    1. [SHERWOOD] Re: Dr. Medad P. Sherwood
    2. Hi Donna, It's scant information, but hopefully will be of some help: Medad was apparently a son of Jedediah "Dyer" Sherwood and Johannah PARSONS (dau. of Aaron Parsons), and lived in the area of Bennington, VT. Medad's siblings were: Clara, Lemuel, Samuel, Zalmon, Obadiah, Jonathan and Aaron. Medad seems to have been the youngest of the bunch. I have Jedediah as b. 1763, Stratfield, Fairfield Co, CT; d. 24 APR 1853, Fairfield, VT; and Johannah b. 1764, Bennington, VT; d. 22 MAY 1833, Fairfield, VT; buried North Fairfield, VT. Jedediah was a son of Samuel SHERWOOD (Quartermaster in the Revolutionary War), and Ruth SHERWOOD. Ruth was Samuel's first cousin once removed (i.e. she was the daughter of Samuel's cousin John). Can I trouble you to share whatever information you may have on Medad and his family? 1. [SHERWOOD] Adiel & Daniel Sherwood
    2. Dean Sanders
    3. Hello John and everyone, John, I think maybe the Daniel SHERWOOD you're looking for was a nephew of Adiel SHERWOOD. Since I don't know any of the paticulars of the Daniel SHERWOOD you're seeking, I'll simply say that I know for a fact that Adiel SHERWOOD of Washington County. NY, (son of Seth SHERWOOD & Sarah PITCHER) had a nephew named Daniel SHERWOOD who was born circa 1768. This Daniel was the son of Seth N. SHERWOOD--who was a brother of Adiel and a son of the above Seth & Sarah, born to them at Stratford, CN in 1743. I know all these facts because Seth N. SHERWOOD applied for a pension in order to receive benefits from Congress for his military service during the American Revolution. On 10 Oct.1832 the 89 year old Seth N. SHERWOOD and his 64 year old son Daniel (both residents of Woodstock, Ulster Co., NY) swore out affadavits concerning Seth's activities during the war. Seth says that he lived in Kingsbury, Washington Co., NY during the war. In the Spring of 1776 he volunteered in the NY State militia and served about 10 months around Ticonderoga and Whitehall in a company commanded by Capt. O'HARA and Lt. SHERWOOD [the lieutenant is his brother Adiel] in a regiment commanded by Col. WYNKOOP. In the Spring of 1777 he volunteered again and as a minuteman served at various times and places until October of 1780. In October of 1780 he was taken prisoner at Fort Anne by a party of 700-800 British soldiers, tories and Indians. He was conveyed to Montreal where he was imprisoned for 25 months--the greater part of which he says was in "solitary confinement." Daniel adds a few more details. He says in 1776 (when he was about 8 years old) he saw his father volunteer for the NY Militia--"I saw him leave home." Later, he and his mother went to Ticonderoga where the regiment was quartered "to wash the soldiers clothes and also to sell various articles to the said regiment." Says his father was a Seargent. Says his father served in the militia from 1777 until the Fall of 1780 "along the frontiers near Lake Champlain"...."to protect the inhabitants from incursions of the Tories and Indians from Canada" until taken prisoner. Seth N. SHERWOOD died 4 June 1836. In 1838 his 74 year old widow Ann of Cayuga County, NY applied for widow's benefits. She says she married Seth 15 Nov.1783 in Kingsbury, NY and that her maiden name was TRUMAN (the date of marriage shows her not to have been the mother of Daniel, whose mom must have died sometime between 1776 and 1783). In order to support her claim for benefits, her son Stephen T. SHERWOOD of Cayuga Co., NY filed an affadvit as to his father's service: "has always understood from his father, and has often been told by him during his lifetime that he was taken prisoner in the Revolution". Also, in 1838 Truman D. PITCHER, a 78 year old resident of Castleton, Orleans Co., NY swore out an affadavit about Seth--whom he says was his neighbor in Kingsbury during the war and also his 1st cousin (his father being a brother of Seth's mom). Truman says that he knew Seth and his wife well. In a slightly bizarre revelation, Truman says that Seth SHERWOOD and his brother Capt. Adiel SHERWOOD were taken prisoner together at Fort Anne and that the troops who took them prisoner (and held them for 25 months) were under the command of a Capt. Thomas SHERWOOD--their brother. Truman's words: "the British forces which captured them was under a Capt. Thomas SHERWOOD who together with the said Adiel SHERWOOD and Seth N. SHERWOOD were brothers". Also, a half century after the fact, Truman relates an event which conjurs up an almost archetypal element: "I well recollect the return of Seth N. SHERWOOD to the said town of Kingsbury from captivity in Canada; as I then saw him, the said Seth N. SHERWOOD, with his knapsack on his back and held a coversation with him." Maybe this Daniel-son-of-Seth is the Daniel you're looking for? Also, I need to note that that ther was another Seth SHERWOOD who applied for a Revolutionary War pension. He applied in 1832 at Washington Co., NY; he was 71. This Seth served during the war from New Fairfield , CN and did not arrive in Washington Co., NY until after the war. I don't know how he fits into the SHERWOOD tree, but he is not the Seth who was the son of Seth SHERWOOD & Sarah PITCHER. Dean Sanders deanws@webtv.net

Significantly, he was listed two from Adiel Sherwood, and is probably connected with him. Adiel was b. Washington CT 25 Dec. 1749 to Seth and Sarah (Pitcher) Sherwood. Adiel was undoubtedly residing in that part of Argyle in 1790 that is today the Village of Fort Edward. He d. Kingsbury, Washington Co., 4 Dec. 1824. I have a list of Adiel's children, but no Daniel. He may well be a son of Adiel, but I find no proof for it. Thanks. John A.
