He named one of his sons Jay also. Jay Sr's father Morgan Brandon Sherwood was also born in Newark, Do not know where Morgan's father Abel M Sherwood was born, Abel's father was Elijah Washington, b in New Fairfield, Ct and Elijah's father was also named Abel, he also was born in Ct. Does any of this look familiar. What was your grandfather's father's name? Hope this is helpful, I'm not sure if our Sherwood's have a connection with Ohio or not.
