Salmon, b. May 12, 1768, at Bridgeport, CT, was in early life a surveyor. While pursuing his vocation in Virginia he enlisted, 1791, in the US army under Gen. Arthur St. Clair, was in the campaign against the Miami Indians and wounded in battle of Nov. 4, 1791. In 1793 he re-enlisted and served under Gen. Anthny. Wayne, taking part in the battles of Fort Recovery and Falling Timbers. After leaving the army he was employed by Boone Company of Kentucky as surveyor. (The famous Daniel Boone.) Here be married a Miss Stanley who 4 yrs. later was killed in a massacre. Taking his 3 yr. old son he journeyed on horseback to Connecticut, being two months on the trail. Again established in his native state, he was elected several terms to the legislature and served as a Capt. in War of 1812. In 1817 he moved to Catherine, NY, thence to Columbia Twp. in 1836. Here he engaged in farming until his death, Jan. 18, 1853. Salmon married abt. 1797 to his second wife, Ohebe Burritt (b! . Nov. 6, 1776, d. Jan. 18, 1872) of Bridgeport, CT. She was a member of the Elihu Burritt family and a woman of great energy and force of character. They reared a notable family as follows: Steven (by his 1st wife), unmarried, enlisted in US navy and supposed to be killed at Tripoli. Burritt, was a physician, m. Miss Hinman of Catherine, NY, had two children (unnamed) Stanley, followed farming, married, no children Sally m. Jesse Hitchcock of Catherine, NY, five children Charles, a lawyer, was US Consul at Messina where he died; married Miranda Sherwood of Bridgeport, CT, 3 children George, a mechanic, d. unmarried at New Orleans James, a farmer in Sheshequin, Bradford Co., PA, m. Eliza M. Hill, 3 children Henry, a lawyer, m. 1st Hannah Robinson; 2nd Sarah Allen, 3rd Lorancia Allen, 1 son by 2nd wife Walter, a graduate of West Point, being a classmate and intimate friend of Gen. McDowell; was a lieutenant in the US army and killed Dec. 28, 1840 by the Seminoles at Martius Point, FL; unmarried Rollin, farmer in Illinois, m. and 3 children Phebe, m. Guy Hinman of Catherine, NY, 6 children Julius, a lawyer, m. Juliet Robinson of Wellsboro, Tioga Co., PA, 1 son
