice and I got the impression that it would be easy to talk with Joseph and Mary Ann. Ya'll let me know if you find out any more data!!!! Hope this helps - Lyrice
